- Somehow Nixxiom convinced Crendor to try Hardcore Classic World of Warcraft, despite the fact that he hasn't played the game in so long. After much debate, these two heroes of Azeroth decided to make for themselves Tauren - a shaman and a warrior - and attempt the hardcore duo run in the grassy plains of Mulgore. Will they survive to level 60? Or will our two heroes meet the fate of many Classic WoW players...?

@ Crendor It warms my heart to see so many druids. Back in OG wotlk, I felt like such an outcast of a class. Everyone wanted a Brez or innervate but no one played druids bc they had a stigma for being bad. Turns out we were just bad players back then. Now that I’m on classic, it’s really neat to see all the druids.
Really enjoyed this. Would love to see more of you guys leveling/chatting about WoW and why we're here while on the hardcore journey. It truly has reshaped the way I approach leveling and revisiting it to have fun like I used to when I played it for the first time. It's nice to step back and focus on the journey again vs worrying about endgame and rushing.
Fun fact a "hardcore" string has been found in the Warcraft client in the latest PTR patch so they might be making official hardcore servers soon :)

Couldn't agree more. The questing in classic / Wraith classic is an adventure, and when you constantly go back to big cities they'll be even more quests to send you back to previous areas that you did 3 hours ago to go check in on NPCs and that's awesome as it makes the world feel lived in

So excited for more of this!! I got an Undead Rogue to level 20 in this. The HC experience really changes the whole entire game experience, every decision you make is important!

Soooooooooooooooooooo glad I ran into this video and specifically your discussion on how the leveling experience has regressed over the years. So I'm currently playing a hardcore rogue (lv 44 on NA) when I decided to start a retail rogue from scratch using the same hardcore self found rules just to see how much has changed as I havent played retail in a decade. What I found literally made me sick to my stomach. Its not just the overly streamlined quests that deprive the hero of any challenge or even interest in the world, but its the years of watered down classes that have made the game so easy to play that any challenge I imagined would come from playing hardcore just simply never materialized. Im not saying there isnt value in retail but its pretty much summoned up by Nix's explanation of why he loves vanilla (his players impact on the world, sense of adventure etc) vs Crendor's (I like to collect mounts). Personally sad to see it, but very glad classic is here for us to enjoy the best version of the best mmo ever made.

Wait til you try a passion project vanilla+ server like Turtle WoW... that truly is the best version of WoW that I have ever played. It's everything you describe and some. Both the developers and the player base are pure passion for the game over there.

10:00 I completely agree. This weekend I tried the modern game (shadowlands) questing zones, and I was bored out of my mind. It was just pick up 2-3 quests, go to marker 20 meters away, do the thing, finish quest, repeat. I was just going from point to point rather than exploring the zone, and it absolutely killed my interest. No exploration whatsoever. And I didn't even feel like playing my class well, because why bother applying hunters mark, or serpent sting when your mob just insta die anyway.

I also think the leveling has gotten worse on live me and my friends group up and get to max level in a day just dungeon crawling then next thing you know we are doing +15s. In classic wow id make a warrior and go blacksmithing and run around getting ore to make myself gear cause that gear was so strong low level and it was balanced I could keep my professions equal with my level. Also the old quest I remember making my first human character and it was holy cow Northshire needs help then Westfall is having a uprising where is Stormwind military. Now we level so fast I cant even remember the last time I went to Stranglethorn I don't think ive ever been into southern barrens I miss spending time in the world.
Turn EXP off and spend all the time in the world you want. No one is preventing you from doing that.
I started my wow journey less than 3 months ago, and 2 months into retail. I had the exact opinion that this man from a year ago did. Nothing mattered. All the grinding in the world was pointless because it's just a couple more pixels. After my second month I jumped into classic hardcore where everything matters and I have never had more fun in my life. It's genuinely an amazing experience, especially with modern add-ons like AI voice over

I tried the Hardcore challenge and I got to level 14 with a human warrior and 10 achievements. I died to an invisible mob and have screenshot proof. It was the first time in playing for 14 years that I encountered a bugged invisible mob.
Was it under the ground, perhaps? I've seen that multiple times, along with mobs stuck inside trees in Darkshore.
Tried to use eyes of the beast on a wind serpent that was stuck under the ground in Duskwallow Marsh. I was able to tame it and when I used EotB, my game crashed and I needed to use the character stuck feature to reset my hunter. Small indy company.
is the current classic ERA in the patch before TBC prepatch? if it includes nerfed quests etc
I like how in classic you tend to actually get upgraded gear more often than current wow
Playing as a mage in current and classic really shows how badly they nerfed old gear
Especially if you are playing as a warrior or paladin
I will never understand why they thought doing that was even a good idea in the first place

the armor value is higher for the items on classic while in retail its been nerfed into the ground.
What are you talking about? There are 4 different tiers of gear for every actual tier there is in retail.

the tier's dont matter here since item tier's has always existed since classic.
blizzard made items like copper boots now only give like 5 or so armor when before it gave way more like 70 armor
especially how whenever i completed a quest the item it gave was not an upgrade.(regardless of me doing cataclysm quests the armor there used to be better)
didn't give more armor or higher stats.
blizzard nerfed older gear.
they've been doing that when they released a new expansion since cataclysm.

So like if molten core was a raid in retail there would be lfr obsidian edged blade, normal obsidian edged blade, heroic obsidian edged blade and mythic obsidian edged blade. There is 4x the amount of gear in retail and you get like 5 or 6 upgrades a week if you play casually. You can literally go months in classic and not get an upgrade. You should play the games before you comment.

The issue with retail live leveling is that it's too quick, after 2-3 quests you've out leveled the area. You don't get the time to explore or feel comfortable in an area. This leads to the theme park feel where everyone is whizzing around, you don't encounter the same players more than once.
I agree with Nixxiom WoW was an adventure ...Hardcore has put this back in the game. Getting to60 is the real test of who is a casual .,,,
I agree questing did get worse even though it did get more diverse and complex. It doesn't feel like I'm making decisions and the phased zones are less immersive even though they are more difficult to make. It always feels like a single player game now, not an MMO.

In a HC duo you have to be grouped the entire run. And you can trade items or gold between your duo partner.
I've still found the immersion from retail heavily, it's still the adventure you make it.

The dungeon draft events don't allow you to duo. At least the recent ones haven't

You can actually duo as different races but you have to meet each other at level 1 and group up in the same zone. So some races this can be a challenge.
That's a relief. Is it allowed to make use of 3rd party warlock summon to get there to avoid picking up exploration xp on the way over?
The addon button has a rule section. It even tells you dungeon level cap. Honestly if you have any questions contact some of the more prominent HC players like Graysfordays. Or even one of the founders like Kargoz. I'm sure they'd be happy to answer anything for you considering who you are.

Quests in retail aren't as good because there is no incentive to actually read the quest to gather information. You just see a quest, accept it, go to the marker and boom.. done.

classic wow feels like a survival game especially when you play a solo warrior like me xD
There was a fundamental philosophy change at blizzard. Once upon a time, our characters were lowly individuals in a world of heroes much larger and stronger than them. Now, our characters ARE the heroes of the world, with nothing stronger than them.
I did the "Ironman" WoW challenge many years ago. Never tried Hardcore though.
I think the big difference between Classic and Retail in terms of leveling is that in classic u level all the way to max and then u start grinding for gear, meanwhile in retail, u just turn your brain off, bam max level and then u start leveling your ilvl, i wouldnt call that gearing, because youre literally getting more ITEM LEVELS, thus leveling. Sure, in classic there are ilvls aswell but u can have items with on hit effects, hit rating, expertise and all sorts of stuff on it making it a piece of gear but in retail, primary stat + 2 secondary stats and ilvl

That feeling of accomplishment when you level as a fresh noob warrior in classic, through Elwyn Forest and Westfall. Leveling up your professions (Blacksmithing and Mining) as you go, and then at level 16 you make your first green Bronze Paudrons... just epic. Sadly that feeling is long dead in today's WoW. 😥
Leveling… It’s the atmosphere in Classic where it’s the math or mechanics in modern MMO’s. They’d be better if they added atmosphere along with improved mechanics.
i don't play wow for solo get lost in the woods type adventure. I love those games, though! but I don't play wow for the same experience but better that a game like witcher 3 could give me.
realistically, I think the cat is out of the bag. green boe drops in TBC and any expansion after vanilla don't give you the dopamine that a green boe drop in vanilla gives, precisely because you've seen it before, you've had epic gear before, etc.
low level dungeons in subsequent expansions aren't the same, don't have the same air of mystery, danger, etc., because you're a seasoned vet who has seen those before.
I think the nature of the game is that nothing a new expansion offers can be the first time you've experienced something like it. Even if you're totally fresh, you probably did dungeons while leveling.
I think quests get very repetative, very quickly. A this point I'd much rather have mob exp increases so that mob grinding would be as fast as questing is now. I'd much rather just grind mobs and choose where the best mobs are for my class and level if it were competative.

I agree that leveling in classic feels like something special even gray items can just make ur endorphins go wild but I dont know if leveling has regressed or wow has evolved to be more about endgame content like raids, dungeons and pvp, while in classic i would argue endgame content is lacking, i mean some classes are literally just standing still and pressing one button the entire time not exactly the most entertaining thing to do if u ask me. and also imagine being new to wow and all ur friends are max and u had to play 150 hours before u could play with them. and if they make this epic world where it takes 100 hours to level to max every expansion like in classic i think it would be a huge L considering the focus on endgame content. but even so i thought questing in dragonflight was actually really enjoyable. i think the first time i did all the quests took me maybe 6 hours and u can even level up to 70 in like 1 hour with professions which i think is cool because the end game is where u wanna be at anyways.
Nixxiom hit the nail on the head about leveling. Getting a 6 slot bag in Classic Era is 100x more exciting than getting a 4 piece from Mythic Vault of the Incarnates or anything else in retail.

Feels like there's a lot of power discrepancy when leveling. Talents are cool but that's kind of it. Still feel like dungeon spamming is the best way to level too, which is getting kind of boring. Game also feels kind of not real when leveling as things just level with you, and nothing is ever a threat either.

For me it is not so much that quests are better or worse. In retail I have a scripted journey and all the mobs are the same level as me. In classic I get to pick and choose where I go, how I go about it & how big of a challenge I want to take on. The reason the levelling process is boring is that normally it is either a race with everyone else where you skip most of the content at the start of an xpac or everyone else is already max level and you have no one to play with. The reset on death ensures a healthy lower level population and as you level up there are fewer & fewer people so you start to know a higher percent of the community. You don't just run past Jimmy from Boulderfist and never see him again. It's like .. oh that's that Jimmy the keyboard turner.

I agree completely with Nixxiom on the leveling in Wow Class vs Retail.
I came back to Wow after years of being unsubbed and played Classic for a few weeks before trying to play retail. I didn't make it past the starter zone in retail before I was thoroughly disappointed. It felt fake and pandering. All this slickly polished experience was done in the extremely blatant vein to make everything overly conventional and simple to the point where it didn't even feel like an RPG. I logged off retail and deleted my character.
I am still happily loving Classic and have four characters. The highest is currently lvl 30.
I don't really understand classic hardcore, because it just sounds like you're playing normally, except if you die you have wasted your time.
EDIT: To clarify something, I love leveling in wow classic/vanilla, I have always enjoyed the f out of it, and is my favorite part of the game. But like, dying at level 24 or whatever, in hardcore just prevents me from leveling in later zones, so I would have redo the zones I just went through. Yea, I enjoy those zones, but come on.
So do we know how blizz is going to handle the hardcore servers? Are they going to have the selectable challenges from the add-on? Are they going to have a leaderboard system?

The stories and such in Classic work so well because you are not the centre of the world like in retail. You are not the 'Champion' or the 'Hero'. You are just some person starting out in a big world, one of many, not the centre of the universe.
Imo, I just want classes to be useful instead doing the most dmg. Not it’s all about which class pumps out the most DPS with a pally/shamy for a buff and that’s it, really.

Old leveling is just too slow for my tastes. I get bored infinitely before I could ever hit 60. New leveling is still boring, but to me, the only way I would enjoy classic leveling would be if the pace requires like, 16 hours /played to do. Imo

Leveling in retail is and has to be a chore. The game is completely centered around end game. Making leveling take a long time like Classic would be a colossal failure. Leveling literally takes like 12 hours at most on retail right now and people will still pay money to skip it. The only change I want to see is for them to bring back the ability to queue into old dungeons. Why they removed that and force you into BFA of all expacks is beyond me because it sucks.

I gotta say, I tried one-and-done hardcore mode and after the 5th time I failed to make it to 60, it burned me out. The problem with hardcore mode is that for the amount of time it takes to get a character 60, you just can't take any chances at all, ever, until you are ready to suicide the toon at 60. And not being able to take chances means extremely boring leveling, not being able to run with parties or group-up (particularly with rogues or pallies)... basically not being able to do anything that is actually fun.
on 🐢 you're allowed to group up with other players as long as they are within 5 levels.
