Anyone notice how genghis Juan looks like Hungrybox, I can’t be the only one
Holy Craperonis! I just realized that too!
You might be on to something man...
Thats actually kinda problematic because you're saying that 2 different people must look the same because of their ethnicity :/
@@onemannation8116
It's also super transphobic because they were making the assumption that Juan is only a male name, which is also heteronormative and part of patriarchy.
WHAT
I played hbox in friendlies at big house 9 and he did an off stage combo against someone else, answered a phone call mid combo, and ended with an unnecessary rest. Absolute mad man
Hbox isn't so great? Are you kidding me?
7:28 Hbox - "If my opponent makes no errors, i can't beat them"
Mang0 - "What i've come to realize as a spacies player, is you'll never play 100%. You might get close, but it's impossible to play these characters perfectly especially consistently".
I think this sums up exactly why Hbox has gotten so much hate over the years. He found the spacies kryptonite! This is also why I find his matches so exciting, if you want to see him lose you have to see damn near perfection on display. Melee really is a thing of beauty!
Also, I recreated what Mang0 said on stream from memory, I know it's not perfect but it's a good summary of what he said.
How's this working out for you now? Hbox still the clutchgod able to dismantle any pkayer?
@@firelifeblizzard8782 He definitely can, if he were to put his mind to it again. The Slippi era doesn't erase his legacy.
@@firelifeblizzard8782 Hbox didn't improve much while everyone else has been grinding away, so yeah, Hbox is not as good as he was pre Covid.
Literally every Smash Player to ever be the best has gone on a decline after 2-3 years of being number 1. You saw this with Mang0, Armada ended up retiring probably because he wanted to leave on a high note, and now the same is happening to Hungrybox. There's no need to act like a child because the Smash Player you despise is finally doing worse.
@@firelifeblizzard8782 On any given day, he could be the #1 Smash streamer, only ever losing out to the tool's favorite . He's got more fans and love than ever before. Probably more money too. He doesn't care about your petty #1 slot enough to wade through the toxic bullshit people like you have been slinging at him for nearly a decade. His focusing on Ultimate over Melee is a blessing you should be thanking him for as if he were a benevolent God, else he'd still be crushing The People's Champ, AKA Mr. Inconsistent himself on a regular basis.
What a fucking tool.
@@firelifeblizzard8782 shouldn't you be happy that he is distancing himself from melee tho?
Since.. You know
It is what you want?
Why do you need to shit on the man even more?
That's not to mention that he could go back after the online/slipii era calms out a little bit since it is vastly diffrent to offline
I am personally just glad he is doing much better mentally and physically and for his career wise
I could give 0 dams if he isn't a god anymore.. Heck!! Even if he drops melee!! (tho I don't see that happening any time soon honestly)
I will be happy if he is happy and is distancing himself from the toxic people
That genghis khan song slaps tho

100% do yourself a favour and look at the music video that comes with it, too. It's really something special.
I love Mango’s gamer nod at 13:46. At regular speed it just looks like HBox guessed a jump was gonna happen but Mango understood he got conditioned to react to the tomahawk. That’s so sick, I love this content.
It's so high level, honestly insane. Glad you enjoyed!
That what I love about melee the opantions respect him it is very suttle
You can see him go " Yep there it is, should've seen it coming"
Ye
Hey I feel compelled to ask, what is a tomahawk?
I would love to see more from Genghis Juan tbh
It was super interesting to watch!
He used to enter CFL locals with Fox all the time under the tag "Orlando Man"
That light shield response to the fireball... That is absolutely genius. Such game knowledge and sense... What!!
Holy shit, who else has ever even done that?
@@philiphunt-bull5817 Plus timing the light shield to hit him in the opposite direction with the tail of the ball too, mmmmm
*DID HE JUST POWERSHIELD FIREFOX INTO JAB?*
Where you talk about the up-smash and whether Juan knew it would kill if he charged longer, it's like this:
He kind of knew. It's a game sense thing.
When you play a game for a long time especially at a higher level, you just intuitively know things a lot of the time. You've done stuff before and seen it work, to the point where you don't actively think about multiple elements of what you're doing anymore.
Both Mango and Hbox use intuitive gameplay better than anyone else in the business.
So Hbox intuition said "this might kill if I charge a bit". He didn't know the exact amount or which angles, but he knows it might kill because he's seen it work before in other scenarios in the 10+ years he's been playing.
Did he know the exact frame based on % and stage he needed to upsmash? No. Obviously.
But he knew it could work, and knew what to do if it didn't. It was a gamble where he either gets the stock, or gets a favorable situation anyway.
M2K is famous for his unique style of play concentrated on scenarios like that, calculated risk where either way he wins or still doesn't lose anything.
But Hbox and Mango use a lot of that too. Normally Hbox will opt for it more when he needs to make a comeback or just feels like going in, and Mango will do it when he's feeling himself.
Hbox Fox in this instance wanted to go for it because he could. There were other plays to make, but his intuition said that might work or give him a good situation anyway, so he went for it.
The two very incorrect schools of thought that people who have never played any games at high level are either
"it was just a guess"
Or
"He totally knew the exact frame and % and blah blah blah because he has God tier game sense I can never achieve".
No, he's just played a lot at high level and understands the game, and therefore has good intuition from his unique in game and viewing experience to make more unique plays that you don't see from other players who don't have that intuition built, or don't use it.
Great insight! Thanks for the comment!
Fuckin neeeeeeeeeerd

This video is amazing. Everyone who watches a lot of melee saw "gengis juan" perform well at genesis black, but this video really shows how he did it and how impressive it was for him to do this with secondaries.
I don't love Hbox, but I have always thought that he doesn't get enough credit for his pure knowledge and skill in the game. good shit
Literally all the top 10 can top 8 a regional with secondaries lul
@@octaviogonzalez8794 I mean a lot of the criticism hbox gets is that he gets hard carried by his pick, and that he can't play a high skill character like Fox and place well. Well he played fox, a character thats not even his true secondary (since his actual secondary is Ness ), and placed top 8 at a tournament while playing and winning against dedicated fox mains. His performance is evident that as a player, H-box is truly one of the most insane players in terms of his game sense.
TPBvirus yeah, but then look at the people he was playing against, he would probably not make top 48 at a super major
TPBvirus also, being a dedicated fox main doesn’t make you a good fox main
@@gamerzss
yeah, but it means you would have to be pretty outclassed to lose the ditto against a novice fox
This man has been uploading S-tier content for like a year now, can we give it up for Walt please? 👏🏻 (And for melee of course)
Thank you so much!
Hell ya 👏
''Hungrybox will be competing under the alias Genghis Juan and will only play secondaries during the tournament.''
Imagine somebody saw this in the Liquidpedia article without knowing about it beforehand
The fact that he knew a light shield would impact the fireball at that height, and give him just enough pushback to get him to grab ledge for a punish is just absolute genius
13:04 This is one thing that seems super cool about higher-level Melee that doesn't seem to exist to such a great degree in Ultimate. Ultimate's speed seems to be slow enough that you can't really start to set up multiple options without it being sort of easy to read. But I'm also not a high-level player and haven't played Melee since I was a child.
I think it still exists in some capacity, but the pacing of the setup may be a bit more slow. I'm not too well-versed in Ultimate, but I think players can do something similar when ledge trapping to cover multiple options, for instance!
Walt, you are my premier smash content creator right now. I am very excited to see each new video you put out because of your crisp editing and high level of knowledge and analysis. Keep on going.

He's good enough to win without puff... and I really, really wanna see him do it.
Against the top 10? I don’t think so. Maybe in a like semi stacked tourney. But for sure not a stacked tourney.
ZachTheSloth but I agree he’s not bad with other characters.
Ain't nobody thinks he's number 1 without puff, but top 20? Yeah i think so. Or at least a few months of prep from top 20. A year from top 5.
ZachTheSloth agreed
like top 30 no puff, but he would actually have to seriously practice with fox/sheik to win a event as an alt

Hbox is a way more technical Borp
Genghis Juan vs. Borp Salty Suite 2020
@Rensi I am sorry, but after watching borp nearly clean a team with only his 4 stocks, I am terrified to think of Borp with Juan's overall skill/knowledge as a player. i.e. Borp's insane reads + the technical skill to pull more optimal plays/outplays.

Genghis Juan is genuinely a great name
he literally took an ok character and made several people think it was the best one in the game because of how fucking good he is at melee.
Yeah, a character with the best aerial drift the game, probably the best b-air in the game, the earliest kill setup in the game, and the best comeback mechanic in the game is just an okay character
@@gamerzss Back in the early days of Melee, Jigglypuff wasn't actually considered that good - the first official tier list actually has her in thr bottom 10. From the until around 2006/2008 she was considered roughly a mid/borderline tier character, ranked 7th at the highest. It wasn't until Hungrybox and others started dominating the scene with Jigglypuff that she was considered a top tier threat; this was reflected on the tenth official tier list where she rose up to 3rd.
TL;DR: Jigglypuff is a force to be reckoned with, but it took a while for the competitive scene to realise this. Back then, she was merely "an ok character".
@@gamerzss To be fair, if Hbox didn't exist as a top-level puff player, I feel like people wouldn't be talking about how good of a character jigglypuff is since Hbox is literally the only top puff.
Leffen: Yeah I'd like to see you try playing Fox.
HBox: I'll raise your Fox and I'll bet a Sheik.
I really struggle with game analysis. I would really like to hear your take on how it's done so I can finally watch gameplay for more than entertainment.
I've read some things on analyzing game design which can be pretty applicable to this! Broken down into some steps:
1. Without interpreting anything, describe what's happening in the game/a particular sequence. Just understand the game on a surface level.
2. Describe the results of that sequence. How did the players interact with each other? Was the sequence a success or failure?
3. Try to put yourself in the player's position and understand why they made those decisions. What could the player do differently? Are you finding any patterns?
I'm far from an expert, but I think a lot of it comes from a long period of time playing/watching the game! Commentators tend to do a good job at pointing out and explaining more intricate gameplay, so a full-fledged analysis can build on that as well.
Hope that helps some! Feel free to shoot me a message on our Community Discord if you want to chat more!

I have never particularly enjoyed watching Hbox, but i have never doubted his skill, it always baffled me when people try to discredit his skill because he plays puff or because they think he's "boring" or " gimmicky" or whatever. The fact that he wins consistently with puff actually always impressed me more.
Already during the breakdown of hbox vs null at 4:58 you say that the only move null could hit with is a f-air which isn’t true, he could’ve also done a n-air or instead of jumping after him, he could’ve wavelanded on the right platform and up-tilt him, of those 3 options I’d say h-box picked the worst one, but all the options there were good options
i think as a puff player his muscles memory made him fair
This genghis juan guy is pretty cool
He should definitely play in more tournaments
great song choice lmfao
I might be wrong but sometimes a thing Hbox tries to do similar things to mang0 so he can be more likeable, wearing the Cap America Liquid jersey a lot, change his tag and use others characters, dont get me wrong he is a beast top 3 all time but i just find this things so curious
