BGC in the Philippines is an area in Taguig near Manila. BGC is known for its modern amenities, nice restaurants, high-end condos, etc. offering a more lavish lifestyle for residents. In this video I give my personal reasons for not living in BGC in the Philippines.

i worked in BGC for a decade then got tired of the urban living so I went back to my province. I visit BGC once in a while though. but although i prefer the countryside, imho, we Filipinos dont judge people based on what they wear. As long as you don't stink, you respect the law and the culture, you will be liked in here whether you're in BGC or in the province.
To add to this, we're sometines even proud of how much we save when we buy stuff instead of bragging how expensive they are 😂
You dont get to speak for others. Just because you dont judge people for their looks, doesn't mean others are the same as you. Its purely subjective

I currently live in the US but i'm from Zamboanga and grew up half of my childhood there. It is far safer than in alot of US cities including the one i live in which is LA and not only is it safer, but just like you i had never felt unsafe in all the years i lived there or anywhere else in the PH for that matter.

My girlfriends dog was sick a couple weeks ago. She took him for a brief walk. It was 2 o’clock in the morning. She or I not only thought about safety. Safety was never considered. To me this is possibly the safest place on earth.
I ran into a subscriber who told me she left the US and moved to BGC because of her safety concerns for her kids in the US. She told me she feels safe walking home alone at 2am from Uptown Parade to her condo nearby
You will never be judged by Filipinos based on what you wear whether u are in BGC or in the province except of course when you attend a formal function or occasion where a certain dress code is required. Even in big malls in Manila , you will see Filipinos wearing flip flops and just plain tshirt and shorts. So it depends on what kind of lifestyle you really want whether the provincial simple living or the city life. Overall, where ever you go, when you meet a Filipino he will always be nice to you .
Oddly, casinos really do care!

Johnathan, Your BGC video has convinced me that BGC may be the place for me. I live in Cebu City ( Ayala Business Park ) which is BGC on a smaller scale. I love it here also. We have Denny’s, TGI Fridays, Texas Roadhouse, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Chili’s, Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. I don’t care for Fish or Rice, so I like to have the U.S. restaurants available. I do like some of the Filipino based franchises also. What I like about The Business Park and BGC is, like you said, there’s a Security Officer every 100 yards, no overhead wires, the sidewalks are in good repair and wild dogs are not seen. I enjoy the higher end clothing stores ie: Zara, Mango Man, Arrow, Giordano, Guess, Calvin Kline, and such. We live in what I guess you would classify as a Luxury Condo, that is on top of the Ayala Mall, so we have direct access to the Ayala Mall without using our car or going outside, if we don’t want to. When we want the Province experience we book a hotel in Panglao, Bohol, and enjoy the resorts there. I worked hard all of my life and live a comfortable lifestyle, so having rent the same as my U.S. mortgage isn’t a problem. I guess you can say that we are blessed.
I felt exactly the same, me and my wife spent April travelling Luzon, we spent time in the mountain province with local people.
Then we spent 1 week in Manila and visited BGC.

Life in bgc is not fast paced. You can do your own leisurely walk all over bgc. It's safe and clean. You don't see the people walking fast even in bgc.
@@wavemaker2077 I work in BGC.. people actually walk-run during rush hours. We just don't usually take the high street or park areas route. We go straight to the commuters area or parking area.
@@wavemaker2077 I was going to say, all the videos I've watched of BGC it looks very spacious with a lot more personal space, beauty, and a lot less noise. It looked slow paced and stress free to me in this video and many other videos I've watched.
I get you. This is why as a Manileño, I prefer Makati. At least there, you can find streetfood carts and "jollyjeeps" where employees can get more affordable meals, carinderia style around the city.
I've been reading comments, and would just like to correct a misconception from some of your viewers, probably foreigners --that most Filipinos are overly proud of BGC, with big dreams of living there. That's not true. If only there are job opportunities available in the provinces, I'm willing to bet most of us would not choose to live here in Manila. If they only knew....
I agree the reason why more Filipinos chose to live in Metro Manila because of the jobs that are not available in urban areas of the Philippines. People from all different regions have to find a job and also students prefer to stay in the cities of Manila.
I worked in BGC for 14 years and believe me, you can find cheaper options nearby. There's a lot of carenderia and street foods in Estrella and Cembo side which is just a walking distance from BGC.

Yes its true that most of the time because you work or live in the corporate side of the Philippines then you have to dress to impress, but then you can still just wear shorts and shirts or anything that makes you feel comfortable. Just be yourself, it doesn't matter what you wear just be nice and respectful of the people around you, Filipinos are pretty accepting.
I like to visit BGC around Christmas time for the lights and Christmas decorations. It's magical. But after a while I miss the beach, the mountains, the green fields and the fresh air of the provinces.

I know what you mean. I lived in Makati for 4 years and go to BGC from time to time, I was even there last Saturday. You have everything in BGC; fast internet, no brownouts, malls, restaurants, shops, safety, etc. However, I still choose to live in the province for these reasons:
-Yes, BGC has greeneries and it's clean. However, you just can't compare it to the turquoise waters and lush greens in the provinces.
-BGC feels like you always have to move. Yes, you can sit but it doesn't offer the same relaxation as when you sit on a random sidewalk in the province. Not to mention relaxing on a random beach.
-BGC is loud. It's not loud-loud but it's still in the city.
-The province gives me a feeling of freedom. I can ride a motorbike for hours, not worry about traffic, and feel the air in my hair. This is the biggest reason why I love the provinces. And I know you know this, driving in Siargao, driving in Bohol. You don't get this in the cities.
i arrived in the Philippines 20 years ago and went to boracay, i ate grilled bbq sticks for 5 pesos, drank tanduay, lived in a house more common to Philippines, im so glad i did, had i arrived and seen BGC i think i would have been tempted to just stay there because it is beautiful, safe and familiar but i would of missed out on the whole Philippine experience.
i was stationed at Clark for 4 years and it was appalling how many of the americans never went more than a few miles from the base. - the area around clark was NOT representative of the rest of the country. - the best times I had were roaming around and exploring area far away from those americanized zones around the bases.
20 years ago you wouldn't have to worry about BGC, it didn't exist
BGC is rough just 15 to 20 years old so 20 years ago, it was just mostly grass and pavements 😊

Im an islander from a small island in the visayas but living in Manila. If Philippines's life is relax, true, but it is very well relax living in the province. Yes we drink alcohol in group using one cup only and that means you belong to the group. That represents Filipino Culture, we dont want one is left behind, we want others to be in the cluster group or tribe. Bayanihan is also a very Filipino thing as sample of togetherness. Ok so welcome in the Philippines Islands, Mabuhay !!!

I think this was an excellent video, however after watching it, I think it makes me want to live in BGC more than ever. I'd rather live here and travel to see the provinces I think. I agree that your video actually lists more positives than negatives, it is just a matter of preference.
Your point about traveling to other areas from there is actually one of the reasons I would consider living there. It has the Manila airport with access to the entire country. Where I currently live I usually need to fly to Manila to get a connecting flight to go to another island. So you could live in BGC and easily get to other areas when you want a trip

Yes, there is a price to pay for all that convenience at your fingertips, air conditioned malls,condos with amenities, I’m from Negros Occidental about half an hour from Bacolod and I prefer the laidback simple province life, Cities for me is good to visit but not to stay.
For me its urban versus rural, that sentiment is worldwide, i have lived both, nothing beats walking barefoot on the sand or ground, enjoyed the video Jonathan 👌

That’s what’s great about the PHILLIPINES there’s the BGC lifestyle and also further the island lifestyle. Depends on the persons preference.
I also prefer provinces like Bohol and Cebu because of Fresh Food,Nature and Beaches

There are street food vendors and carinderias that you can easily go to if you live in BGC. You have to know the area. There are street food vendors and carinderias at Mini Park near SM Aura. Also, there are street food vendors behind a wall near Grand Hyatt. These are all within easy walking distance.
Yes I definitely know of the “secret gap” behind grand Hyatt where all the workers go to the Barangay to have an inexpensive meal. 🤫
You really need to be a local of bgc to know those secrets. Bgc won't be so expensive anymore if you know where to buy those local foods.
I am here in Pasig, Jon. Just a few minutes away from BGC, but I never considered living in BGC hehe. it is expensive and the life is not representative of what the Philippines is all about. I worked in a company at McKinley for three years and the environment is not easy for common mass. Too fancy. 🤭

It is a quick grab ride to "authentic Philippines." Heck there are places where you can walk into it. The BGC haters tend to be city haters, and most expats are on a fixed budget and BGC might be out of reach anyway. While I am not a huge fan of big cities, if you are going to live in a city, BGC is one of the Best in Asia, and a great comparison worldwide. I personally like Makati a bit more, as it is closer to more "rustic" areas. The real appeal to BGC or Makati for a foreigner, is that you can own a condo, fly into manila, near NAIA, spend some time in the city, and jump to anywhere in the Philippines or Asia pretty quickly. When its time to leave, I turn everything off, lock the door and go.
“Authentic” to some means being stuck in poverty 😂 that’s absolutely small minded. Progress is good guys. Eliminate your “programming”.
Exactly. I stay in one of our condos in Ortigas and it's a good central base for me driving and flying wise. Driving wise I can easily reach BGC via the new bridge in 15 minutes and only 35 minutes to Trinoma. Ortigas is also walkable like BGC, my family does about 10,000 steps a day walking from our condo to the nearby malls. When it's time for me to fly back to HK I call Admin and tell them to turn off the power and water and to double check if the door is locked. A very nice and simple lifestyle
BGC is great, but I also prefer the quiet beach life in the islands. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. 🏝👍

BGC is what the PHL would have been if it were at par in terms of development and progress with Singapore. It is an "aspirational city" which is not a bad thing. It gives those who can afford to live in it the lifestyle that their money can buy.
Agree. I've also noticed that some new developments in the country, they always refer them as BGC like...
It's not about development, I think. It's about urban planning. I was just in the Philippines early this month and spent a few days in BGC. It's well-planned, but still lacking. There is no roadside parking, causing drivers to park in the right lane. Not all intersections have traffic lights, thus still relying on the tried and true Pinoy style of driving. I will say that it is a very pedestrian-friendly city. All in all, I like it if I don't have to worry about parking.

The reasons why Philippines is poor are because of religious and political extremism. Only country in the world with no divorce (Vatican don't count) and population growth esp by the poor sector. Education is also now becoming really bad because of the population growth, too many students, lack of classrooms and capable teachers. The Filipino mindset of not caring for their neighbors is appalling too, from videoke all day all night in full blast to burning garbage in their yards morning and afternoon. It's crazy. Keeps on electing people who paid them too and politicians are corrupt and killers.
I'm not long back from the Philippines, Stayed in Ilocos Norte. Very green and mountainous but on the way home to Ireland I had 24 hrs in Manilla so went to BGC. It's nice and clean but after about an hour or so, I wanted Ilocos Norte

@@robocop581 Lacked vegetables? Vegetable dishes are their main staple in Ilocos Norte. That's why I stayed here because the food is way better and healthier than the popular Filipino food that's sweet and greasy.

The whole of BGC is privately owned by large developers, even the roads, so even if sidewalk vendors are allowed there, they will need to pay premium, which they can't afford without a crazy price increase on their supposed to be affordable products if sold anywhere else in the Philippines.
Of course there are viewers who instantly get the wrong idea and be offended but i'm filipino and i know exactly what you mean about BGC not feeling filipino. It feels like i'm walking down just another high end neighborhood in some western country. It lacks character, personality and the feeling of community and closeness that is typical of a filipino community in comparison with the other barangays.

All countries have big cities and obviously, they are not the same as the countryside. The kind of culture that you'll experience from the big city doesn't mean you aren't experiencing real Filipino culture. The fact that Manila has Denny's and all those American chains should give you an insight of how heavily influenced the PH is by the US. That's part of their culture and I respect that. As a German who loves traveling to the PH, I enjoy both the city and the countryside and I won't even bother to wax poetic about the differences. Just enjoy them and shy away from comparing. Apologies for the unsolicited advice. Btw I personally enjoyed my one week stay in BGC last year and I would stay there again if and when I come back.
Right. These foreigners think the real, authentic Philippines is living in poverty. We have that side but you can also experience the real Filipino culture in more affluent places like BGC.

I agree, I bought a condo there and sold it 2 years ago for 14million, it’s good only for a short stay or for air b&b but not for me, I bought a home that cost 4 million and now it’s valued at 12 million

For me, BGC falls into the category of nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. It pretty much negates the myriad of reasons one would want to leave their current first world location.

Man, you just sold me on BGC (Apple store). My wife has paid off house 1.5 hour away in Pampanga but my office is in Makita so I will do the studio/ 1 bedroom thing during business week and commute to the provinces on weekend. That will be the next hurdle, commuting. Great video, thanks!
I can never live in big cities, wherever in the world. I can not imagine myself between 4 walls called apartments or suits. I feel like I am trapped in a chicken cage. Why am I forced to live in dirty, hot, very crowded, noisy, expensive and unsafe (In general) big cities? To work as per my education, and make money. And to pay for a very costly living and taxes and transportation, etc . . . . Well, a very small farm in a barangay will give you almost all of your needs without the pollution, dirt, noise and high costs. That's why I will never invest in the big cities, but farms instead. We went to the Philippines last year - Metro Manila and other big cities air quality is really bad. You really have to get outside the big cities for better air quality.

100% felt you bro. I was born there. Left in 95 (11years old). Visited 2013, 2018, (didn't stay at bgc), but April 2024 stayed at Uptown BGC.. yes convenient AF w American ways... but didn't feel the Philippines Spirit... I had to leave BGC to actually feel that amazing humble presence of the Filipino people cuz BGC felt so Westernized that the only Filipino feeling you do get are from the local Filipino workers working there that don't actually live there. There's a "butas" btw a whole in a wall which is kind of a portal where all the workers go from where they live to BGc. Tried to go there but couldn't find it. Heard it's behind Mitsukoshi Mall. . Should do a vid and let us know how to get there
BGC/Eastwood/Ortigas is considered a “bubble”…but some of us DO like the amenities and use these modern areas as a springboard to visiting the Province which isn’t equally “right” for everyone as well! 🫰🏻

I'm American and liked BGC, but I know what you mean about reason number 3. I felt awkward walking around in flip flops and gym shorts 😅 I definitely didn't think anyone was judging, but I did feel out of place.
No one will judge you even in bgc. Though you do have to dress based on the environment. The same thing that you cannot dress like going to a ballroom party when you are in boracay.
Country living is the best. IT'S SO GREEN in my area. When I get in the mood to see 360° of cement we would choose BAGUIO, where they haven't cut down all the trees, YET.
Coffee Bean scene : You were at the Serendra shopping center. There are condos located near the shops. Market Market is across Serendra. SM Aura mall is nearby.

If you want amenities right outside your doorstep, BGC is the key. While it is a modern city, with luxurious ambience it still lacks the Filipino character like what we used to see in the provinces. The tradional culture. People are very modern here. If you are that type of person, BGC is best for you, but if you have an old soul, country guy, the provinces are good choices.
I agree with your way of thinking. I left the Philippines 40 years ago to immigrate to California. I've been back only once 10 years ago. I was impressed by how much things change but I enjoyed it more in the province when I went to Tagaytay with my relatives. I enjoy nature more than the modern buildings.
I just got back from the Philippines! I miss it already! 😅 For me the best way to learn about Filipino culture is to live in the provinces or smaller cities and experience how they live without all the convenience of living in places like BGC. BGC is great for those who want convenience and have the money to spend because it is very expensive. I lived there for a year and felt like I never left the US haha. BGC definitely felt more judgmental in terms of how people dress. Back in NYC, I don't care how I dress but in BGC, I felt like there was a need to look more presentable? But when I go to Cebu, Bacolod, Capiz or Iloilo, I dress in whatever I want with no problem lol. Ain't nobody judging even if my clothes have holes!
Been there a couple times. Filipino markets and caranderias are a short walk away. Get a little exercise and be in the middle of it with locals, low prices as well anytime you want. Live in the bubble of the infrastructure of the west and enjoy both. Everything in walking distance. Also good public transportation to other places in Manila or Makati.
Even though I'm Filipino, I prepared a Province life with a beautiful nature. It's more relaxing and refreshing.🤩👍

BGC is Filipino. The warm people who work and live there makes BGC unique and makes foreigners comfortable to live there. Authentic Filipino experience does not only mean living in poverty.
I didn’t say a single word about poverty. You’re saying that. I’m saying in BGC I’m surrounded by American stores instead of carinderias, street barbecue, karaoke, fiestas, and the close communities in the barangays that I’ve experienced outside of BGC. If an American visits the Philippines for a week and never leaves BGC, they didn’t experience the Philippines in my opinion.

I know because I travel with my boss and kids. I explored in Hollywood, be around with luxury fancy people. I looked at them they are very lucky of what they have. But I don’t think they experience of what I grow up as a hard working farmers leaving in the nature that you can make your own food, and cooked your food d from the garden and go fishing and get your own free seafood.
I was lucky enough to see how they’re luxury lifestyle. But I still love were I experience is being in the province lifestyle. Stress free for me lol.

Jonathan-#2 is spot on and I'm surprised you got "a lot of hate" for it =? True, however: The "Filipino"-ness in BGC is the Pinoys themselves IN BGC. There's the public art, too, done by Filipino artists. As Filipinos ourselves who do not live in the BGC area, it's the cleanliness, discipline and safety by and of those who work or live there that BGC excels in. And the master planning of BGC-a balance of concrete and greens-that stakeholders strive to maintain. (BGC still is on government property after all.)

My family and I just left BGC. We stayed there for 21 days (Airbnb). My daughter loves it there!

you're right. Living in the provinces is way better if you want a more peaceful and organic way of living. More foreigners prefer to retire here because they can own a farm without hurting their savings. Thanks for the good thoughts for Filipinos, take care and enjoy more of our country.
So how does a big city or downtown should look like? A downtown area or financial district like BGC is obviously the most developed area in the country, just like any other big cities in the world and not meant to look like rural place. BGC is modern and highly urbanized because it is one of the financial districts in the PH. The PH also was a former colony of the US, that is why there are many western influences in the PH in terms of restaurants, language, music, structures, etc. If you like a rural place, then go to the province. An urban area is not meant to look like a rural place, urban is entirely different from rural. If one country looks like an entire rural area then that country is not progressive at all and probably stuck in the ancient times.

Jonathan, I hope BGC Denny's isn't anything like the Denny's we have here Columbia, SC. Ours are crawling with "Palmetto bugs", has sticky floors, and coffee mugs that have lipstick stains permanently etched on it. BTW, that coffee is pretty pricey!
I think you made a wise choice choosing a province as your home base. Although I grew up in Metro Manila, I would stay keep one foot in Quezon City (for VA clinic purposes) and another in the province when I retire.

If you find a quiet place in the provinces like Caimiguin and Bohol, you can find a spot of paradise until you get a close neigbour. The provinces takes a hell of a lot of adapting to and in the end the foreigner eventually goes back home.
BGC is a loving testament of how Filipinos can be great and be competitive as a global player, let everyone recognize that BGC is a product of the Filipino ingenuity. It was designed and masterplanned by Filipino enterprises using the skills of Filipino city masterplanners and engineers NOT by any foreign enterprises. It was made by the Filipinos for the Filipinos. BGC hosts a multitude of global companies and not only American but Western Europe and Australia employing Filipino talents that are in managerial and executive positions. The very name of BGC is a testament to Filipino greatness being named after one of the Philippines greatest heroes Andres Bonifacio who led the country towards freedom from centuries long colonial oppression. and look BGC now is a platform for many Filipino graduates to have excellent careers because of the many employment opportunities of working for companies where they do not have to go outside the country and earn great income. I for one am one of them having worked as one of the managers for a big German bank in BGC. BGC is primarily for Filipinos and not foreigners.
They copied the layout of you typical downtown in a big US city. They designed out ALL the traditional Filipino culture. Go outside of BGC and experience the hustle and bustle of the traditional Philippines: markets, street food, colour and atmosphere. And Andres Bonifacio? No, BGC is a corporate money maker, unaffordable for 99% of the local population.
@@QuicknStraight how is that any different from any other high end neighborhood from non western cities in the world, from Tokyo to Bangkok to Dubai? Should those areas also be criticized for not having japanese markets or arab bazaars? Having traditional buildings and atmosphere is not the point in the minds of the builds when designing those cities, it is to showcase progress and create a modern hub for international and domestic interests, and the case is same with BGC.
@@stuka80 exactly. As if those people want the PH to be stuck in the olden times or in the "traditional way". We are in the modern era and the PH is progressive with places like BGC that is beautiful, modern and highly urbanized.
Nothing filipino about BGC.
BGC has improved in terms of allowing people to take pictures, hold cameras, or record videos. Back then, they were much stricter about it. I couldn't even draw the statues or anything in that area. The guards and security were quite paranoid, especially if they knew you were Pinoy. I remember they had a photo contest inside BGC, and the guards and traffic enforcers were so paranoid that they would check and question us every time they saw us.
Jonathan, I always enjoy your videos and your thoughts about the Philippines. You are fair how you feel about the country. And being said, I agree with you hundred percent. I feel the same way about my Country there pro and cons. No perfect place in the world. I might not living in my birth Country right now, but I’m still proud of that. Where we living right now outside the City crime are high, but the City is worse .I seen it on my own eyes. Many businesses are closing and banks are been braking windows and on in on. Is shameful that the American that I knew is so much crime. But there’s hope and still good Country to live. I hope that people be kind and loving to one another. It’s okay to disagree but use the kind words. Let’s pray for the world for peace and loving people is better place to all of us.❤😊

BGC area is a different vibe, very clean, organized, safe, & etc… I have a place there and I love it but my heart and happiness is in my home place in Iloilo city or in Bacolod where my family and lots friends lives there .

You hit the nail on the head with BGC which I would refer to as the best of the west in the east. I just moved here a month ago and have to say it is incredibly convenient though definitely this is not your destination if you are seeking a more authentic filipino experience. I decided to move here after I saw a video from the SavvyExpat about it and so far I have had no regrets.

own a 700 sqft condo in the city which seems to be very small and claustrophobic, so i went back to my folks house in the countryside and i am now living in a farm with 14 dogs
You should visit BAGUIO CITY, just 5 hours bus ride up north. It will present a tenessee-like city with the best filipino traditions and culture mixed with modern living and nature, plus the cold weather 24/7.
well that's the beauty of it all, you have the ease of choice between urban and rural living in the philippines.
If I wanted US prices, I'd live in the US or UK. If people with a huge income stay in BGC I completely understand. I have a military pension age 57.. just too many $300 to $400 condo options all over the Philippines.
