With fish, I always thought it was because a predator looking up at them below would see their underside against a brighter background because of the sun and it would be a dark background if they looked from above. Some planes and helicopters are painted that way, green camo on top and light grey or blue on the bottom.
I love sardines, especially when they’ve been cooked in a way that allows for the bones to be eaten (which is always the case with the canned variety). Are you an in-water purist, like me, or do you go in for the ones packed in mustard, hot sauce, etc.?
