I think that taking into consideration the economy that cost is also an important factor for a lot of pet owners, something that was omitted in this comparison. I use an alternative method to litter & traditional cat boxes so, if anyone is interested I'll explain it below.
We have three cats. Two are small geriatric females & the other is a chunky, rock solid male. There are two containers on wheels & with lids that have been modified to serve as litter boxes inside the house.
I bought the containers for around AU$23.00 each from a hardware store (Bunnings) making sure that the biggest cat had plenty of room to move & stand up in. I wanted them ot have lids so that things could be sotred on top of them. I also made sure that they were the opaique plastic that allowed plenty of light to infiltrate.
I used a Dremmel tool to cut out a square at the front of each container that would allow easy access.
bought some wire mesh from Bunnings Hardware for about AU$15.00 & cut it to a size that would allow me to bend the sides so that each piece created a low platform that would sit in the bottom of the container so that a layer of coarse bark could be put on top. The holes measured about 1.5cm. Small enough to allow finer pieces of bard through but not large enough to allow poop through.
Under the platform I can place a shallow layer of litter or water with bicarbonate soda in it to absorb urine odors. The reason I use bark is that it can be recycled either for the garden or washed & cleaned & dried by the sun ready to use again in a few weeks as a litter alternative since cat litter can be expensive & some are bad for the environment & too hard to dispose of or take too long to break down in the garden.
The poop gets cleaned out several times a day & put into a small outdoor bin lined with biodegradable/recycled bags ready for weekly collection along with the other household rubbish.
Since we have a backyard, the litter containers are taken outside to be cleaned thoroughly several times a week. The wire mesh platforms are removed with the bark on top & the water & urnine underneath is emptied onto the garden. The used bark is shaken off the mesh onto a pile in a designated area where it's drenched with the disinfectant water mix used for the containers, hosed down with clean water & left to dry naturally from the sun before being placed back into bags ready to be used again several weeks later. The cats had no issues learning to use the boxes & bark & this method has saved me hundreds of dollars each year in litter as well as being great for the environment.

Le Comte de Monte-Felin here... yep, a variety of boxes help skittish cats "go" with less worry about being attacked by other cats who pester them at any (and EVERY!) chance.
As a bachelor - I have two concrete mixing pans (about 2' x 3' - open top) and a standard littler box tray in the garage plus a 'tall' box upstairs for cats who are afraid to go down to the main boxes.

Very cool! Nice job! What great information. You even demonstrate how to scoop. Love it! Kwazi Uli and Ginger have preferred open trays, but we will try the top loaders. Very innovative. I know that some people recommend placing litter boxes in different areas of the home, but with a small apt, that's not possible. Thanks again for the info : D

You are sooooo helpful. I have a custom catio I am (hopefully with help) going to extend. What kind of pine bedding are you using? I am looking into treated horse bedding, 40 lbs for 8 usd $, but altering the bottoms with drill holes for the urine to compost and the 💩 with sawdust and compost bags in the litter genie. Figured out how to compost my large doggo’s waste. I won’t be using this particular compost, but our local farms do. I love that you used the storage bins. We have the budda igloo, two of the oval with top grid, a large triangular box, two regular rectangular and a large hooded. However, I want a much better organized and level system, in which I love what you did. Thank you for the great ideas!

I was skeptical going into this video, but it was awesome! I love that you have a variety of boxes and that they are able to become a part of cat climbing too. The Ikea bin thing is genius. Before I got a Litter Robot, we had giant plastic containers as litterboxes. Seemed comfy for the cats but they were a bit clunky to move around when the time came. Although now, I'm definitely a Litter Robot convert. The only thing I wish is that it was compatible with litters I liked more.

I just found your channel and subscribed. We don’t live in an apartment but live in a mobile home with cats/kittens and two dogs/1 puppy. The puppy loves to get in the litter boxes. I love this idea as we have it up high on our chest freezer which is horrible as we have to put the litter boxes on the floor if we need something out of it. I have a rack that I was going to store cat and dog canned food on but after this video I am doing this instead. I love the idea of top load litter boxes. I didn’t even know it was a thing. Buying some this coming week. Thanks for the idea. I look forward to more videos and will watch your other videos.

Soy litter is very absorbent, Eco friendly and takes odors well (but not all brands are created equal). The top loaders are good if your cat doesn't have joint issues, it might not be preferable for senior cats so make sure you have simple no lid ones w low edges for them to choose which ones they like ~

But try to find like a cork or something to plug the bars hole as cats paws can get stuck and cause damage if it's stuck and they got chased by another day , or if they fell and landed from above ...

Some cats like to stand up and put their paws on the edge of the box to help them go #2. I have had many cats over the years and have had at least two cats that liked to do this.
One would actually balance all 4 paws on the edge to go #2. Not sure how she could do that on such a small edge but she did and my current cat likes to balance with 3 paws on the edge to go #2.
I would recommend getting some lower boxes that aren't covered just incase some of your cats find it easier to go that way.

@@MrRazzymikeI know this is an old comment, but I'm replying to it anyway because it may help someone.
I learned about using baking soda sprinkled in with the cat litter while reading online about people's experiences with all different types of litters.
It was a game-changer! Absolutely amazing at keeping odors from forming!
But you have to use enough, which may vary. But it's cheap and WORTH IT!
As a side note, I have NEVER had experienced litter box odor with my cats over the years because I fed them a home-made raw diet that I came across instructions for from a veterinarian's website.
But my kitties have always been rescue cats or strays, but one was a rescue who needed to be rescued again, and our vet discovered on our new kitty's 2nd visit that he had lost some weight probably due to bad teeth bothering him, and so he must have been eating less, so the bad teeth had to come out.
After that, he picked up his lost weight, but due to so few teeth left, and possibly other unknown reasons, he would only eat the patė fancy feast flavors.
But that change in diet now made his poo smell AWFUL! Ugh!
But thank goodness for the tip about the baking soda mixed in with the kitty litter!
It saved the day - and our noses!
The jumbo litter box is around the corner from the kitchen and bedroom, so serious help was needed and baking soda came to the rescue!
Just remember that if the poo is not buried a little, then the smell will still escape.
So if your cat doesn't bury it, then use the scooper to put some on top (that should already be mixed with the baking soda), and the stink will be absorbed as the poo dries out.
Then later you can just scoop it out and toss it away as usual.
The other cat's poo does not stink because they continue to eat the raw diet.

Look at wood pellets. like 4$ per bag, 40 pounds each. Clay and other 'litter' products is just horribly expensive for litter. You can just straight up toss this in the garbage every 3 days and never worry because it's so cheap. I can fill a box, and scoop every day, and after 5 days I replace it completely. Legit costs like 30 cents to fill the litter box.

one of the great things about cats is that they can be trained to use a human toilet. it takes a while (took me about five months to train my cat) and requires some patience and a lot of positive reinforcement, but once they're used to it, it's a game-changer. no more litter tracked into my bed, no more holding back a gag when i clean the litter box, no more worrying that my house smells like cat pee when i have guests over (if you have a litter box, your house WILL smell like pee to other people, there's no way around it and you will not be able to smell it yourself because you're used to it, and most guests are too polite to say anything).
some of the worries i've seen people stating about toilet training a cat are:
    a) that the cat will release toxoplasmosis gondii into the water supply, which can cause complications in human pregnancy. but TG is a parasite that cats get from eating mice and other vermin that they catch outdoors. if your cat is 100% indoor and always has been, they don't have TG and you're fine.
    b) that it's stressful for the cat to use a human toilet. i can't know what's going on in my cat's head but he doesn't complain or seem to have any trouble with it. he does have a tendency to scratch at the bowl like it was litter, but that's fine.
    c) that it can be hard on older cats to get up on the toilet to use it, and older cats may struggle to learn in the first place. my cat is currently 13 and i toilet trained him when he was 8. he learned perfectly fine and didn't seem upset by the process. he doesn't have any trouble getting up on the toilet but when and if he does, i'll get him some little stairs to help get up there.
most people who have attempted to toilet train their cat give up too quickly. you have to use one of those kits that allow you to put a modified litter box into the toilet bowl, and you have to settle in to at least two to three months of your kit being in the first stage. it takes a WHILE for cats to get the hang of it. you will have accidents. they will poop behind couches and they might aim the wrong way when pooping and poop off the side of the bowl onto the floor. you just have to pick up the poops and put them where they're supposed to go and the cat will figure it out. be patient and gentle and whenever your cat does it correctly, give lots of positive reinforcement. keep the light at the end of the tunnel in mind.

    • @MeloCat
      @MeloCat  Před 8 měsíci +1

How about try to offer a litterbox and see what your cat chooses? Cats are masters at hiding pain so if they have a hard time and there's no alternative it's hard to know what they really want.
Not being able to monitor their excrements is a problem when having them use the human toilet.
From what I was told having them use the human toilet is convenience at their expense. If you ask vets most would say the same thing. Just because they are using it doesn't mean they like it

    • @Zelda_Thorn
      @Zelda_Thorn Před 8 měsíci

@@MeloCat it is way, way easier to monitor their poop when they go in the toilet. it's right there. if there is blood or dark color urine, you see it.
as for whether or not he's in pain using it.. he's usually pretty vocal about anything he doesn't like, and he seemed pretty unbothered during the training. if he'd been bothered i wouldn't have continued. the point of training is to get them to see the toilet as just another kind of litterbox, so i honestly think if i gave him a choice between toilet and litter he would use both.
every vet he's seen since he's been trained has thought it was not a problem and have mostly been impressed or thought it was funny.
