    I think that people underestimate how important Rex’s bass was to that overall sound. Yeah his articulation got buried in the mix sometimes, but it was still part of the thickness.

    • @joshua.merrill

      They all fed of each other. They were basically a super group from the getgo. Dime and Vinnie with the groove, Dime and Rex with the tone, and Phil with the testosterone and heavy lyrics.

    • @Tasmanaut
      @Tasmanaut Před 2 lety +9

    • @justgivenofox9543
      @justgivenofox9543 Před 2 lety +4

      Rex and Dime were a unit. It’s so great to see Dime walk up to Rex on stage and hype him up and then they break out and start jamming. Fucking awesome. Talk about chemistry, not all bands have a happy ending but this band had an immaculate lineup not because of their talent but because of how they all worked with each other

    • @gregwhite9352

    I think what's missing is that hump centered at 600-800 Hz that gives Dime's tone its signature crunch. But overall, turns out that the bad rap on these wasn't really justified, cus that's a pretty nice foundation to work with!
    As far as the Precision Drive, I find that it makes things sound a _liiittle bit_ too spanky, even for Dime's standards - and the L500XL and Dimebucker are already quite spanky to begin with. They have this very prominent peak at around 2.1 or 2.2 kHz, which does come across quite a bit in distorted tones... so that might actually be the "spike" you're referring to.

    • @fircej
      @fircej Před 2 lety +2

      these newer modern drive pedals are more for lower tunings, definitely not on a Dime tone. I have an Airis Effects savage drive and I can agree it is a bit too spanky for Dime standards

    • @stevenhirsekorn3444
      @stevenhirsekorn3444 Před 2 lety

      That spikyness is mainly prevalent with the precision drive, it removes too much of the oomph from the guitar and the bright control Is definitely too high and the gain is a little low from the drive. The thinner jangly overdrive settings definitely are nasty but not in the way you want I think

    I had one of these a few years ago, cool amps. I had mine paired with a randall 4x12 but I can't remember what speakers I had in it. Had to sell it years ago due to financial issues but I enjoyed it alot.

    The Dime pickup just went serious bright. I hear the spike in my room. I wouldn't last 20 minute with it. You gotta change the speakers out. Its the speaker.

      @@PapaWheelie1 Did you swap out the speakers? If so what speakers did you choose?
      I have an original 5150 Cab and the Block letter head. Eventually i am going to change out the SHITFEILDs in it. Maybe a pair of the EVH and a pair of Hempbacks. Not sure yet.
      That thing is SO loud even though my Torpedo reload.
      And since remote work, I can't even move it to another room and mic it up.

    I am a proud owner of one of these but in black. One of the coolest feature it has is that you can play both channels simultaneously.

      Dime was moving away from this solid state stuff. His Kranks sounded WAY better IMO.

      Honesty, even before N.G killed Darrell I remember thinking Dime was going to die soon due to his alcohol abuse. I remember before his death kind of losing a bit of respect for him as a human being due to his alcohol addiction, I kind of got to the point where I honestly wanted to see the guy clean up his act! Even if he wasn't murdered I highly doubt he'd still be alive today...I know a lot of his fans liked the drunk Darrell, but myself as a fan started to think the alcohol was getting the best of him.

      @@LeadMe2TheBliss funny enough i've heard about Dime having written letters about him wanting to get sober. It's very possible he would've went to get clean. He even had plans to try and reunite Pantera again before that tragic evening in Ohio.

    It may not sound exactly like Dimebags tone, however as a amp of its own it gives a great metal tone in its own right to be honest. A lot more midrange and can give a great modern metal tones. This is a killer amp and someone can come up with thier own signature tone with it.

    If I recall correctly, in an interview back in the day Dime boosted the hell out of the signal going into the amp, with the preamp gain set a bit low to tame that woofy sound.

      Back when I had my rg I ran a distortion pedal through the clean channel with the gain at something like 0.1.

      There was an in depth interview in a magazine that iirc was called Thrash Guitarist where Dime discussed how he got his Vulgar Display tone and in particular his tone on F***ing Hostile.
      The description went something along the lines of that Dime grabbed a handful of distortion pedals, plugged them all in in series, he couldn't remember them all but there was a big pig in there and a fuzz face and he said "I had to keep hold of the guitar in case the feedback ripped it out of my hands" 😆 🤣 .
      Can you get any more Dime?
      Phil: "What distortion pedal shall we use for this really angry song?"
      Dime: "Yes!"
