The original was a marvelous production with three great Broadway women as the three madwomen. Angela Lansbury was just spectacular. It closed very, very quickly however as it was viewed as "old-fashioned". That was the start of the Sondheim era. I was fortunate to have been in New York on business and saw it.

What other Angela performances did you see on Broadway? In the late 70, my friend Barry got to see Angela play Anna in The King and I on Broadway. (Yul Brenner wanted a 2 week vacation, and Angela was working on her voice about to do Mrs. Lovett, so she stepped into The King and I for two weeks as Anna, and the producers switched from the King-centric version to the original Anna-centric version for her.). What a performance that must have been to see, and too bad it wasn’t recorded!

Unfortunately, the sound quality on this video is such that most of the dialogue and song lyrics were totally lost. It's a shame. I would have very much enjoyed seeing this.

I saw the original. The book had problems, but not as many as this production. AND where did they get those first two songs
