"Dwarfs" vs. "dwarves" - "Dwarfs" is technically the correct term for multiple Real World little people, but "dwarves" is the generally accepted plural form for mythical little people, because Tolkein (being Tolkein) decided "dwarves" made more etymological sense. Seriously. 😂

I believe he preferred "dwarrows", but went for "dwarves" for legibility. I think he also wanted to distinguish his fantasy dwarves from real world dwarfs. Snow White's little men could really be either, and being a pre-Tolkien fairy tale, could even be fantasy dwarfs.

Well he was an Oxford Fellow and a Professor of Anglo-Saxon so if anyone should know it would be him. There is the story about how he got his new students to speak to him, and then identified every bit of their accents and their origins, just to demonstrate that when he spoke to them in Anglo-Saxon they could believe his language and pronunciation.

I always enjoyed mirror mirror because everyone seemed to be having fun. I was always under the impression that they were handed a horrid script and everyone involved just went “this script? Are you sure? F**k it, at least we’ll have fun with it” and proceeded to go completely over the top with everything. There are scenes where you can see the actors struggling not to break.
It’s not good, but it’s infinitely more fun than the dour, joyless Snow White and the huntsman that came out the same year.

That makes sense tbh, Snow honestly felt like a side character femme fatale written to just validate all the men around her. I mean she goes around either falling in love with the first guy she meets or changing everything about herself to fit in with a group of men. And she has zero thoughts and feelings of her own. Not even so much of a reaction to anything she’s experiencing or anything happening to her. The only time she seems to smile is when she pleases some guy, it’s a little weird considering she’s the main character.
Plus the end of that fight scene was sus. It felt like the writers going “don’t worry guys, the prince may have (barely) lost this fight because the plot demands it, but he has already won the heart of the princess without even trying! Look, she’s making doe eyes and calling him cute! Isn’t that great?”

My impression of the dialogue is that it's all first draft lines. "You're a jerk" and "if you and your friends stop robbing them" are just straightforward descriptions of what the characters are feeling. Like if you took a swordfight scene from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie and removed all the jokes and personality while still having them plainly state their intentions, this is what you'd get.

Funny story about keeping one's eyes open when around swords...
The actor Günter Meisner was blind as a bat without his glasses. He played Adolf Hitler in the 1983 miniseries The Winds of War. Many scenes were filmed on location in Germany. Well, when you are an American crew filming in Europe and need extras, hitting up US military bases is something of a tradition. My dad, was stationed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (I was a toddler) working as a public affairs liaison for the USAF. He was tapped to play an SS officer, and was the shortest (5'10") one in line. He was also the darkest (brown hair and hazel eyes) in the line of 6'+ blond US Army guys. However they taught him to do the saber salute for the scene were Hitler arrives at The Eagle's Nest. Günter Meisner missed his mark, because he, as I mentioned, is blind without his glasses. My dad did the saber salute and damn near took off Meisner's hand (because they gave my dad a real sword).
So, I agree, keeping eyes open is important.
Also, my dad "kept" the SS Officer's gloves he was supposed to turn back in. So, there is a bit if film history in my dad's house.

maybe a bit technical, but it looks like this production had a seasoned stunt coordinator and fight choreographer, but a first-time second unit director (and about 12 people credited as second or third assistant directors). makes sense that the sword work was passible, but the dialog and character relationships were meh at best. Add to that 12 executive producers, three producers, and an associate producer, and I wonder if there wasn't a lot of "just who is in charge here" going on around that set.

Lovely analysis! And I mostly agree, however, I differ in that I actually genuinely do enjoy this movie, and rewatch it every so often, but I like it not because the characters are particularly likable, but because a) its so silly and cheesy, it just makes for a fun watch
    b) I just really enjoy the fun, over the top costume design in it, the costume designer went so hard with some of the fits!
And finally c) I just really have a personal interest and enjoyment in seeing and reading all sorts of different interpretations of fairy tales! I know some people think they're over played/over done and its not ENOUGH if its not a SUPER ORIGINAL INTERPRETATION, but I think its just really fun to see that these old classic tales still hold enough value to us as a society for us to continue to reinvent them over and over, hundreds of years later 🥰

I think the biggest issue with the fight for me is that it almost feels too playful on the Prince's end. Its been a while since I saw the Zoro fight but from what I remember you at least got the implication that if the guy didn't take his foe seriously he would get badly hurt while here I never got the impression that even if this was a serious fight the prince would get hurt. It felt more like an older sibling playing with a younger sibling rather than two romantic leads interacting. The fact that Snow White wins seemingly more due to luck regarding positioning and having a good throwing arm rather than skill or careful maneuvering does not help matters.

I fully agree with everything you said. Julia Roberts and the side characters are so good, but bland Snow White, unlikable Prince, and lack of chemistry between them keep this movie from being really good. That and the amount of scenes shot in the snow while people are wearing thin blouses, nothing but underwear, or off-the-shoulder ball gowns without ever looking cold. Some of it makes sense, they are not voluntarily in their undergarments, but a lot seems to be what they picked to wear on a cold winter day and I'm just freezing on my couch watching them.
