The Canon EOS R5 is what I would call a MASTERFUL Camera. Is it perfect...no, but it's certainly close. This is a powerful, well rounded camera, from it's 12 frames per second at 45 megapixels, to INSANE almost Sony like lock on tracking and finally it's video capabilities. This is one of the most well rounded cameras i've ever used. Canon deserves major props for being able to produce such a camera. Not to mention how amazing the RF Lenses are. Where Canon dropped the ball on this one, marketing. It should never have been marketed as a 8k video first camera. It should have been an amazing stills camera that offers solid solid video for those who need it...with some limits.
At the end of the day, I am not switching for stills but there's a good possibility that we will be replacing all our Nikon Z6's which we've been using for video with R5's and RF glass.

R5: The movie
The best movie 😅
The R stands for "Real World".
I sense some Philip Bloom influence here ;)
I laugh out loud at this !
🤣
Was anybody else waiting for the “skip ad” banner at the beginning of the video? It took me so long my realize it was actually part of the vid 😂😂😂😂
Yes. It never came lol
It took me until reading your comment to atually realize
Look at your likes 😬.
I never comment on videos, this might be my first comment ever, but this was an amazing review. It not only teaches about the camera but teaches about photography, composition, goes through a realistic photo shoot. Thanks Jared, you and your team crushed this
I appreciate the comment.
I'm not sure everyone fully appreciates all the intricacies that are involved in putting together a video like this from the scripting to the traveling, to the gear set up in the field or in studio, to the testing, to the editing to even the little things like getting your plugs right (like the Allen's camera page for pricing) for sponsors. You put together the absolute best real-world reviews of camera gear on the net. There's no shilly hype happening. Sure, there's lots of folks that put out their "reviews" on new gear when the embargo is lifted, but you don't hear much else down the road---especially if it's not the system those photographers use.
What impresses me is the extensive work you do putting together multiple videos together on a camera even when it's not in your primary system. Anyway, good job. I'll have my R5 in hand soon and will make sure to use your links. Thanks for the hard work.
thank you for noticing....one correction....there's no script.
@@froknowsphoto I used that term loosely. Just the attention to detail you pay to make sure you cover everything thoroughly.
@@froknowsphoto One short question for you, Jared. Are you ever going to review Nikons again, or are your reviews going to be just Canon and Sony?
@@U12Yak Nikon are currently not releasing anything, so there is nothing to review. Wait for the mark ii to be released, and he will do it.
the music is pretty badass too
When i first started watching his videos i thought he was just a guy on CZcams yelling and doing click-baits for views. But as time went on i understood that he was just brutally honest at all times and he was among the few reviewers who actually put in time and effort and went out and shot good pictures showing the capabilities of the gear he has. There are many with same or more equipment but rarely takes good pics and just do totally pointless lab tests and dramatise everything. Jared does useful real world reviews. Lots of love from India Jared. Keep up the good work ❤️.

Thank you! This was worth the wait!! So entertaining!!!!
Thank you for this incredible review, as always 😊. About the overheating, it is possible to record unlimited 4K HQ externally with the screen off and no memory card (and you guys do have an atomos...). Also, you don't emphasize that the 4K non HQ is unlimited internally (even though the quality is lower), but more importantly that the 4K non HQ crop is also unlimited internally (downsampled from 5.1K so very good quality, as 4K HQ).
So, as viable options to overheating there is:
- unlimited external 4K HQ (no card & screen off)
- unlimited internal 4K crop (downsample from 5.1K)
- unlimited internal 4K non HQ (but lower quality)
Long and expensive one ❤️❤️
Cheapest price for R5 here in Finland: $5740 😭
R6 is "only" $3430...
I am a sony shooter, but i still watched this entire review not because i want to switch to canon, but because i really enjoy watching Jared reviews, and this one was amazing
Right after that intro i was expecting the Peter McKinnon intro to pop up and start playing
I had similar thoughts... through the whole video I find Jared proofed and showed some of the best awesome photography I had ever seen of him! He really did a fantastic job here (photography and video wise - he deserves the success!)
Pppppwhats up everybody

Thanks for the compliment
True😂😂
The whole idea of changing systems losing money on rebuying cameras and lenses every couple of years is so inane. All the systems are incredibly capable these days.
So true. The churn continues. The Next Big Thing is always right around the corner. The reality is that any of the high-achieving photographers cranking out world-class images using any of the major systems could pick up a competitor’s system and continue to kick major ass...GUARANTEED. It’s a lesson to us all.
hence why I never left Canon!
2021 - Nikon Z8/9! Time to switch back!?!?!?
2021 - Canon 1R! The new king!?!
2022 - Why I'M switching back to Sony! Real world Sony A7RV real world review!
Well, Jared Pollin is the 1%, he doesn’t care.
Jared makes his money from changing. He promoted the latest cameras, that's his job. He does a good job, but it's up to you to decide if you want to follow
Finally the Fro has released the long awaited review of the Canon R5 👍🏻
*Long awaited long review! (*and think how much video didn't make the cut!)
I'm really skeptical of the 45 megapixel sensor. That seems like too many pixels for low light performance.
I say this in the nicest way....

Thanks!

"just the tip" says Jared multiple times in a row lol.... I see what you did there
Awesome! Always appreciate the super informative and insightful info while being entertaining. Worth the wait!
40:00 - I spoke with a canon rep and asked him about a possibility for 4K RAW in the future. He said it isn't really possible because the RAW video is just straight up the uncompressed data from the sensor which is 45 megapixels/8K native. They would have to do some extra processing/line skipping to do 4K RAW which apparently isn't possible right now. This is also why you can't film 8K RAW if you have electronic stabilization turned on, because if it crops for stabilization it can't use the full sensor readout.
I don’t understand how they can’t just crop the sensor. Bruh, so many cameras can shoot raw at different resolutions. Bmpcc6k can do 4K raw. That’s a bad excuse in canons part.
@@RiceCubeTech the bmpc6k cannot do 4k raw and it cannot do 6k prores
@Gap can confirm the filesizes for 8K raw were HUGE, like my 6 second clip was something in the 3-4gig range
Thank you Jared, Stephen and Dan!!! I have been really looking forward to your RWR.
1 hour an 22 min 4K upload, your computer must of sounded like a jet engine uploading this 🔥 great review btw
It may seem like a small thing, but thank you for endorsing mask use around 8:50. It makes a big difference to those of us who have lost someone due to COVID-19.
but then shows the artist without a mask on
What does a mask have to do with someone passing away, everyone does at one point or time mask or no mask, no one is responsible for that death.
@@David-ir3qn seriously? Man's got to be like making a girl pregnant over not using a condom and saying its none's to blame XD, thousands have died due to covid, just because you dont know what it does to your body and how it can kill you doesnt mean you can dismiss of how you get infected, this became a worldwide issue in the first place because of people infected traveling and contaging others through facial contact, cough, sneezing and spit, there are tons of people to blame for being such ignorant selfish assholes, not the authorities.

usualy i dont give a f about quality on youtube movies, but video footage recorded with R5 is just astonishing
Usually I come for the technical reviews but I'm so excited to see a real shoot like this one (or Beddia) where Jared also explains his artistic decisions in composition and editing and instead of photographing mundane test stuff, it ends up being a beautiful photo album.
Heey Jared, really awesome review! I just missed one little think that would be nice if you could help me. Does it has problems with rolling shutter on 20fps electronic shutter? Cheers from Brazil!
Hi Jared. Great video. How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your camera? I have the Canon 6d, but I was considering switching to a mirrorless camera.
Very detailed review. This went above and beyond. The time and effort it took to make a video with all the intricacies, photos, information, and not forgetting to mention the flow and sync of the teamwork with everyone involved in this was on point.
this is what is known as a narcissistic review...look at what "I" can do with this camera
Let me cut in here to say that was a great review and I’m going to pull the trigger on some merch to pay you back for the work you do here. Thanks!
Jared thanks to your team for putting this review together. Great work
Great content. We just got a R5 at work, and are being tasked to shoot very similar to what you've done here (artist working in a studio). I am finding it hard to nail the eye AF, and then switch to shooting other objects in the environment. Is there an AF method or drive mode you would suggest for doing the back and forth? Thanks.
I was seriously waiting only for your review before deciding to upgrade. A beautifully put together video!
Same!
Dang what a good high quality video. Props to all of you.
hi Jared! Great review as always. Is there a reason for not using the atomos to record what you actually saw in your evf?
Unfortunately the canon cameras dont mirror the evf when an external recorder is used so if would black out the evf if we connected it
Absolutely incredible video Jared. You’re detail and topics covered are so well executed. You give a very honest detailed review of exactly what the canon R5 does. Thank you for giving us these awesome mini documentary type reviews. A++
Jared, thank you for the tremendous effort and passion that you put into this real world review. This is simply amazing.
Hey Jared, amazing video, love the intro, thank you.
Just wanted to say I setup two different back button focus buttons. One for eye detect and one for single point touch and drag. This setup is so fast back and worth. I’m on the R6.
Me too and it is game changing. I am on the R5.
I find myself accidentally hitting them, so I keep them off.
@@froknowsphoto It is all about what you get used to, of course. I shoot a lot of wildlife and for that, having the ability to switch from servo eye-af to one-shot spot focus just by which button I put my thumb on is fantastic. It is great for people action too (sports, etc.) where sometimes you want to let the camera use its mad magic to get great focus and sometimes you want to precisely choose. The combination, available in the R5, is pretty amazing. It may be possible in other bodies, but coming from the 5Dm4, I am finding it game changing.
Great idea will try that out once the R5 arrives. Always kept manually switching to spot mode in situations where face detection didn’t know where to focus
Magnificent Job! Pleasure watching it and also very informative on shooting styles. Thanks for doing this!
Awesome work thanks Jared! How do you deal without the color profiles from Canon in Lightroom? Do you think we are going to have them one day or the other?
I think you need to do some more of these 'long' real-life reviews Jared, I have to say you are about the best reviewer out there, no BS just facts and that is how it should be. I have to be honest, when I first started watching your vids, I thought oh here we go just another 'Nikon fanboy', but it did not take long for me to realise I was sooooo wrong, even although the R5 is out of my price range at the moment, I still loved the review.
hey Jared, you mentioned shooting 'horizontical" a few times during this video, what is 'horizontical," I am familiar with horizontal and vertical.
You must be new to this channel 😂
I love your vide mane, I started doing photography 5 months ago & I’ve been using canon so far. Also my light room doesn’t give me all that options on the felt side. Do I have to buy it or it matters on the computer you have??
Very cool intro.
Kudos for the detailed in depth review.
Very well done Jarred.

*Jared:* Canon's AF system is not better than Sony yet but it's pretty close!
*Also Jared: Continues to show Sony losing focus while Canon being spot on*
Great review Jared! Thanks for taking the time and putting a useful review together. Can you comment on the build quality comparison between the R5 & R6? I'm on the fence, looking forward to your R6 review....

Excellent review Jared, amazing amount of detail and work!
It's always fun when I get to watch your thought process and the behind the scenes of the photos. That context really adds up to all the experience, which I find very useful.
57:54 - Can't customize the *Q menu* is something that bugs me too. I loved the ability to do this on the Canon 5D Mk4.
58:22 - Inability to save/transfer camera settings has been on my Canon wish list for years. It's even more necessary now with the customizability of the new R-series cameras. The 1D series bodies can do this, so please bring it to the R-series bodies.
1:10:50 - Manny Ortiz
I've had the *temperature warning* icon pop up on me during at least 4 weddings on both EOS R5 bodies. Tried the firmware update on one body and it made a difference, but when shooting tethered (wired, because there were WiFi issues where I was shooting) I had the *temperature warning* icon show up after only 30 minutes. As a still shooter who is doing more and more video jobs as well, I don't have any regrets with the Canon EOS R5 bodies. I don't like the 29-minute record limit because a couple times a year I'll record something long enough to hit that limit and it's frustrating.
I watched the whole video - it is long but it's good, very good! The stills you took and the editing/grading you did are just PERFECT! Awesome photography!
And the Video-Bits with the shallow DOF... soooo beautiful! You know your job!
I'm a pro Photographer since 1989 and I just switched from Nikon (32 Years - starting with the mighty F4S to the D850 and the D5 at the end) to Canon RF meaning two Bodies of the R5 and pretty much all the RF lenses. Therefore I could/can perfectly relate to your videos (Nikon RAW guy slowly drifting away from Nikon...). To me the deal breaker was the shifting of my job in general. Was it only BTS and Making of's that my clients were asking for until a year or two ago as to video/moving picture... they now request video quite regularly from me (even though I'm known as a photographer and not as a cinematographer). I shot two corporate videos (both around 60-90 sec) reportage for construction workers with my Nikons and I swore to myself to never ever shoot video again with Nikon.
First I thought of only puchasing one R5 and two lenses for video and for my main photography I would stick to my beloved Nikon D5... but very soon I realized what great awesome cameras those r5's are and what nice lenses AF-systems, IBIS et cetera... Therefore I switched my whole system. I'm working for two month with the Canon system now and I'm absolutely happy and I don't miss a thing comparing to my Nikons (which I was expecting).
I had the exact same problem with the uncomplete tilting of the display and the straight angles!
I'm currently filming a documentary about my mother who turns 80 this year. A lot of talking head situations plus on location shots in the fields... I film everything in 4K HQ (except very few shots B-Roll on 120fps 4K). One cam records on a Atomos Ninja 5 the other one directly to the CF-Express Card internal. Overheating is a bit of an issue. I could work around it until now - thanks to two cameras and one on an external recording drive (Ninja). But to feel even more free in the near future I preordered the coming C70 as well. I guess for those nice shallow DOF shots I will use my R5's and for 120fps/4K and for long seqences the C70.
Sorry for the lengthy comment - but the video was long too ;-)
Good, thorough review. Nicely done team!
Does the 12/20fps work still with 3rd party lens like sigma/tarmon adapted?
Wear a mask so we can protect each other, you're damn right.

Finally! I've been waiting a long time for your review of the R5. I can't wait to watch the whole video. BTW, I got my R5 at the end of July, and I love it.
So I'm trying to decide in between the 1Dx Mark III or the R5. Any suggestions? I already own a 6D Mark II with some lenses, but not sure if I should switch to the R5.
Great review Jared! Love your videos and critiques! Has really helped me on my photography journey
Been waiting to long for this
Rokinon/Samyang has two excellent AF lenses out at the moment for the RF mount, an 85 f1.4, and a 14mm f2.8. Both are around 700-800$, both are great quality, and both are weather sealed. I own the 85mm and was blown away by the performance for the price, and the 14mm seems to be amazing too. It's only a matter of time before sigma, Tamron, and others develop native lenses as the new pro bodies are out and people are beginning to switch.
Hope this helps out anyone wondering about 3rd party lenses.
I own some Samyangs and I am happy with them... and for the price, you can't beat them...
@Jay works, but without IBIS. Still a completely functional and usable setup until an update arrives.
@@eanmillerphotos I've been teetering on the Samyang 85 or the canon 85 f2 macro. I've just been seeing some really bad issues / reviews and stuff on the Samyang which has me scared to buy it, have you had any issues with it?
@@Faithfps yes, the MF didn't work, but It was a free fix with rokinon/Samyang's warranty. Believe me, this thing is an absolute powerhouse of a lens and will easily out perform the 85mm f2 in many regards, especially image rendering, bokeh, and weather sealing. Worth every penny, if you get an issue ridden unit, they will make it right.
@@eanmillerphotos I appreciate your quick reply, I'll probably pick it up then, now to decide if I want the 35mm first or the 85mm lol (I'll be adapting my lenses for the time being and I have the 85mm 1.8 which is old but still a pretty damn good lens).

The R6 review will be less than half as long because it is only 20mp and doesn't overheat in 8K. 😉
Loving my R5. Best camera I have ever bought.
Great review, I appreciate the depth and detail, and high production quality. For someone with no investment in either system, which would be a better choice for stills mixed with short video takes: Sony or Cannon? The Sony A7Siii seems like it would be the obvious choice for a studio video camera?
Fantastic informative video, thanks for this.
11:32 - “taken from the canon R5” ... it literally says the R6 in top left 😂
That just makes me happy as someone who just bought their R6 that even he couldn't identify the difference when looking at it. Yes I know there's a difference, etc, but it just makes it feel more "at home" if you will.
This video is solid gold. Solidifies me as a Jared Polin disciple. 🙏🏼💛

Thanks for the great video! I have a question though, do you know the brand of Jeremy's shoes? I love them. Cheers
I downloaded your RAW files thank you for allowing that. Question how big are the files if you shoot in a lower RES and how does the image quality look. I am on the fence between the r6 & r5 and for weddings I don't need 45 meg a pixel but other shoots possibly will need so having the more might be a help I don't know?

Great Video Jared. Thanks for that. Ive been a big fan of channel and learned a lot from it .... Hopefully one day I'll get to shake your hand !!!
Thank you!! I’ve been waiting for this for months and you did not disappoint! ☺️
As a pro photographer for the past 15 years I was looking for a real world review from another pro photographer and I’ve been a big fan of your work and your videos are super entertaining!
I got so sick and tired of the hyperbolic, video based nonsense from every other channel out there. Vlogging idiots with no actual talent or real world experience like camera conspiracies and Gerald Undone were spewing crap just to get views and fit the popular narrative of the day and MAN it got old fast!
The R5 puts Canon back on top again (not that it really matters) and I can now upgrade my 5Div and R. I’ve always stuck with Canon since day one and I laugh at brand jumpers because I’ve never, ever seen anybody take better photos by switching brands, ever. But they are a lot poorer afterwards. People who jump brands generally do so because they are too lazy to improve their skills and spending money on gear is easier - it’s a shortcut. That’s why people would rather take a pill or get surgery rather than exercise or eat properly.
As for the rare overheating (which is pretty much non-existent in Canada) that’s not really something you can compare with Nikon or Sony (which overheat too) because none of those brands have 8k, or 4K HQ super sampled from 8k and the R5 is the first mirrorless to have 4K 120. So in regular 4K modes that its competitors have, the R5 never overheats PLUS it shoots 10 bit internal and the Nikon and Sonys don’t have this. And the a7Siii isn’t worth mentioning because of its 12 MP cripple.
Great job! And I agree: I’m not a fan of the flip screens either because they make it really difficult to get horizontal lines because they are off axis. I’d much prefer the pop out screens.
I’m currently stuck in a hotel bored and this nearly 90 minute review was entertaining and super enjoyable!
As always, you guys put out the best reviews in terms of production value. I just wish Jared would bring in another photographer for the shooting/post processing. But I understand it's Jared's channel and he wants to be taking the photos. I just like him doing what he does best, hosting. Still, the photography gets better every year. So there is something to be said about watching him grow as a photographer too.
Hats off to Stephan and Dan for the shooting/editing. Very well done boys.
how they put up with the EGO is a mystery...
Great video Jared! Fun fact about the recording limit (usually 29:59) that most manufacturers use on DSLR style cameras; going above that limit classifies that camera as a video camera/camcorder under import law in the US. Stupid but thats the explanation that I was given. Hope this helps anyone that questions this limit.
Fantastic review and well worth the wait. Beats the heck out of reviews done with a couple of days' use!
Loads of expensive glass, ouch! Us recreational photographers can't afford this camera and these lenses.
I think the camera makers have largely abandoned the casual photographer. They can continue to sell old bodies and glass, but all the innovation and new products are for professionals and wealthy enthusiasts.
Advances in computational photography thanks to the inflated R&D budgets Apple, Google, et al have made dedicated cameras all but useless for the average consumer.
The R5 is a camera for pros. Those lenses are for pros. Canon and other manufacturers have affordable glass than can be adapted to the RF mount for hobbyists. For example, 20-35 f3.5-4.5, the 17-40 f4L, the 16-35 f2.8L II, The 24mm f2.8 IS USM, RF 35mm f1.8, EF 50mm 1.8 STM, Tamron 60mm f2 macro, Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 100mm f2, Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS HSM Macro, Canon 135mm f2L and the list goes on. I have an RP with the 16-35mm f2.8L that I got for about $600, the 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 that I got for $80, the 50mm f1.8 STM (that I plan to upgrade to the Tamron 45mm f1.8 VC USD) and the Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS HSM MACRO that is my sharpest lens and an amazing piece of glass for about $400.
If you want affordable you have to look into EF lenses and adapt them. They work wondefully. Even better than on EF cameras.
It’s not a recreational camera 🤷
Then it’s not for u buy something else’s and let real shooters use and get units lol
@@soravulpis96 You can get incredible images out of a 5D3. Honestly, if you go back and look at photos from 10 years ago, you can't tell me you need the best of the best to capture great images. So while having the newest camera is nice, if you go pick up a 5d3 for 1000$ you can kill it!
But company's are obviously going to price their new gear at a high price point.
It's like the PS5. You can either play the best there is now...Or you can go back and get a PS4 for dirty cheap and play what was considered the best just a couple of years ago.
I don't think you are missing out by being a couple of years behind and saving the $$$
Canon R5 Review: The Movie
The review is longer than i thought.
xD
That cold opening was absolutely amazing. Great job man.
Jared, that intro video is amazing! Great work, man.
Jared you are as always brilliant. But your comment on masks is priceless.. thank you. As a serious semi-professional photographer- but a very serious professional surgeon I want to thank you for putting it out there. Wear masks. Protect each other. Oh and your review - also priceless - R5 my main camera - shoots just about any and everything exceptionally well. Please do a review on settings
Great review as Always! Too bad Canon is tanking miserably on delivering this product! I’ve had one on order since early July, and still waiting for it. Canon keeps sending me motivational emails about taking Fall Picks of leaves, but at this rate I’ll be lucky if I’m able to photograph dead branches!!🤣😂
Hi i didn't get the adopter you spoke about for the Ef lens? I have Ef lens what adopter to use for r5?
Excellent, excellent video and review. I love how you reviewed, explained, and gave a photography class all in one. Great work, man!
The R5 is the best mirrorless hybrid ever made!
"But this lens goes to 11."
This is the kind of video that made me subscribe to this channel back in the day! Great job guys....
Very informative review. Thank you. Any news when C-LOG3 and 8K RAW light update coming to R5? Canon announced they considering and working on it, but is it 100% confirmed?
One thing that will be interesting to see over time is the longevity of these cameras. Excessive heating and cooling is destructive to batteries, sensors and processors.
I would definitely get an extended warranty if purchasing one so your aren’t out $3500 2 years after you buy it.
This is the best review I’ve ever seen in CZcams.
Hey Jared just wanted to know what camera 📷 and lens do you use to film 🎥 yourself on your videos?
Very nicely done, been waiting for a long time. Good job!
I sold my Sony a7riii rig for my main camera, and am anxiously awaiting my R5. I’m keeping my infrared body as Sony, and kept some of my favorite Sony glass. I thought Sony jumped the shark somewhat with the a7riv, didn’t love the idea of 60+ mpix. Got the 35mm prime macro as an inexpensive starter lens for the R5.
1:19:20 “Lucky for us we had more
cameras waiting for us in the refrigerator....”. If you shoot long form out in the field this is all you need to know.
Wow I was waiting to see the review and no wonder it took long! Very comprehensive and shares most of the key points I noticed while using the R5 for the past three months! Great review!
All the hardwork you put into this man! Thank you so much!
