    The Windows Magnifier was a god send for me when i discovered it. I used to use Zoomtext as well, I even had Zoometext for DOS back in the day lol. I like the fact that the Windows Magnifier works with PC games. I play Everquest and us the magnifier with it quite successfully. Great video and yes, I'd be lost without my CCTV!

    Glad to know the PC Windows has caught up and we no longer need to use ZoomText..it was a hog on my computer and made software crash. I switched to Mac because of the built in disability features, text to speech built in and zooming with a track pad is a bit smoother then the windows thing. Glad to see though that windows is trying to catch up. Thank you Sam! Question: When you where the Jordi (sp?) glasses on your head and you are out and about away from your computer, where does it project the view? Can you use it to read? I am a law student and always looking for ways to read on the go. I have a portable CCTV from APH called Visiobook which is pretty cool, sets up like a laptop to not very conspicuous in public but does not fair well with big law text books. I have tried the handheld cctv things but they are very difficult to track the line in big text books.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  Před 10 lety

      When you wear the Jordi glasses, the image is displayed on screens right in front of your eyes. They kind of remind me of the night vision goggles the military use. You could use them to read but I think it would be difficult to hold your head still enough. You know when you look through binoculars at something in the distance, every little shake in your hand is compounded! That's how it would be.

    Great channel, Sam! Nice to see a fellow visually impaired CZcamsr out there doing videos. :) You're way ahead me, though, I only just started seriously doing videos a month ago. Before I only ever uploaded clips from concerts I went to on why other channel. :p I hear you about Zoomtext. I defected from Windows back in 2009 & went to an iMac because Mac has always put accessibility at the forefront of all their products. They may be more pricy, but they last a lot longer. i am still on my 2009 iMac over six years later! When I was on Windows machines, I'd have to replace them every five years because they ran so slow, even after formatting & doing a fresh install! One thing I hated about the Windows 7 magnifier when I tried it at a friend's place was that the magnifying glass icon followed the mouse pointer & it was super annoying. I already KNOW I'm using magnification, I don't need n icon to remind me! It only just got in the way! I didn't notice that on your Windows 8 machine... Did they get rid of it? I'm also curious if you've upgraded to Windows 10 since this video, and if so, how do you find the magnifier in it? Re: visual-techs (CCTV's), I used one from time to time at my previous job for many years but outside of work, I just usually use my magnifying glass. I saw a bunch of really cool CCTVs at a tech fair a few weeks ago, though, so I am tempted to break down & get one. They've come a long way over the years!

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  Před 8 lety +1

      +Circle of the Blind Mice so happy to see you on here! I love that there's another low-vision tech oriented channel on CZcams now! I actually watched your android versus iOS part one video this morning, the one you linked in the discussion on Facebook. Haven't watched part two yet but I completely agree with everything you said in one! I recently started working as an assistive technology expert at the bluegrass Council of the blind here in Kentucky, it's an affiliate of the American Council of the blind. I've always been an android guy but am starting to learn more about the Apple products so I can be more effective in demonstrating their features to clients. Because of that my attitudes are changing towards the Apple products! But I'm getting off-topic, LOL! I am currently on Windows 10 and find that the screen magnification feature hasn't changed much since Windows 8 and 8.1. As far as the floating magnifier, while you're viewing the magnifier control panel, if you click outside of it the floating magnifier appears and stays with you everywhere you go but if you minimize the control panel it sends everything down to the taskbar and there's no floating magnifier. I agree with you that floating icon gets pretty annoying! I've been using Zoom text lately for the first time since windows XP and I'm starting to get used to it again. It's on my work computer and I'm trying to re-familiarize myself with it so I can demo it to prospective clients. Not sure if you used it lately but they partnered up with another company that specialized in screen readers so the voice aspect of Zoom text has come a long way. It's actually quite useful although there are some bugs in Windows 10 apparently, especially Outlook. Anyway I'd love to chat with you again sometime about all the cool gadgets we have available to us now! BTW I've Artie subscribe to your channel! Oh, before I forget, as far as CCTV's, you should see if there's an organization near you that will loan one for you to use, the group I'm working with now does that, we have about 15 or 20 CCTV's that have been donated over the years and we loan them out to people who need them. Bear in mind that they're not the latest and greatest models but they still get the job done and their free! Something to think about!Sam

    • @Circleoftheblindmice
      @Circleoftheblindmice Před 8 lety

      +The Blind Spot Hey Sam! Thanks for the warm welcome! :) BTW, I've added your channel for my own channel's list featured channels! :) I've found some huge low vision channels later, but I'm sticking to the low vision tech channels on my featured channel list. :) OMG, that was way too many channel words in a two sentence space, LOL! Thanks for the info about the Windows magnifier. I've debated picking up a cheap laptop, just so I don't forget windows completely! I used it for close to 25 years but after getting laid off last year, I've just been exclusively on my iMac, so I'm starting to forget all the Zoomtext commands I knew like the back of my hand! We should definitely chat about tech! I found out I can get a CCTV for 25% of the price through the CNIB, but I need to get into my optometrist to get an updated eye report. Don't get me started on THAT! My eyes were crappy, are crpapy & always will be crappy! Yet I have to submit a new eye report...*sigh* Oh well, for 25% of the price, it'll be worth it, if I ever decide which one to get, LOL! That's great you got a job at your local blind organization. Sadly, a certain blind organization where I live has switched out a lot of visually impaired staff for fully sighted ones. NOT cool. :/

      I actually don’t recommend that method because it only in large is things locally, not globally. For example, if you do it while in a webpage, it will make everything on the webpage larger and easier to see. However, when you leave that webpage or leave the browser entirely, everything is still small. So it only enlarged what was on that webpage and not anything else on your computer.

    Do you have a recommendation for a surveillance camera that has to be hooked up through a computer? I work in a high school and constantly have fundraising money stolen. Thanks and look forward to hearing back from you!

      @theblindlife  Před 7 lety

      I'm sorry to hear about that. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for you though, don't know much about security systems. This video is about an assistive technology device called a CCTV. Many people get confused thinking it's referring to a video camera security system but it's not, it's a device that visually impaired people like myself used to read books or mail, that sort of thing. Hope you can find your answer somewhere and solve this problem, theft of high school fund raising money is terrible!
