    Hi, I wish you made the distinction that estrogen and progesterone increase prolactin production, but they inhibit the effect of prolactin on the production of milk during pregnancy. Once the placenta is delivered, a drop in estrogen, progesterone, and dopamine, allow prolactin to stimulate lactation.

    Great video as always, thank you. Around minute 14 you say too much estrogen inhibits the action of prolactin (PRL) during pregnancy, but I believe it is progesterone during pregnancy that inhibits PRL's effects. Keep up the good work - you and your team are truly an inspiration.

    Awesome video! I have a question about the relationship among estradiol, prolactin, and dopamine. I understand that estrogen inhibits dopamine, which in turn leads to elevated prolactin. Why, then, is there so much research that shows that estrogen stimulates dopamine release? What is the mechanism of action? If estrogen stimulates dopamine, should it not inhibit prolactin? Yet, we know elevated estradiol leads to elevated prolactin, because estrogen inhibits dopamine. I can't seem to grasp how estradiol has both paradoxical effects: it inhibits dopamine to stimulate prolactin; yet studies show estradiol potentiates dopamine while simultaneously increasing prolactin. Any clarification is appreciated.

    • @Opethfeldt
      @Opethfeldt Před 2 lety +4

      Estrogen has stimulating effects on prolactin secretion, independent of dopamine. In addition, while estrogen can increase dopamine, it also increases serotonin, which in turn lowers dopamine and increases prolactin. It's all rather complex but in practice, prolactin is actually a better marker for someone's estrogen levels than an actual estrogen blood test.

    • @pedrorodrigueztube
      @pedrorodrigueztube Před 2 lety +1

      Maybe is a matter of estrogen level. Very high = prolactin release. Moderate = Dopamine release.
      I guess in males some estrogen is needed to release Dopamine because once I heard crashed estrogen makes prolactin spike up

    Zach, dude, I've been leaving quite a few comments under a lot of your lecture. U don't feel like writing about it in depth at the moment but a 10x legal dosage overdose was deliberately administered to me late September 2007. It nearly killed me. Now I have a wide range of medical conditions-mainly seen in elderly people ( I'm 46) but my blood work done once I'd figured out what had happened to me I called on my uni biochemistry and pharmacology. As well as many other endorphin interference problems they caused were hyperprolactinemia. I was told normal Prolactin level for a male was one said 270, the other said 320 was maximum healthy for males. My level was 898, I was told that's the level of a breastfeeding mother. The alteration in mental state associated with this is to develop and display an unusual maternally protective aggression/ almost psychotic agitation and protectiveness and somewhat aggressive mannerism s. This, of course, is unusual for a male and open to misinterpretation by your average mental health professional. It's just a nasty extrapyramidal side effect, while one of the primary deliberate effects is to amplify all types of norepinephrine production and increasing reception of them while blocking all ~25 of the dopamines and all~15 types of serotonin. I was turned into one of the world's nastiest pasties. 46yo West Australia male Perth

      This question is pretty old, but in case this helps someone, I'll give the sliver of knowledge I have. SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) inhibit dopamine, which could result in an over-production of PRL and may then result in lack of menstrual cycle and milk secretion. Might be worth investigating.

    William Walsh talks about high copper after pregnancy being the cause of post natal depression. I believe it is related to the high estrogen. So maybe addressing the high copper levels might also stimulate lactation?
    But maybe the copper stays high while the estrogen drops.
    Zinc is necessary to lower the copper. And I know iodine can change the two bad estrogens into the good to change cystic breast tissue. It works very quickly as I tried it myself in relatively high doses.
    I also know DIM and broccoli sprout extract work on estrogens. I'm wondering if they help lower the estrogen as well. I just found that iodine can lower estrogen in dominance so it could be low iodine causing problems in starting lactation.
    I have suspected low dopamine for myself but never knew it could be connected to sleep. So the high prolactin can cause sleeping issues which is new to me. Yet another insight to sleeping disorders.
    Thank you!
