I have almost this exact saw that was given to me and the fuel line has rotted away... This was the perfect vid to show me how to replace it. THANKS!
Thanks for the video. Picked up a similar Craftsman saw at an auction. Fuel line fell out when I pulled the starter rope. Watched your video, put in a new fuel line and it runs like a top!
Thanks for the information, i got one of these for 3 bucks at a garage sale, fuel lines were rotted, but the engine had good compression, if it wasnt for youre video it would be in my trashcan
Thanks for the video, I got mine for 10 bucks on craigslist, watched your video and spent a hour or so taking it apart and taking pics as I went for a reference. Then about 6 bucks at Rural King for a fuel filter a new plug and some fuel line and Im in the money. Thanks agian!!
i love to see these old motors get fixed and cleaned up
nice, ive got plenty more vids up than this one if thats what you like seeing lol
No primer bubble on this type saw and the carb has been totally apart so no gas .... and it starts 1st pull. Very good work.
Good video. Used as a resource to get my recently acquired Craftsman 18" saw going. It sat for at least 6 years, and was apparently put up with fuel in it.
I've done a few 2 and 4 cycle carb rebuilds. This one, by far was the worst. The brass fuel inlet tube was completely clogged. Carb cleaner wasn't budging; had to make a small loop with very thin copper wire and dig the green crud out. Replaced the fuel tubing, fuel filter and air filter. The original air filter disintegrated when I pulled it out.
My chainsaw has no prime bubble, so it took about 15 pulls to get it primed and firing. After that, it starts on the first pull and runs smooth and reliable.
I would like to add that it's important to verify your chain has oil, and that it is properly tightened before starting. Mine had no oil, and the chain was a little bit loose, both of which are recipes for disaster.
Great video , nice job thanks for the tips I have the same exact saw as your dad mine is from 12/84 .
i have 2 craftsman’s just like it, probably the same year too! and a poulan that’s identical but green of course😏. the poulan was a box of parts i worked on and put together, thanks for the video for it running good and cutting!
Whats the year on this model I gotta a 358.355141
Thanks! This is great. I watched it several time, but there are gaps, that you may take for granted. Like, re-threading the fuel line through the trigger.
+Mike O perhaps there is. Problem is if I show everything a 12 minute video jumps to an hour long vid. Something which EVERYONE would complain about unfortunately. I've tried it before
Hank, I agree. I will just be careful to see that fuel line path, when I remove the old. Thanks to your You-Tube, I am make good progress with this saw. Mike O
awesome man, yea this saw is still getting used my dad uses it for smaller stuff every now and again, its a good saw well worth keeping around
I wish they still made that good old fuel line it lasted way longer than the newer stuff my mcculloch 310 still has its original fuel line from the early 80s its black rubber and still soft and flexible
Thanks for the video, I have my dads old Craftsman saw just like that one this thing is has got to be at least 35 years old he bought it new and took very good care of it in fact he was a small engine repair guy like yourself. The saw had not been run for about 10 years so I decided to put fresh gas in it and fire it up. WRONG!
It wouldn't start so I got looking and the fuel line had completely fallen apart I need a new fuel line and a filter and we will bee good to go.
Just did the same! I replaced the fuel line and filter, cleaned out the gas tank, changed the plug and have a new chain coming. Thing runs like it's brand new now.
Had a very similar Craftsman on the bench 6 weeks ago. Didn’t even have to clean the carb. Filter was disintegrated . Customer said he would take of that. Ran like a champ. It was made by Poulan. Damn near all parts are NLA, including the carb. And if you source one, it’s more than the saw is worth.Good fix.
They are cool little saws man for sure
Thanks so much I got the same one doing it tonight.
Thank you for your video, really helpfull!!
Love the channel man keep it up God Bless
Just ran into your channel, subbed, I have that same saw, guess a carb overhaul is worth a try.
Getting on Facebook trying to buy some $15 chainsaws that don't work.
Imyouve inspired me to make my own chainsaw repair video
i have one exactly like it i got from a development by a garbage can and i did some carb tuning and now it runs like a top
Thank you ! I'm another one to benefit the fuel line change tutorial, the thing works well, now dealing with oil for the chain ... !
Would have been a good idea to check the carburetor adjustment I like to see how you do the high speed and low speed adjustment
Can't wait to get mine running
Just got mine running. Very good video with useful info. Thanks 👌👍👍
I just picked this model up for a few dollars, cleaned it up and it should be running well in a day or two. Amazing that sheeple dont maintain their tools properly or dont take the time to LEARN on how maintenance is performed. More dollars in my pocket!
Crap... I just paid $60.00, but mine was running.
You still got a good deal . New stuff is mostly plastic and has a disposable engine assembly.
Same saw. Cleaned carb. It runs. Idles up good. Only runs at high idle. Gas spittin up out the top of the carb
matthew plute I have the same issue with mine spitting gas out the carb, we’re you able to fix it?
I have the same saw haven't heard it run yet pulled it out of a old building it still has the Craftsman letters on the blade also the original blade cover
I have one exactly like that one. Where can I get the carburetor for that saw? Can you assist me with part number for the carburetor for that saw?
www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/530-035161/0071/358.html?modelNumber=358355161&categoryName=Chainsaw,%20Gas&brandName=CRAFTSMAN
This is for everyone wanting a link to the carb kit. It's on Sears Parts Direct. Just look up your model number and it will show every part still available.
Good video, doing the same thing right now. Thanks.
I have a similar model with the failure to start problem. Did you need to adjust the carb screws and if so how far out did you turn them? Thanks for the video.
I picked up one of these for free a couple years ago. Mine has the 18" bar. It starts up and stalls our so I think I need to clean the carb
I have the Poulan version of this thing and I can't get it started unless I disconnect the fuel line at the carb. any tricks to start? full choke and then minimize or the other way around? choke off and go towards choke on?
So I noticed your little circular sticker isn't legible anymore, but mine says "556 Y" at the bottom. Could be the model? I have the exact same saw (thanks for the carb dismantle btw ha.)
But the issue I have sounds exactly the same as your pops. But when I have it opened all the way up, and sorry if pump the trigger - it looks like it's just SPRAYING fuel.. I hated that it might be just being flooded? Then later as the fuel evaporates, it is easy to start again.. is there a way to adjust the fuel intake when pulling the trigger?
Do you know where to get a replacement carb at? For this same model? Do you think it was the carb or the fuel line?
a good trick with the spring is put a small amount of grease on the spring and it will hold still until you put the needle and pin asmbley on.
I used super glue and glued it to the carb it won’t go anywhere😂
What type of carb is on it? I have the exact same one. I'd like to replace the carb
There is another problem that my chain saw like that has. It is when I put oil in the reservoir that lubricates the blade it leaks out. What do you think is the problem? Do you think it needs a seal or a gasket of some sort? If so can you demonstrate how to replace it?
Hank, Actually, my saw is a 358.355162, but seems just like the one in your video. While removing the old fuel line, I discovered it is in two parts. A tiny fitting at the back of the handle, joins the two fuel line sections. It seem like the fitting will not pass through the handle, and holds the fuel line from more of it moving into the handle, from the tank side. Is this to prevent the fuel line from moving toward the trigger when being operated? Does the fuel line section on the trigger side have to be without slack, for the trigger to function properly? Thanks, Mike O
Does anyone know what parts to replace the oil system for this exact chainsaw, trying to rebuild one atm.
I have virtually the same saw it starts runs cuts good but I can't keep it running at idle. I changed the fuel line, cleaned the air filter spark arrestor is clean. I have tried adjusting the idle screw and the throttle adjustment tell me what you would do to figure this out Thanks
I have one just like that only today i start it up and found out that the muffin is missing do you think that i can find a muffler somewhere for this model i have not tried Sears yet, only it's a very good chainsaw they sure don't make them like that anymore, anyway maybe that muffler maybe somewhere in my shed must have came off from the vibration from the engine only no bolt is broken off in the hole from the muffler and it's only one bolt that's hold the muffin on if i find another muffler next time i will used lock nuts glue from now on
Good job, I've always liked the older craftsmen saws, is that early to mid 80's?
I believe so. Mine looks identical and is 1985. My model number starts with 356 instead of 358. It is a great saw. Only problem I had was the gas line and air filter got shot. It is 37 years old now.
Ironic this came up in my feed :) I actually just got the same one myself from my uncle. It's got a 14 inch bar on it. just got mine going myself:)
What model # is on it thanks for the info
the model # is 358.355140
thanks man I knew it was a poulan too lol
no problem, enjoyed the video sir
quick question, out of curiosity, what part of the country do you live in?
Have 1994 craftsman model 358.356230.
Fuel line needs replacing but what does the tiny spring on the fuel line attach to?
Where would you by parts for the carb? Is this carb still be made and use in other chainsaws?
What gasket can i use on carburator and where can i find it?
Does anyone know if gasket maker will work in place of the cylinder gasket?
im hoping someone see this. i have the exact same replica in a poulan pro pp180. took the fuel line and filter and replaced them. only now, there is no gas getting to carb. i believe in the gas tank, the duckbill rubber piece fell out. is that what the problem is? any help would be greatly appreciated
I have the same or close to chainsaw......my tank just cracked on the bottom. I am looking for a repacement right now....or find someway to fix said crack.
Love the saw.....I have dropped many a tree over the years w\it. [mainly used to de-branch]
I am looking /searching for the carburator if you can help me with this problem l have the same machine.
Walboo k10-wat or k20-wat
1st pull....bravo!
thats a cool saw I just got new hual I got a showblower an lawnmower and a gas presher washer I will be posting a vid on them tomarow
very nice, sounds like some money to be made
too bad you didn't get a 3rd grade spelling education with it...
Working on my chainsaw now my hands are tired what should be the filter looks like table saw dust
We just found my grandfathers saw which is identical to this. Do you know the year by chance?
Where did you get this fuel line?
I just did this today on a similar Craftsman branded chainsaw. The fuel line broke apart in my hands. -But why at the end of your video did you have the fuel line running outside the upper handle area?- I watched after disassembling my unit and one funny thing is that the carb needle goes to the fuel inlet (i.e the hose from the tank). I am used to the needle going to the piston. Live and learn. Thanks for the vid. (oops.. I just watched the end of your video. Disregard above question.)
Love from Chicago...
I don’t remember. It may have popped out. It runs down inside the handle. Funky design.
Do you remember the hose size? [2x3.5mm] [2.5x5mm] [3x5mm] [3x6mm] I ask because I used some old reclaimed clear hose, and it works fine, but I want to replace with life-guaranteed silicone hose and I don't know the size. I still have a small bit I clipped off the end, but I was hoping you knew. Thanks.
Love from Chicago... (when I smell like petrol I working)
I just purchased this same saw at a yard sale on the weekend. I've tried to find the manual for this particular unit on line, but can't find it. Do you have a link that will take me to the exact saw. Also, I will need a new chain. Does Oregon make a chain for this Craftsman? Trying to figure out who the manufacturer is for Craftsman? Thanks for sharing this tune up video. I now need to follow suit. Cheers!
Yes, Oregon S56 for my Crafstman 16 inch ....
S52 for this 14 inch saw
mine still has the starting instructions on it from the factory
what model is this
I have the same saw and it's missing 3 screws that hold the front of the case together. The screws are supposed to go in front of the pull cord casing .I tried measuring them and the best I can come up with is that their 3/16 to 1/4 inch wide and at least 1 and 1/4 inches long. Can you tell me the proper size please.Thank you for your help, and your video.Dennis T.
p.s. ialso need an air filter for it.Thanks again for any help-Dennis T
I just get one of these how can I get it to start ? the old man I get it from did start it rigth away
Thanks for the video ! I have the same chain saw , fuel line and air filter crumbled what size is the fuel line Id and od size ?
Offhand I dont know, I have bought bulk fuel line that comes with all the sizes I need and just match them up as needed.
Is there a good way to prime the carb when replacing the fuel like? With these not having a primer bulb I'm curious
Yes.
Get a spray bottle and mist a small amount of fuel into the carb, pull the cord. It will run for short bursts on this fuel vapor. The the increased rpm from the short runs on the fuel you are manually providing increases vacuum (venture effect) which will pull fuel out of the tank, through the line and into the carb. If the line going to the carb clear, you can see when it primes, and is very visible with the cover of in this saw.
This trick works with all small engines with no fuel pump.
I actually did this today, on a saw very similar to this that had not run about 20 years!
@@williamkillingsworth2619 thanks for the information it helped. I used a eye dropper filled up the line and a drop of two in carburetor. Thanks again 👍
do you know where I can get a replacement carb for this or the rebuild kit? I cannot find it for the life of me.
Walbro kit # K10-WAT or K20-WAT
I have the poulan iteration of this saw and it has 2 holes in the gas tank ??!! I don't see this in your video, do you know why there is a second hole?? After replacing the fuel line and filling the tank , any back and forth motion with the saw and the gas just runs out the bottom of the saw , apparently from this second hole !!
Question. How is this carb tuned? I have the same chainsaw (from my late father) and I can’t get it right. Either flooding or bogging down. Thanks
Off hand the standard is tune the low side first, from teh factory the default setting may be 1-2 turns out, same for the high side, but have to tune low end first
@@hanksgarage_ Thank you! I'll give that a shot.
Good Job..I just bought 2 of them today $15 for the both
Very nice these are cool little saws
are you interested in selling one even if I got a fixed one mine got stolen if you're interested text me back if you still got one or two
I'm trying to do the same
New to all this. What can I use to replace the filter?
Pull it out by the fuel line with a small hooked pick or something similar. Then remove and replace.
On the craftsman chainsaw you redid for your dad what is the fuel mixture you used?
Kevin Teekel, I think it’s 32:1
I believe they are 40:1 but 32:1 would be fine just a tiny bit harder to start and will foul the plut a tiny bit sooner but they are cheap.
I have the same saw was wondering if you knew the cc on it?
Just put it down! Girls should not handle tools like this.
Oh, and I like Gulden's mustard on my sandwich
I have an old craftsman model 358.357181 chainsaw that was given to me and the fuel line needs to be replace and also the filter. My problem is that there's no wire for the spark plug and need to see where's needs to be connected or if there a piece missing that the wire is connected. Need help on that.
Should be a coil that a wire will come out of that will attach to the plug
Where is the spark plug located? Is this 40 : 1 fuel ratio?
Can you show me how to replace the spark plug for this same saw?
its like one i got in to fix cas line mine is a 358.35514
What is the fuel ration on this chainsaw? And what size is the engine in cc's ?
They're usually 50:1 but if you're not sure, 40:1 is a safe bet. If it's too smoky, lean out the ratio to 45:1 and go from there
Liked the video but it was missing some very basic information for us first timers. It would be nice to give us the length & diameter of the proper fuel line and show us how to route it. Would also have been nice to know the starting directions (used to primer bulbs) since this old model doesn't have a primer bulb. I have the 358.355160 that looks identical. Maybe information on the gas / oil mixture while you were finishing up ... Thanks I enjoyed and hope mine cranks up like yours when I'm finished
I don’t tailor my videos that way. Never have. It’s impossible to get everything in like you were asking. Just too many things. The vast majority of people who watch my videos are not first timers and have a rudimentary understanding of the basics like you’ve asked about. Best advice is to keep watching videos and doing things yourself and the simple stuff will fall in place.
Oil mix is 40:1
I recommend the non ethanol pump gas ⛽ from SUNOCO
I have a similar one mine has no muffler and it’s from 1979 and is loud
Have one just like it. But it runs good until it gets hot, shuts down and will not start until its cool again. Any ideas?
Check the exhaust spark arrest screen or may be the cylinder head gasket
It's gotta be a better working saw than those small Poulans etc . Seems to run strong !!
OMG lol I know this is an old comment but I have a Poulan that was given to me, and I have the same saw her working in in the video... The former is living behind my spare tires as a spider playground. It sucks deeyick.
Tony the tiger would say Grrrrrrrreeeeaaaatt video. I agree!
Do you know what carberator that is? My dad has one and I asked him the other day, "why don't you just get rid of this it hasn't ran in 10 years?" He told me that his mom got it for him about 25 years ago and it was the first tree me and him cut up together. I want to get it running again. Everything is there minus the fuel lines all rotted away and part of the muffler. I figured I need a rebuild kit air filter and part of the muffler. Hard to find parts though.
Unfortunately I had the same issue. Parts weren’t available. Honestly his best bet would be to restore it cosmetically and use it as a display piece...
Yea thats pretty much what it is I was going to just take it and try to get it running again. I'll still tinker with it some i mean it's a walbro carb I know that much so should still be able to find something on it.
Where where are the carburetor settings for the Jets
My father in law gave me his never used. For 27 years it sat. Same model. Fuel line had to be replaced did that. Original air filter was spongy and not useable. Took it out fired right up. Cant find air filter. What can I use to replace it?
+Christian Santos you can cut up an air filter for a more current model size to fit. Go have a look at sears or any lawn and garden store and they should be able to set you up.
Ace generally has filter material to cut to size. Most sponges can work too.
Any idea what the stock bar size is on it?
I think it was 14"
Hi, I am working on the exact same saw, rerouting the gas line through the handle. When I separated the handle the two springs, one that was on the trigger and the one that was on the safety lever on top of the handle fell off their locations and I cant see how they go back correctly. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm having the same problem, same saw
After watching the video again, my saw handle screw from the side not the top
My handle separates from the side as well. Got it back together and it runs very well. Manual didn't help at all on springs routing.
Took my grandpas apart this evening..grabbing a fuel filter to shape and fuel line In the morning.I have no doubt whatsoever it will run strong with a good cleaning.
If it won’t start, try starting it with the bar&chain taken off!worked for me!
really useful that way...
Anybody know where to find a carb or carb rebuild kit for one of these? Thanks
Quentin Karamitsos Ebay
Another guy started walboro k10-wat or k20-wat. Walboro is a great carb that is far better than the Chinese knock off 's. Amazon or Ebay
👍
what is the mix ratio for this chainsaw?
thick 16:1
K i have a question i have the same saw and i went and cleand the carbrator its very clean but when i got to cut sidewaz with it it bogs out what am i doing rong
i have the same problem did you fix yours?
Same problem here
@@brianwilson3076 my guess is the hose in the tank is too long and not allowing the filter/pickup to fall to the lowest point by gravity. Learned this from flying model planes. Got to get the line just the right length for the weighted filter to let gravity take it where the fuel is.
Or you can buy true fuel pre mixed gas
I'm one looks almost the same with your
With no primer bulb how does gas get pulled into carb thru fuel line?
the suction from the movement of the piston pulling through the carburetor to put it in simple terms
Anyone know what diameter fuel line it is?
If its a model # 358.355161, which is what mine is and it looks identical to the one in the video but mine is a 16" blade, the line is 1/8 inside diameter. Also, just in case it takes a champion CJ-8 spark plug. I got the line a new filter for the tank and the plug at Rural King all for like 6 bucks. Good luck, just remember to make sure the choke tab is set into the choke on the carb. It took me a hour to realize that's why mine wouldn't start. Fixed that and it fired right up
Oh cool i cant get mine to start it only starts like 8 seconds and i have to keep pressing the gas or else it shuts off why help??!
Probably needs a carb cleaning and a rekit, new gaskets etc. should be fine after that
if you put a new piston on it it will work fine if you want to sell it I will buy it text me back
I have the same saw anybody know how to make the oiler work again
thats what im wondering.
Where/ how do you get to the spark plug on these?
@@matthewpuryear8009 Check beside the muffler. It's tucked in.
Any idea what year it is?
Early 90s
The only thing this chainsaw kick total ass it just had a primer some how on the tank or fuel line to push the fuel to the curb to intake. Then to me its best small chainsaw I would love it
Fuel?
Did I miss the spark plug
Yea I'm using one just like it and it's got issues
