I just want to let you know I purchased the Neewer lens because of your thorough review. I want to say a BIG THANK YOUUU! Its my favorite lens and I use it for almost every project its def worth the price by far. So a Huge thank you! Your review saved me a ton of money
I've just started to get into photography and got an a6000 and your videos are very helpful thank you so much!
I appreciate your content man! Your videos are always relaxing to watch.
You are getting distortion on the Neewer because it doesn't have the electronic connection and therefor the camera isn't automatically fixing it with software. The Sony 35 has distortion too... it just gets fixed by the in-camera software because it's got the electronic connection. Hope that makes sense. Good comparison. Alll things being equal, the Neewer looks like a decent lens for the price. Just has to be manually focused and the images have to be fixed in post to remove distortion.
You are correct, great comment!
Bryan Adams how do I update the software for this distortion.
Unfortunately there is no 'in camera' lens correction for this specific lens because it is full manual and has no electrical connections. You can remove distortion in post processing software such as Lightroom. Hope this helps.
Bryan Adams I agree. I think for photo is better the neewer, you can correct distortion easily and WB and temp. But sharp is something you cannot "add" in post. So that's a more desirable quality in a lens. Bokeh does not like me in that lens. That's why legacy are so good, some are pretty sharp and with character and awesome bokeh
You can also correct the distortion in a video with adobe premiere
I'm thinking the color difference is due to the camera processing the image based on the Sony lens having a built in lens profile.
I believe you are correct. Thanks for the comment!
Very interesting observation. However I am not totally convinced. From my Canon lenses, I do know that the chemistry of glass such as extend of fluorine or other minerals (As used more aggressively and precisely in L lenses) make a significant change to the above factor. Can you turn off all the in camera processing / Use RAW format and then give a comparison between the "Contrast" and "Saturation" of image result from each lens without any PP? Could be interesting to know more on this issue that is a major difference between the two, IMO.
The Neewer is a great lens in low light, I use it all the time in dark spaces.
sure, but focusing must be a challenge in the dark.
Is it any good for say streaming in a set up
Well reviewed, I like how you show the comparisons, and then repeat them again so I don't have to pause the video and go back. I also like how you keep the review short and to the point. Super.
Awesome, thank you for the feedback!
I use the "Lens Compensation" camera app from Sony for fixing distortion on my manual/vintage lenses. Once you made a profile, you can shoot distortion free jpgs and even raw with every lens.
Akirakun Photography Nice tip. Thanks!
Hey Akirakun, are you talking about the PlayMemories Camera App with the Lens Compensation feature?
If so does it work on the A6000? If so, could you share your parameters?
Would be much appreciated :)
Cheers
Simon
I found out the Neewer lenses the other day on Amazon and of course you have a review on it! One thing I want to add is that sometimes when I shoot recipes videos I just keep my camera on manual focus because I almost always wants to focus on the food instead of my hands and auto focus simply wonât work. I think Neewer could be an option for people who shoot manual focus all the time as well if you donât mind the distortion and color, which can be fixed in post.
Thanks for doing this comparison. Love your channel.
Wow this is the best channel ever! Trying to step up my video quality with an a6000 and hero 5!
Thanks for the review/comparison!
I like all of your videos and reviews. I do have a question: are you using the Standard color profile or something else, and are you making any adjustments to those profiles? Thanks.
this was really informative, but can you please make a video with the neewer f1.7 35mm with video in bright and low light situations while telling us the iso you have it on and what shutter angle/shutter speed?
I took the leap and bought the Neewer budget lens. Surprisingly it is so easy to manually focus the objects with the focus peaking feature on my a6000. I am very pleased with the initial result pending more extensive usage. Thank you for your great review!
Is there activated an incamera distortion reduction for the Sony lens?
Could be the more soft image of the Sony an effect of applying distortion compensation?
Thanks! :)
Newbie here, but really wanted to be into photography. thank you for the information. really helped a lot. just ordered it today. 2018 for 89 dollars.
I have both and definitely keeping both. The reason for keeping Neewer is for the sharpness and in fact I plan to do a panoramic stitch with it over the sony lens.
Barrel distortion is easy to fix in post. Thanks for another good video.
I have the Fujian 35mm 1.7 on my Sony a6000. Could you please compare this lens with it in a video? I'm thinking about getting the Neewer because I can't afford the SEL 35mm 1.8. Thanks.
Please do a review of the viltrox fe 35mm f2 sony emount full frame that can be used on the sony a6000 etc. too :)
For stills I believe the Neewer lens is the choice if I'm to buy one. It is sharper and much cheaper, besides, both color profile and barrel distortion are nothing to worry about especially if you shoot RAW. The a6500 has an IBIS and with focus peaking technology mounting a manual lens is fun to go....thanks for the review!
VERY CLEAR COMPARISON. THANKS.
Your product reviews are great!
Do you live in Japan too?
I would like to ask a question regarding this lens, is it compatible with fullframe, a7, a7ii and a7iii cameras?
Thank you very much and have a great day.
great details, subscribed
Is there an app that can help resolve barrel distortion and etc just like desktop software would?
Could you do a comparison between the 7Artisans 25 1.8 and the Rokinon 21mm F1.4. I know the Rok is like 4 times as expensive, and should be better ,but it'd be interesting to know, by how much.
I have the old Sony Nex 5R. What's the best picture color mode? I usually shot at standard/landscape with added sharpness and contrast . It gives natural look but I wanna know what others are using.
hmmm ive got a choice of buying the sony lens or buying the sony a6000 and the nee
wer for the same price
is that the best 35mm manual lens I can get for 70$?
maybe buying a vintage lens with an adapter will be a better option?
The Neewer is a great travel lens. Due to its low cost I don't feel uncomfortable bringing it with me in any situation, unlike some of my more 'premium' lenses.
And, as always, the best lens is the one you got with you all the time.
Would it be any good for streaming in a set up
Hey, can you do a video on the Neewer 25mm f0.95?
Great video! Pls make a review on Zonlai 24mm lens e mount plss!
Can you please do an A6500 IBIS-only vs OSS-only video?
Since I assume you can't turn off/on IBIS or OSS independently from each other in the a6500...then this will kinda test will work:
A6500 w/ Newer 35mm (ie: IBIS only)
Vs
A6300 w/ Sony 35mm 1.8 (ie: OSS only)
iv heard it looks better if u shoot with more MM for portrait for better proportion what do u think , would it also work with the 35mm ? do u have any comparison ?
Question from absolute noob.
Is Neewer 35mm1.7 a good enough lense for street and landscape photography (and ocasionaly portrait) or i better go with the Sony 35mm1.8 one? (the price difference is to big) Thanks.
ps.sorry for my bad English :)
Seems like they do the exact same thing, but Sony has autofocus and an on-board lens profile which just makes it easier to use.
Wait, can I use these lenses on my Sony a1500?
Excellent video bro .. too good
I appreciate it.Thanks a lot.
have u tried the sigma 30mm 1.4 dc dn?
Any sugesstion between sony 35mm 1.8 or 7artisant 35mm 1.2 for potrait,landscape,street,daily.. i want the sharpest and the colours more natural ( real colours ). Please reply and give me the answer..
Do these Sony cameras correct distortion like the Fujifilm gamer as do? On Fuji cameras the camera know which lens is attached and it applies a correction profile (or whatever itâs called) to the image.
How does the Neewer compare to the kit lens? Is it worth buying the Neewer as a prime or will I get similar results with the kit (apart from the F1.7 option)?
same question :( have you found the answer yet?
DeanoRav I think itâs pretty much the same thing. Just that with the 1.7 lens will give you a nicer bokeh.
I got the Neewer for 40 box at Amazon, no regrets, using it with my 16-50 and just thinking of getting the Sony 50mm to use for video

but for photos color distortion for the Neewer 35 f1.7 you can adjust that with some software, so it wouldn't matter that much i think
You are correct, sharpness of the Neewer is the impressive part.
Can you compare both lenses in the dark conditions?
How does the neewar compare to the Sony kit lens
Which camera you have used for this comparison Video?
Did you show photos from RAW or JPEG?
In-camera barrel fix is applied only to in-camera JPEG and to preview of RAW, but RAW files themselves are left 'uncorrected'.
Can't you use Focus Peaking to manually focus on the cars even while the video is running?
In theory, but its hard enough to focus on a non-moving object for a picture, focusing in video is harder.
so what tone of color for AWB you use
Neewer lens seems to be a not so good choice for video but quite okay for still image. Not necessarily a bad lens.
It is a good lens for photos - especially for the price.
Yep. The not so good for video is mainly due to the lack of image stabilizer. Not because of the image quality. Image quality is pretty much okay. The barrel distortion is visible but still tolerable.
Because it dosent have autofocus? I have been shooting on a helios its quite easy just need to practice mote
will this lense be suitable for sony a7 full frame?
You should review the Fotasy N35 35mm F1.7, it's cool and inexpensive.
How do you avoid barrel distortion
Thank you for the video!! Can you add an adapter to the neewer to make it auto focus?
No.
Thanks guy!
Sony SEL35F18 vs 7artisans 35mm F1.2 comparsion pls pls.
Cool, I noticed the cars had Okinawa license plates. Were you there on vacation?
I have sony nex 5t
Any suggest for 50 mm lens for boked with affordable price?
ArdiNugroho go with canon fd 50mm
Neewer also name as Mieke I guess, I love my Mikie 50f2 even also lite confuse about the colors
Okay wow.. I'm shocked at how good the Neewer portraits looked and I can't believe at f/4 some of the images were sharper than the Sony.
y is der a blue tint in all the shots of neewer?
Ty
Hello guys, the Sony a5000 is an E mount camera as well, do you think the newer 35mm will work properly with that model?
Yes, it will.
Isn't the distortion and different colours due to the profile used by the camera, when it's got a electronic lens? In my experience the colours can be shifted quite a lot in camera, if you want to. So you could get colours like the Sony from the Neewer, if you take your time at set it up the first time, you use it. I can do that on my a5000, so I'm pretty sure, you can do it in the a6000 too :o)
Also, I know a lot of pros prefer manual focus to AF for video and the stepless aperture is really sought after for video.
Yes, you are correct. And yes, the declicked aperture is nice for video. I suppose the plus side of the SEL35 is setting it up on a tripod and being free to move anywhere without worrying about focus.
HappyDragon, how to set up colour profile in a5000 ? do you have tutorial link or video ?
hi sir nice video ...you didn't mention how fast neewer lense focus
its a complete manual lense! it depends on how fast u focus it manually
There's no question that the Sony lens is, overall, superior to the Neewer lens, but what do you want for $70.00? I have an old 70s-era Canon FD series 35mm f2.8 lens that I got off of eBay for about $80CDN and I love the rich colours and sharpness it delivers. Having to focus manually also brings in a tactile element that is missing from cameras that do all the focussing for you.
One trick I like to use when working with my Canon FD lens is to estimate the distance; if the subject is more than 20 feet away, I just set the lens to infinity. This allows me to nail the focus on the subject of interest and walk around capturing other subjects that are greater than 20 feet away without ever having to refocus the lens. No more waiting for the focus to lock on.
If it turns out that the subject is a little less than 20 feet away, I only need to rotate the lens barrel slightly rightwards and away from the infinity mark, and usually the object will come into sharp focus.
I think manual-focus lenses are probably a bit sharper because of their mechanical and optical simplicity, plus the fact that autofocus systems, as good as they are, are frequently off by a hair or two when they do lock focus, and that is likely due to some of the limitations inherent in AF technology.
Is this or the 32mm F1. 6 better?
Will it fit in alpha3500 ?
THX :)
Hey, you're in Oki? I used to live there.
I saw that and was hold up those buildings look awfully familiar, thats Okinawa. Lived there for six years and I miss it.
Is it possible to remove barrel distortion on the sigma in post editing
Absolutely. Which sigma though....? :)
I really enjoy the style of your videos. Informative, great quality, comfortable pace and style. Not like other videos being too technical, or just self promoting like a certain Hongkong based channel. Love it! Keep it up... subscribed!
Thank you for the compliment! Ahh DigitalRev.... haha :)
Agree. He doesnât talk loud or try to be cool. Reminds me of my eye doctor when Iâm getting my vision checked. Very soothing and not pushy.
great comparison :) quite surprising how well the neewer was holding up to the sony
Thank you! Indeed, I was not expecting that at all.
That Neewer is pretty darn good. nothing you cant fix in lightroom/darktable ^w^
hello which extra batteries brand did you buy for your a 6000 ?
check out the link in the description! :)
***** i have just saw it sorry , did these batteries work fine for you ?
Incredible!
How hard would it be to address distortion/colors afterward? Sorry, I'm new to this.
No worries. It isnt difficult at all. If you use Adobe Lightroom, a few clicks and you can make the Neewer image look the same or even better than the Sony image. You can easily remove barrel distortion and crank up the contrast.
Thanks
Are you in Okinawa, Japan?
Is the a6000 still a good buy? I'm thinking of getting an a6000 and buying a better lens or going for the a6300 and sticking with the kit lens. What would you say is the best lens for everyday shooting like street photography and small family events for either the a6000 or 6300
if you're doing more photography save yourself some money and get the a6000. You're getting identical results compared to the a6300 when it comes to photos.
Unless you are buying it primarily for its video properties, stick with the A6000 and use the extra money to put into a better lens. You can always upgrade the body later, when the price goes down.
are you going to get the a6500?! btw i subscribed to you say hello to your new subscriber *subbed*
Hello! Thank you for the sub! Ummmm.... yes I want to buy the a6500... im debating whether the price is too much though.....!
I like my neewer 35mm. cheap, small and sharp. Distortion can be fixed easily in lr.
horstfleischmann10 Did you fix it manually or is there any other profile that work with the lens. Or maybe the lense has its own profile?
The lens itself does not have itÂŽs own profile and i donÂŽt no if another profile fits. i just made a preset
horstfleischmann10 Nice!
can u send me the preset please? ill be glad!
Have you thought about reviewing the Fotasy 35mm F1.7? It's even cheaper at 28$
I've thought about it, but from the sample images ive seen, its more of a "toy lens" than a true lens you would use for portraits or street photography. I might try it though.
Thanks for the video. BTW, Are you in Okinawa?
In this video, I was. Now in texas.
TechnologyMafia Too bad. Being on Osaka, I am filming there for a friend's resort there soon....
Are you better off with the neewer than the kit lens? Thanks!
For portraits, yes. The kit lens does not produce nice bokeh.
No idea you were based out of Japan! Looks like Kyushu! My girlfriend is from Fukuoka and I spent about 3 years there... now crafting in Canada and maybe soon back to Nippon! Cheers
Awesome! Yea, I am only here for another 2 months or so. Contract is ending soon.
Neewer? Is it the same as meike?
My impression is that the white balance changes when you use the Neewer, but why?
Maybe, but I'm not so sure. AWB was set on the camera with both lenses. I think sony lenses just have their own color pop.
Do 'SEL35F18 vs Meike 35mm F1.7' please
It's the exact same lens.
I subscribed to your channel, very informative and relaxed. Are you Russian by a chance? You remind me of my childhood friend Vova, look just like him. Keep up the good work!
If the Neewer lens doesn't have an electronic connection as @Bryan Adams so well explained, wouldn't there be a concern of it damaging the Sony body?
Is there a good cheap wideangle somewhere?
onraj9mm How cheap? Check out the Rokinon 12mm and the Sigma 16mm.
you live in Brampton. Richmond st
Surprising how sharp the Neewer is stopped down a bit!
I wonder what the results would have been at f5.6, as the Sony should offer the sharpest results at f5.6 according to dxomark.
I think the Sony, like many Sony E-mount lenses, is still too expensive for what it offers. For example if you compare the Sony and Canon 10-18mm, or the Sony 55-210mm and Canon 55-250mm STM. The Canon options are both way cheaper and sharper.
I just switched from a Canon T5i to a Sony a6000 (maybe later a6500) because of size and weight. Portability is worth a lot to me, but it sure hurt to buy Sony E-mount lenses to replace all my EF(S)-mount ones.
I agree with you on all the above. I'm a Nikon shooter and consider the most useable Sony lens are way too expensive. Is this some punishment by Sony for me having already invested in Nikon lenses.
Agree with you. I wish the Sony 10-18 was $350, the Sony 50mm was $125, and Sony had a crop sensor 16-35mm F2.8. Sony lenses are 2x the price of Canon equivalents in many cases.
Since Sony bodies are relatively/comparatively cheaper Sony needs to recover/makeup by charging more for their auto focus lenses.
I get around it by buying Canon/Sigma EF/EF-S mount lenses and using adapters, this combo works quite well and also keep the costs down.
Except the auto-focus can be an issue.
I'm enjoying shooting manual using my collection of nikon lens. Sony lens are somewhat too expensive in comparison to Nikon and Canon lens. I'm seeing third party lens manufacturers capitalizing and filling in on Sony's lack of affordable lens. I'd love to have a few Sony primes and telephotos but have to look elsewhere to fulfill that need.
Her eyes!! :)
Neewer must be popular, it's taking me 6 weeks to get it from Hong Kong.
oh god you're in japan?!?!?! im coming!!
i thought we were supposed to never use AF in video because of the uncontrollable focus hunting ?
Definitely the the Sony lens is overall superior to the neewer no dough there, great video mate thank you for the review.
