I have loved Cohen's music and poetry all my life. I never could see him live, but for this one night, in Marseille. All stars and planets lined up and I was at the right place, at the right time. I will never experience anything so moving ever again. The week before he performed this song in Marseille, Nicolas Sarkozy, the then President of the Republic of France, called for all Roma, or gypsy, to be expulsed from France. The tingling ran through the entire crowd assembled in the DOME, like a magnetic storm.
Leonard's 76th birthday, and he is sharing it with us....the most generous and humble man you could wish to meet...and I was lucky enough to do that at an earlier concert.
Absolutely haunting ......it is as if the band and Leonard have reached the apotheosis of their craft......I thinkIi have drifted to heaven...Thanks Albert for your wonderful filming, as ever...you and Marie must be on a perpetual high, because I am , and I have only been to one concert!.....
Leonard se demandait en ces fabuleux soirs de Marseille pourquoi il était tant applaudi par la salle avec les chansons "gypsy"; mais le Sarkofacho venait de détruire des campements gitans au bulldozer et le public saluait la chanson comme un hymne d'ouverture et de fraternité. Sacré Cohen !
