My first duty station, I was stationed there between 04 to 08. I spent two years at Ft. Hood, TX and did my last 3 years at Schofield Barracks, HI before I got out. If I could back to Lewis I would in a heartbeat I miss that place.

Spent 3.2 years there in the early 2000's. Nice base and a lot of gyms. I liked the gym on North Fort the best. My daughter was born at Madigan Army hospital. If you get orders for Ft. Lewis be happy.

That was my last stop in my Army time. I was stationed there from 1988 to 1989. I got out there and drove back home. I have to admit it was a beautiful Fort and surrounding area. For a little while I lived off post in Olympia WA.

I was station there from 88-89 myself. I drove from Va to FT Lewis also, my son was born there at the old hospital in June of 88 I lived in Tumwater just past the Olympia beer factory. Still remember that whistle at that factory.

In early ‘90s had occasion to visit Ft Lewis several times a year as 🇨🇦 Regular Force (your active) assisting Army Reserve unit in training. Found Fort Lewis to be a beautiful base and any staff I dealt with such as Range Control & Food Services always very helpful. 👍

I shipped out to Vietnam from Fort Lewis on January 5, 1970, I was an infantryman with the rank of PFC. I came back to Fort Lewis from Vietnam as a second lieutenant almost 2 years later. I reenlisted in Vietnam and took my 30 day leave in Hong Kong. within three weeks of arriving in Vietnam I was promoted to E4. Rank came like a fire hydrant if you were a good infantryman and did what you were told with a little spirit! In November 1970 I was given a direct commission or what is called a battlefield commission. Our unit was with the 101st airborne division, Stationed 8 km from the north Vietnam line. We Had the misfortune of making contact almost every time we deployed on a mission. when you receive a direct commission you are at the discretion of your company commander as well as the battalion commander. I was the executive officer of Alpha Company 502nd Infantry. our company commander was also a Mustang and arrived in Vietnam as an E6 direct from Germany and was one ass kicking Grunt! not to make a ridiculously long story but there was a process where you could become a captain in two years and one day if you had all of your tickets punched (no disciplinary & you earned a purple heart and another valor award) was You become a second lieutenant and automatically on your first anniversary you become a first lieutenant. One year from your first Lieutenant date of promotion you are now eligible to become an O--3. therefore the phrase "Tracks in Two" Was a very popular term if you wanted to stay in the Army Post Vietnam. many of the troops turn down any and all commendations and awards just like me they were drafted and they didn't give a fuck about the army or Vietnam or anything other than going home. I saw a good opportunity and I took it. So when I got injured regardless of how petty I am mediately put in for the Purple Heart and if you are injured while engaged in combat, and it's documented you will be awarded! Of course we all got the CIB the first time we were in a fire fight. my Purple Heart was due to diving into a bunker that had been abandoned by the French god knows how many decades ago and the bunker was partially collapsed and as soon as I hit the door the wrong way the rest of it came down on me. Anyway, before I could get promoted to first lieutenant we had orders to stand down! The 101st airborne division was going to go back to Fort Campbell. All promotions were negated. we had come back to camp eagle to stand down and resupply when the orders came down that everyone that had been in country six months or more was to be in formation at 4 AM in the company area and we were advised we will be going to Da Nang to undergo out processing and return to the world. Total shock! We arrived in Da Nang on a chinook and immediately started out processing, the first thing we did was to take a piss test in front of several Navy medics. Heroin use were so prevalent that even the chaplains were not exempt from this piss test and if you failed you were immediately placed under arrest and taken to the field hospital. Our debriefing was intense and then we had a representative from the veterans administration explaining our benefits and how to file for them. We had a shut down and every had that wasn't issued by the army was confiscated. My flight home was on a flying Tigers stretched DC eight. From Danang to yakota Air Force Base Japan and then on to Fort Lewis. we picked up a new crew in Japan and we were allowed to get out and stretch our legs and have some of the worst pizza on earth. We were told it when we were close to Port Louis a steak dinner would be waiting for us at the Ponderosa steakhouse inside Fort Lewis. Well that didn't happen because US customs 🛃 went through us like a fine tooth comb and by the time they cleared off our group the steakhouse was closed. We spent 32 hours nonstop no sleep going from the station to that station getting a physical a haircut a brand new class a uniform and then we were taken to a career building and given a number and then when our number was called the person behind the desk had our file and would tell us our fate. The vast majority of us regardless of how much time we had in were dismissed from further duty. Unless you had a very rare MOS that the army needed, you were no longer necessary and being infantry was first on the list they had no place for infantry personnel! And they told us if you are infantry artillery or armor, you are getting out of the army today. Regardless of what your contract said whether you were a two-year draftee, or had gone the route of regular army and had a six year commitment Active-duty, it all ends today! my paperwork was already in for a promotion to first lieutenant I had gone before the board and passed my battalion commander my company commander both encourage me and give me a Stellar letter of reference. Technically I was a first lieutenant as far as the time frame goes but the army has its ways all they wanted at this point was to start flushing as many people as they could as fast as they could. We had a breakfast that I think most of us don't remember because we were sleeping through it with all the Jetlag and all the bad news we were getting.
we were bust over to a chapel and inside the chapel was a long table with different army personnel essentially what that was all about was giving you your final pay plus your travel pay to get to wherever your home of record was. The final act before you could board the bus for the airport was to turn in your ID card. There was a lieutenant colonel who was in charge of that and his duty was to read off to you what your obligation is to the army and what their obligation is to you for the next 24 hours. He was nowhere to be found. So instead of us just waiting for this guy who never did show, an E7 basically stated that for the next 24 hours or until the time we walk into our front door we were still under the protection and discipline of the department of defense. What that meant was if we were to go downtown Seattle in our uniform and get shitfaced drunk and picked up we would be brought back to Fort Lewis and put it in the brig! On the other hand if we were to get injured on the way home being an auto accident aircraft accident a fight or a natural disaster, we were still under the umbrella of the department of defense and to report to the nearest emergency room and inform them and give them a copy of your orders because Uncle Sam will take care of it until you actually get home. He asked us if we all had our pay if we all had our questions answered, if we were ready to leave. I resounding yes and we were on our way to SeaTac. At the airport I noticed several enlisted men We're changing into civilian clothes and stuffing their uniforms into those lockers in the wall that they used to have back then. They would buy a ball cap from the souvenir stand to hide the fact that they were servicemen and then try to mix in with the crowd. two years after I got home I got a letter from the army telling me I was going to report to fort Riley Kansas to take part in the FTX with the 69th infantry division. That is the Kansas National Guard! they were so understrength they didn't have enough soldiers to conduct their yearly 30 day training. Well I thought it would be absolutely fascinating! I didn't have any uniforms at all I was married and had a baby on the way. I noticed that the letter was addressed to Sergeant and not Lieutenant and that really pissed me off! So I called the person who had signed the letter and wanted to get to the bottom of it. He informed me that my rank was not permanent and that infact I had a six year commitment like everyone in the army . and that after six years I would receive an honorable discharge in the highest rank that I had ever-held. I requested an exemption from this training exercise because my wife was about to deliver and I was a highway patrolman with the department of public safety and a certified paramedic, considered to be a vital occupation. I also stated that I had no uniforms whatsoever and this would be a terrible hardship but if they needed me that bad i'd go. I received an exemption in the mail and six years to the date of my induction I received from St. Louis Missouri my honorable discharge! to my surprise as a 2nd lieutenant! Completely worthless of course but I thought it was cool.

General Harrison, 3star was in charge when I was at Lewis. I saw him once in person. I was on a guard duty detail at the time and he pulled up. He got out and everyone came to attention. I did too. The general was respectful to his guards, which I was one,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,, General Harrison has my respect but he is forgotten as much as the fly I slapped last night with the fluky swatted.
