- Are Indians really defecating in the open? I got sick of trolls insulting Indians, so I'm going to show you the reality of public toilets in the largest city in India, New Delhi. We'll travel down a street in Delhi which encompasses all of India, and I'll show you the reality of toilets in India, including in the slums. It's not what you think.
A lot of people have really outdated views about India, especially in regards to open defecation and the "lack of public toilets" in India. The Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Campaign has made great strides in India since its inception in 2014 with literally tens of millions of toilets built and billions of dollars spent every year on building them.

I am not ashamed of India being poor but really really ashamed at the lack of cleanliness, civic consciousness and total disregard of public property and indiscipline..
Maybe the problem lies in the total lack of early (civic) education on these matters. You can build as many toilets as you want, but it's almost useless if you don't educate the people in sanitation, ecology, respect of nature, respect of individual AND public property, etc...
I was on the train one day with a group of students in "Environmental Studies". After lunch on the train, they ALL threw out their garbage out of the train window without a hint of consciousness. So it ensued a conversation about ecology, and their duties as (supposedly more) enlightened citizens on these subjects... It was quite appaling...

I and many of my friends some of them females (white ashkenazi Israelis) have travelled solo to India.
They said:
When it comes to poverty, scams, women safety, filth it is only North India ( Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai).
And it is only confined till there.
Beyond that it is completely different.
South India ( Industrialized with good infra, almost no poverty, considerably clean+ no issue with women who roam freely in western dresses, especially Goa and Kerala, which are tourist hotspot for white russians. Goa has a huge russian population residing there).
Northwest India( clean, you can hardly call it a shythole if you see its pics, beautiful himalyas, remote mountain towns namely Dharamsala where white europeans love to go for natural retreat+ huge tibetan community with Dalai Lama, Look at Ladakh once, it will change your perception for sure).
Northeast India ( himalyas+ natural paradise with the locals culturally+ racially east Asians and buddhists. And Buddhists are clean and they don't scam.)

About the hand soap, the easiest answer is it'll be stolen lol. But then again many public toilets have hand sanitizers and well management to replace them time to time. It just depends on place and people. One thing I can confirm is that people do wash their hands properly after doing the thing.

I just came back from India and my experience was vastly different… I witnessed people squat down between vehicles, out in the open, and just let it go.

They said:

And it is only confined till there.
Beyond that it is completely different.
South India ( Industrialized with good infra, almost no poverty, considerably clean+ no issue with women who roam freely in western dresses, especially Goa and Kerala, which are tourist hotspot for white russians. Goa has a huge russian population residing there).
Northwest India( clean, you can hardly call it a shythole if you see its pics, beautiful himalyas, remote mountain towns namely Dharamsala where white europeans love to go for natural retreat+ huge tibetan community with Dalai Lama, Look at Ladakh once, it will change your perception for sure).
Northeast India ( himalyas+ natural paradise with the locals culturally+ racially east Asians and buddhists. And Buddhists are clean and they don't scam.)
