1968 Porsche 912: Third Owner

  • As a product manager for Porsche, Jonas Reinke’s career has taken him from Germany to Australia to the United States in an ongoing journey that has provided plenty of company cars to test along the way. He appreciates the modern machines and their mixture of history and cutting-edge capability, but his love for early Porsches goes all the way back to his childhood slot-car setup, along with a particularly memorable day of driving spent on the Great Ocean Road in a 1972 911E.
Between the slot cars and the real cars, it all led Jonas to the one featured in today’s film: his daily-driven 1968 Porsche 912. Between the classic design, the unique experience that comes with any analog car with an engine in the back, and the ability to perform the majority of the maintenance and optimizations on his own, Jonas has found a car that he can enjoy every day of the year, on the road or in the garage.

7:02 the “click”. Anyone who’s ever been in a 911 knows that “click”, followed by the scent of the interior and then followed by the thunk of closing the door and finally the sound of the engine firing up. It’s like a symphony of Porsche.

@@freliaz I'm so sorry to hear that. Due to health issues, I also had to sell my '88 Targa Carrera several years back. I still haven't gotten over it. I remember that "click" very well. And shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear was always a hoot.

Of the six running Porsches I’ve owned, my ‘68 4-speed in this same ruby red is my favorite. Handling was out of this world - like my 944 - and I would pretend I was in a 935 even when driving slow. I took it to the Chattanooga Porsche dealer where a service manager asked me to take it to a private shop because they couldn’t justify their labor rate for such old technology.

Had the chance to see a Porsche 901, the handbuilt prototype. It looked a lot like this car, but the funny part was none of its parts were interchangeable. Everything was a completely different size. They didn’t stick with the 901 designation because Peugeot sued them, claiming the 0 in the middle of a number set was their trademark
