It is the one thing that most people say why they won't cruise so thought it would be worth a chatter about!
I love formal nights! On our 14 night October, Cunard New England & Canada cruise we had Black & White, Roaring Twenties, Royal Ascot, Masquerade & Gala night - 5/14. Everyone in the MDR seemed to join in and as you say if you don't want to dress up just go to the buffet.
We enjoy them too, there is not the opportunity so much at home to put your best on! There is always the option of the buffet for those that don't so understand that too!
