basically all kinds of religion from various academic disciplines, such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology.. stuff like that :) It's more like studying the superficial content and practice of religion rather than in depth study of texts and dogma etc.

And have a writing system and alphabet that hasn't changed since so long so one can read it in the present must be amazing! Of course. But my comment was about the fact hebrew letters haven't changed and can be read as is. Try that with a 500 years old text full of long Ss and strange ligatures in latin alphabets.

Yup. Here in Germany, you can find the easiest difference by simply comparing a modern german bible and the luther bible. Its difficult and takes some time to get used to it. Only with the luther bible we started unifying the german language. Now imagine not 500 year but 2000 and even 2700 years. This is really amazing
That's not actually what happened.
Hebrew died out as a language long ago, but in the late 19th century Eliezer Ben-Yehuda created a reconstruction of mishnaic Hebrew as modern Hebrew, and taught the language to his son from birth as the first native Hebrew speaker for centuries.
It shouldn't be surprising that Modern Hebrew is so similar to the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls: it was constructed to be that way.
Although when it comes to lettering: in the time of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, Jews generally spoke Yiddish, which also used the Hebrew lettering system even though as a language it is closer to German.
Although really, when it comes to the lettering, here is a latin manuscript from the same period: cdn-az.allevents.in/banners/717c8bc11b25b52f6c0a5cfe0504e5e5 (the gallus papyrus)
Obviously the fact it's in latin makes if difficult to read for english-speakers, but it's not because of difficult-to-read lettering.

As a biblical (Hebrew Bible scholar), I can assure you that the Scrolls have nothing to do with Christianity. There is a lot of misleading information in 'documentaries' made by Christians. All the Jewish sects in those days observed the Torah and its regulations. No one came to create a new religion to replace the Jewish faith. They may have had different views about observance but no one came to abrogate circumcision, dietary laws (even Isaiah denounced those who ate swine flesh, pork - look it up in the Hebrew Bible), etc. As to Christianity, it is founded on a chapter in Isaiah (53), some other verses in Isaiah, a few verses in Jeremiah, etc. all taken out of context. Most of my scholarly studies were published in well known journals but I have published one online, in my own blog, and it is about the Vision of Gabriel - an important inscription written in Hebrew and dated to around the first century. There you will find more discussion about Judaism and Christianity.

The lecture was quite disingenuous to the Scribes of the schrolls, They left the Temple because they thought it had become corrupt, they created their own society which focused entirely on strict obedience to the Torah, they hid the schrolls prior to a battle with the Romans, believing after the battle they would retrieve them, and the rest is history..

With all due respect to you, my brother or sister in humanity, But The Bible is mostly corrupted. I will provide the evidence through contradictions which undoubtedly cannot come from The Divine but from the hands of man. Hence that is why Allaah (Majestic is He) says in The Qur'aan:
وَأَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَمُهَيْمِنًا عَلَيْهِ ۖ ... - 5:48
English Translation - Sahih International:
[And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it...]
Allaah (Majestic is He) says that He has revealed The Qur'aan to confirm what was before it (The Gospel) because of the main reasons that it is mostly corrupted and The Christians have gone astray by worshipping The Prophet (Jesus) who was sent as a final Messenger to The Children of Israel.
*Note: if I use any other translation except "New International Version", it is because they have hidden the contradiction - and you can check for yourself.*
Some Contradictions in The Bible:
1. How old is Ahaziah?
(2 Kings 8:26) - New International Version:
[Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother's name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.]
*Clearly in Hebrew it says: אַרְבָּעִ֨ים (’ar·bā·‘îm), which means forty.
Number - common plural
Strong's Hebrew 705: Forty.)
Now, both Hebrew and Arabic are semitic languages and the number for forty in Arabic is: أربعين (arba'ayn). Scroll down to the lexicon section and it clearly shows you the Hebrew word for forty:

2. Is everything permissible to eat or are there certain foods which are impermissible?
(Genesis 9:3) - New International Version:
[Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.]
(Leviticus 11:10) - New International Version:
[But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales--whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water--you are to regard as unclean.]
(Leviticus 11:7-8) - New International Version:
[And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.]
3. Isn't Jesus a man & God according to Christians? But God said He is not a man...
(Numbers 23:19) - New International Version:
[God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?]
(John 10:30) - New International Version:
Jesus says: [I and the Father are one."]
4. (John 10:29) - New International Version:
[My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.]
Now THIS just contradicts everything in The Bible when Jesus (according to The Bible) claims to be God.
What do you have to say about these contradictions?
Now Allaah (Majestic is He) challenges ANYBODY to produce a surah (chapter) like one in The Holy Qur'aan, He says:
وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُم مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ - 2:23
(English Translation - Sahih International):
["And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah [chapter] the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful."]
فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَلَن تَفْعَلُوا فَاتَّقُوا النَّارَ الَّتِي وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ ۖ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَافِرِينَ - 2:24
(English Translation - Sahih International):
["But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers."]
This verse was revealed at a time where the Arabs were masters of poetry and none of them could produce the like thereof a surah (chapter) because of it's inimitable symphony and the very sounds which of which move men to tears and ecstasy. It is undoubtedly, a linguistic miracle.

THE CHRISTIANS REGARD the Bible as their Sacred Scriptures, where the words of God are written. For true Christians, the Bible is the sole basis of their faith. Muslims also regard Qur’an as their Sacred Scriptures, where the words of God are written. So, what the differences between the two books?
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES
The Bible is a library (a collection) of sixty-six (66) books. Written in a span of 1,500 years (Genesis, the first book, was written about 1447-1407 BC, and Revelation, the last book, was written about 90-95 AD). The Bible is written by more than forty (40) inspired writers.
Qur’an is a single book. It is comparable in length with the New Testament. The “standard Qur’an” was done by a single man.
Take note that if you going to read the whole Bible, you can see that it seems it was written by a single writer in particular period or time because of its unity. Remarkable for the Bible is not a single book but a collection of 66 books, written by 40 men in a span of 1,500 years. If there is a unity in Qur’an, what’s remarkable about that for it was done by a single man in a particular time or period?

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ السَّبَّاقِ، أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَىَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مَقْتَلَ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ فَإِذَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عِنْدَهُ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ إِنَّ عُمَرَ أَتَانِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْقَتْلَ قَدِ اسْتَحَرَّ يَوْمَ الْيَمَامَةِ بِقُرَّاءِ الْقُرْآنِ وَإِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَسْتَحِرَّ الْقَتْلُ بِالْقُرَّاءِ بِالْمَوَاطِنِ، فَيَذْهَبَ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ وَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَأْمُرَ بِجَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ. قُلْتُ لِعُمَرَ كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ عُمَرُ هَذَا وَاللَّهِ خَيْرٌ. فَلَمْ يَزَلْ عُمَرُ يُرَاجِعُنِي حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرِي لِذَلِكَ، وَرَأَيْتُ فِي ذَلِكَ الَّذِي رَأَى عُمَرُ. قَالَ زَيْدٌ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّكَ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ عَاقِلٌ لاَ نَتَّهِمُكَ، وَقَدْ كُنْتَ تَكْتُبُ الْوَحْىَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَتَتَبَّعِ الْقُرْآنَ فَاجْمَعْهُ فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ كَلَّفُونِي نَقْلَ جَبَلٍ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ مَا كَانَ أَثْقَلَ عَلَىَّ مِمَّا أَمَرَنِي مِنْ جَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ هُوَ وَاللَّهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُرَاجِعُنِي حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ لَهُ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ فَتَتَبَّعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ أَجْمَعُهُ مِنَ الْعُسُبِ وَاللِّخَافِ وَصُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ آخِرَ سُورَةِ التَّوْبَةِ مَعَ أَبِي خُزَيْمَةَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ لَمْ أَجِدْهَا مَعَ أَحَدٍ غَيْرَهُ {لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ} حَتَّى خَاتِمَةِ بَرَاءَةَ، فَكَانَتِ الصُّحُفُ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حَيَاتَهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ.
Let us be reminded that the “Qur’an” compiled by Zayd were not “written Qur’an.” The book “Qur’an” were not written or it does not exist during the lifetime of Muhammad. If there are “revelations” of Muhammad that were put in writing during his lifetime, very few, a small fraction. Great numbers were found in “men’s breast” or “memorized” only in their hearts by Muhammad’s companions and followers. As a proof, when Abu Bakr commanded Umar to tell Zayd the task of compiling the “Qur’an”, he replied “How would you do something that the Prophet of Allah did not do?”
When Abu Bakr said to Zayd that “We do not doubt that you are a wise young man. You used to write down the revelation for the Prophet of Allah. So trace the Qur’an and compile it.” Zayd answered, “By Allah, if they had chosen me to move the mountain from its place, it would have been easier than compiling the Qur’an…How would you do something the Prophet of Allah did not do?” Take note that if Zayd have been written all or many of the “revelations” recited by Muhammad during the latter’s lifetime, he would not say such words, “if they had chosen me to move the mountain from its place, it would have been easier than compiling the Qur’an.” Zayd again said, “How would you do something the Prophet of Allah did not do?” This only proves that “Qur’an was not written and compiled during the lifetime of Muhammad.” The book called "Qur'an" does not exist during the lifetime of Muhammad. The Qur’an was put in writing after Muhammad’s death by a young man commissioned by Abu Bakr, named Zayd Ibn Thabit.

Why did Abu Bakr commissioned Zayd to make the book that is now called Qur’an? During the Battle of Yamama many Muslims were killed. Abu Bakr said, “‘On the day of Yamama, Umar came to me and said that the reciters of the Qur’an were killed. He was afraid that others might be killed elsewhere. This indicates the loss of much of the Qur’an.” This proves (1) many “revelations” recited to them by Muhammad were not put in writing during his lifetime but only memorized by his followers, and (2) and not all recited by Muhammad were included in the book made by Zayd (thus refuting the alleged “perfect preservation" of Muhammad’s revelations or of Qur’an).
Although the Lord Jesus Christ did not wrote any book in the Bible, however, the writers of the New Testament books were apostles and ministers of the Gospel, like Apostle John, Apostle Paul and Apostle Peter. Was Zayd Ibn Thabit “an apostle of Allah”? Apostle Paul said, “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.” (II Corinthians 5:20, NKJV) Can Zayd Ibn Thabit say the same for Muhammad?
Therefore, if the books of the Bible were written by the prophets and the apostles themselves, the Qur’an was not written by the prophet of Islam, not written by Muhammad himself, but only by a young man commissioned by Abu Bakr when Muhammad was already dead. So, the books of the Bible claimed “divine inspiration” because the writers of the book were the divine prophets and apostles themselves. How about Qur’an? How can it claim “divine inspiration” if it is not written by Muhammad himself but by a young man commissioned by Abu Bakr? Was Zayd himself an inspired prophet or apostle of Allah?
Truly, there are great differences between the Bible and Qur’an. The basis of the Bible’s divine inspiration is greater than the basis (if they have) of the Qur’an’s divine inspiration.
There are still many great differences between the Qur’an and the Bible, but these are enough for now, and these are enough to show that the Bible rises over and above the Qur'an.

The Qur'aan was not compiled as a WHOLE book at the time of The Prophet ﷺ - BUT it was written down immediately whenever he used to get revelation and it was written on many different materials such as: wood, parchment, stone and even bones. It was compiled as ONE book after the death of Muhammad ﷺ when Caliph Abu Bakr was leader.

Now, The Prophet ﷺ was illiterate, he could not read or write, so he commanded his Companions to memorize it and to write it down.
