⚠️Y'all I got news!! Wavve a Korean streaming platform is going to air 2 LGBT couple/dating shows in July!! "Merry Queer"(1st ep aired 8/7 ) has more of a reality show feel to it with 3 lgbt couples and their daily lives and struggles!! The couples/cast is well picked, and the MC is also top-notch (Hani, Hong Seokcheon and Shin Dong Yup)!! I personally enjoyed the first ep!!
"Man's Romance" (airs 15/7)on the other hand is like love catcher, heart signal, transit love etc. like any other Korean dating show BUT this time with ONLY Bi/Gay men participating!!

I see some comments about wanting to see reactions to Korean gay couples... but sadly, coming out in public is not a reality for most korean gay guys. There are no laws that protect us from hate crimes, being fired from our jobs, or being unfairly shown in a negative light in media. Many of my gay friends have been disowned by family and many people simply think of it as a fetish. I hope videos like this will help spread positive awareness and start a greater conversation within Korea!

yea and ntm A LOT of the gay korean youtubers I watch currently, most of their faces are usually BLURRED out which I totally understand and I hope one day Korea truly progresses over time for gay couples to wanna express themselves the way they feel they want to. Also I agree with you and for example, many women esp sometimes fetishize over two guys being together and I think that additionally comes with the portrayal of "BLS" and no I am not saying BLS are bad but BLS do play a role in harmful stereotypes and perceptions of the gay community sometimes and this does lead to immense fetishizing of 2 men as if they are not real valid people with real struggles and true regular everyday emotions.
Yeahh i totally get u bcuz its not only Korea but majority of the south asian countries except taiwan(correct me if there r more) where gay or any ppl from the LGBTQ+ community is still treated as people who hve mental disease, n the govt doesn't do anything to protect them in the majority of the countries which makes hate crime towards them a norm😖😡....i just hope we can go past all these n ppl get to be judged by their character n not their sexuality, cast, gender, religion 😔

Not everything is homophobic. But they indeed need more education because some of the things they said are offensive.

I can't help feeling the need to laugh whenever someone says: "they're just like normal couples". I just wonder what goes through people's head to make them say that? It's like how people diss those with disabilities treating them like they've lost it just because they're existing in their way. Of course they're normal and like everyone else😊, they are everyone else.

Most Koreans will tell you they have NEVER met a real-life lgbtq person in their life. That is because most of them are still in the closet here. And given that they've never had the opportunity to meet and talk to them, I think they are really trying to understand, empathize and acknowledge. Real normalizing will come when the law changes, more brave souls come out, and socity learns to love and accept them. Baby steps!

OR maybe they used "normal" as "the norm/the majority" which would be correct as gay people make up only 6% of the population => a minority

Also the translation from korean to english isn't word by word possible on that I would say, well the way he say it from how I get it is more like "well yeah we watched gay couples videos but I don't see any difference it's like any/usual couple videos" it's not exactly like the normal word in english well at least that's how I take it 😊 they really didn't have any bad words here and honestly for a korean guy being this open to male gay couples is quite nice to see Korea is very conservative and not totally open on many topics like being gay or just I would say different (tattoo, not wanting to be married, choosing a different career path, foreigners etc) that in the west we have been pushing for strongly more and more. But at the same time Korea is going fast on that from what I see since few years 😊

To anwer the intro: yes you can take turns but useally you don´t cause a sub and a dom is diffrent from a top or a bottom. you can be a sub and a top or a bottom at the same time. Being a dom is more like being the dominant part/person in the relationship while being a sub is tending to be the more submissive part/person- it has not 100% to do with the sexual part in a relatioship but more like the preference of personality/character someone brings with them in the realtioship. It also depends on the person you´re in a relatioship with. I hope this makes sense?

The terms dom and sub can be used outside of sexual content for example as identifying themselves in a non or existent role in a relationship- it really depends on if you want to or not want to put a label on yourself.
Edit: but it still is different from a bottom or a top you can be a top but submissive or a bottom and dominant. A bottom and a top are usually the one “role” you would describe yourself when you wanna tell someone you’re on the receiving or giving part during sex. Usually ppl who are identifying themselves as a switch wouldn’t bother with these terms so 🤷🏻♀️

Yes I know, I don’t think they meant it in a bad way, they are just not used to seeing this. To be fair, seeing lgbtq+ people or couples on the streets, in this kind of conservative countries, is not as usual as in the states or some European countries. I’m telling you this since I come from a country where lgbtq+ people is not something that people accept. I am still in the closet bc of that. The fact that they were accepting and kind is already a win, since you will expect hate and discrimination from most Koreans. Remember their culture and society has taught them this is wrong, all their life, they are learning how to let go those hateful ideas. They just don’t know how to express themselves in a more sensitive way.

I read a comment that said that they didn’t actually say normal, but that it was translated like that. Someone said that they said something along the lines of: “we watched gay couple videos, but I don’t see any difference, it’s like any/usual couple videos.”
Disclaimer: I don’t speak Korean so I’m not a 100% certain, but I do know that you need to take in consideration that what they say is not always 100% the same as the translation. I speak English and Dutch myself and even those translations aren’t always a 100% correct

I think this is bc they do not have a lot of contact with the lgbtq + community in Korea. They do not really know how to express themselves in a way they do not harm people. I don’t think it came from a hateful place, they just need to be more in touch with this topic. I live in a country as conservative as Korea and I have friends that have say this to me or other friends with partners, and they just say it like that bc, since the do not see a lot (if none) gay couples they do not know what to expect. Is just about obliviousness towards lgbtq+ community. Not all countries have the luxury to be as open as USA. Europe or Australia.
