- मुग़ल सल्तनत के बारे में मशहूर है कि वहाँ हमेशा एक फ़ारसी कहावत का बोलबाला रहा है 'या तख़्त या ताबूत' यानी या तो सिंहासन या फिर क़ब्र. अगर हम मुग़ल इतिहास के पन्ने पलटें तो पाएंगे कि शाहजहाँ ने न सिर्फ़ अपने दो भाइयों ख़ुसरो और शहरयार की मौत का आदेश दिया बल्कि 1628 में गद्दी सँभालने पर अपने दो भतीजों और चचेरे भाइयों को भी मरवाया. यहाँ तक कि शाहजहाँ के पिता जहाँगीर भी अपने छोटे भाई दान्याल की मौत के ज़िम्मेदार बने. ये परंपरा शाहजहाँ के बाद भी जारी रही और उनके बेटे औरंगज़ेब ने अपने बड़े भाई दारा शिकोह का सिर क़लम करवा कर भारत के सिंहासन पर अपना अधिकार जमाया. कैसी शख़्सियत थी शाहजहाँ के सबसे प्रिय और सबसे बड़े बेटे दारा शिकोह की? उस मुगल शहज़ादे दारा शिकोह की कहानी, जो अपने ही भाई औरंगज़ेब से राजगद्दी ही नहीं बल्कि ज़िंदगी भी हार गया.

पहली और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण वह अपनी बुराई नहीं सुन सकता था वहां अपने चाटुकारो से घिरा रहता था।
दूसरा वह जंग की बारीकियों को नहीं समझता था।
तीसरा वह दरबार की राजनीति को नहीं समझ पाया।
चौथा वह एक अच्छा दार्शनिक तो था पर एक अच्छा प्रशासक नहीं था।
