The marathon king who changed the Olympics forever - BBC Africa

- From serving Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia to becoming a marathon legend, Abebe Bikila made history as the first black African man to win an Olympic gold medal. He was also the first athlete to defend a marathon Olympic title. After years running at the top of his game, he suffered life changing injuries leaving him unable to walk. But he picked himself up and competed and won in competitions for disabled athletes. World famous while he was alive, he has inspired generations of athletes, but his incredible story has been forgotten by many outside of his home country.

I was one of the thousands upon thousands of young Ethiopians who were at the Airport when Abebe Bkela ,returned home from Rome. We went on foot about five miles from the Airport to the Place, accompanying him. It was the happiest day for the young Ethiopians.
So sweet ❤
Wooww how old are you
THANKS 🙏🙏🙏
Bikila ❤ nothing but love from South Africa
I love S Africa because of BRICS..
Abebe Bikila's achievements rose above personal hardships, national strife, and international politics.
Several years ago I met Wami Beratu at a picnic. Nobody noticed him. I introduced him to the crowd and he was was warmly welcomed. He is over 100 years old. A humble & graceful Ethiopian legend!

It looks like from life history that he was not only the warrior in the ground of sports but in the tragedies and battles of life as well. He is not only the best player of the nation but looks like the national hero.
Man of great honour and great dignity. Such are not born without the exaggerate love of fade for the nation.
He stands tall on the pantheon of the immortals, none greater he...I remember Abebe Bikila
I saw his performance in Rome where he ran bare foot, I got goosebumps just seeing it.

A phenomenal athlete and an even greater human being. The likes of Abebe Bikila are not found in any walk of life anywhere in this increasingly corrupt and venal world where character and integrity are sacrificed at the altar of wealth and profit
It’s always one that paves the way to many ❤️
He is well respected in Japan than in Africa... Miss u bare footed hero

My father told me about this man when I was a boy and how he won the two marathons. My father never liked to wear shoes.

Abebe Bekila and king Haile Sellase are the first Pan Africanists and they changed Africa from nothing into something more to be proud about.
Hats off to our Ethiopian brothers & sisters athletes. You make the rest of Africa proud on the world stage! Much love and respect!
You are hero and legend, your name will will live forever carved in every Ethiopian hearts. Respect you and love you my big brother.
What an amazing human being coming on top of several life obstacles. I hope the documentary was longer.
Salute to such a great marathon runner ❤💐🫡
In light of the East African domination in long distance running the last 50 or so years it feels peculiar to think that it had a start in time.
pay attention to those rhythmic harmonics, I can watch Abebe Bikila run many6 times
Abebe 🇪🇹 Bikila Our African pride ❤👍💪
The current record holder in the women's marathon is also from Ethiopia. And she's 4 min faster than this guy's gold medal run.
Radi Ben Abdessalam 🇲🇦 was second in Roma Marathon after Abebe Bkela of Ethiopia 🇪🇹

What a story of a legend!
Legend
He's our national treasure 💚💛❤
For ever our Ethiopian HERO 💚💛❤️
Legend🙌
May God Bless Him.
He would go on to be considered as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time, but it was only through a stroke of fortune that Abebe Bikila even featured at Rome 1960. He was not originally selected for the Ethiopian team, and was only added at the last minute after Wami Biratu was injured while playing in a football match though Tamirat Tola was in 2024 Paris Olympics. They both added to National team at the last time and also set Olympic record. ከበቀደሙ የታምራት ቶላ ሸፍጥ ጋር አይመሳሰልም?
Absolutely fascinating!
I am proud of my country legends
Symbol of Winner!
As legend and great as he was he was not given a much more prominent location for his memorial. A major airport in the capital or a huge stadium currently under construction should be named after him.His current memorial is in the backyard. It should be moved to the front because he was always up front. I hope the authorities would consider this .
Abebe Bikila The Ethiopiana! Am the Ethiopian and Free Palestine...I we earn it!🇪🇹!
He is special in Ethiopia in that Rome Olympics because his generation experienced the invasion of Italy of their homeland.
One of the greatest 🐐
Hero ❤legendary much respect ✊🏾
And the only one to run marathon bare foot and win
Ethiopa ❤
Our hero 💚💛❤️
Incredible
I like the story told by a New Zealand marathon runner about the 1960 race. The runners were gather for the start ( it didn't start in the stadium ) when the New Zealander saw this emaciated looking African athlete peeing by the side of the road. "Well" said the New Zealander to himself, " at least I'll beat that chap". But, to be fair, up until 1960, black Africans hadn't won any long distances races of note.
Tamirat Tola reminded me of Abebe Bikila.
BBC. Sen harikasın. Dünya milletlerinin ing.den öğrenecekleri çok şeyler var. 😂😅😊
He is my blood, proud Ethiopian .
