Fun fact! Kendrick Lamar's kung fu kenny persona is based off of don cheadles character in Rush Hour 2！He even invited Don Cheadle to one of his concerts to have his approval in using this persona!

2:44 - Chinese restaurants in the US and Canada often have a pork dish called "moo shu". Wikipedia has it as 木须肉 and says it comes from Shandong, but the American version is made differently. So I guess Chris Tucker's character is just using a crude metaphor, e.g. women = meat.

I’m surprised the Rush Hour film crew allowed that slur in their script. Also it’s interesting to learn that Zhang Ziyi is reading lines translated from English.
When the movie was made, that slur was all over American movies. I'll bet the old subtitles translated it accurately and they've adjusted them more recently.
I downloaded a lot of movies when I was living in China for 7 years. The movies would always have both Chinese and English subtitles. The English was, however, translated by a Chinese person. Sometimes (and I'm sure it was due to censorship) some of the translations were really funny. I remember in one "action movie" one of the tough-guys said to another (and this is an exact quote because I could read his lips), "I'm going to kick your fucking ass!. The line was translated as "I will defeat you!". ... Not exactly the same thing. Hee hee. 😅🤣😂

He said 黑鬼 (the pronunciation differs between Cantonese and Mandarin, but they sound very similar, Li says them both), which literally translates to Black Ghost, and it's a racial slur for black people. I just know this because I was recently researching the accuracy of Chinese profanity in a video game I was playing. From what I could tell, the words on their own are not offensive and can be used separately, but together they are offensive. Socially, it's not as bad as the American version of the word, but still bad.
Li only said it in Mandarin to explain to Jessie what the line(originally in Cantonese) was since Li is a native Cantonese speaker while Jessie isn't. It's a racist word in both Mandarin and Cantonese, but this movie contains lots of racist jokes so I guess it kinda makes sense they said this? Not sure if the filming crew knew this though.

As for the line itself, I think it's fitting. That's what you would expect a bunch of gangsters to say.
I worked in a Cantonese speaking restaurant for 17yrs. My WoRk colleagues would call me this word aLL the time. But only when I would encourage them to do so by calling myself the same word jokingly in front of them. They NeVeR said to me in a racial tone. I miss those days. LoL
it is sort of a racist term, but it is now considered more of a politically incorrect term to use. It is now more in line with like using the word oriental. The word is still widely spoken, by many of the older generations. You would never hear a politician say this word anymore. The more politically correct term most used today is 黑人 (black person).

Rush hour 1 is a good watch, and maybe useful for your content because most of that movie, they use mandarin. Confused me quite a bit when I was younger when I realized they were speaking different languages in the two movies.

It was interesting to find out that all of Lee's translations of Carter's horrible Chinese were all made up and not accurate. Funny.
That’s one of the oldest tropes in American TV or film, and American goes to a foreign country and doesn’t speak the language and when they try to speak it they either insult the other person or say something absurd.
On the other hand I thought the writers were pulling dick moves and making him say nonexistent Cantonese-sounding gibberish, kind of enlightening to hear they were real sentences (sort of lol)

I think the Mushu thing is just supposed to be a euphemism - sometimes people will use a word or phrase suggestively, and expect you to know what they're actually talking about. It doesn't have to be a common saying that people would normally use! In films especially, they'll say something unusual to seem cool or clever.
Like it's common to hear people use words for food or sweet things to talk about women (less common now because it's seen as a bit weird and gross) and they'll often tie it into some characteristic of the woman - like referring to black women as "chocolate", or talking about "sweet tea" when eyeing up a woman in the American south. So referring to Chinese women in a sexual way as "Mushu" or "sweet and sour" or whatever, it's that kind of behaviour. I don't know if there's supposed to be some clever wordplay there, but it comes across as that kind of weird objectifying cliche, like he's being gross and a bit weird - but it was probably meant to be kinda charming at the time! A regional variation on the theme because he's in HK, y'know
Sorry for the long comment, you just seem really interested in all the cultural language weirdness, so I thought I'd try to give you a sense of how it sounds to a westerner! It's not always this kind of euphemism (like Tarantino likes to use "cool phrases" instead of just having characters refer to things explicitly) but the whole "referring to women sexually" thing is a common trope, especially in 80s/90s stuff

I was watching a Jackie Chan movie once that was original Chinese but was dubbed in English . But when I turned on the subtitles it was funny since they had real Chinese interpretation . For example the English subtitle showed Jackie Chan at food both asking for rice ball or something like that , but the dubbed in English voice he says " Give me a hamburger " - ha ha . These video reactions you make are fun !

My favourite Rush Hour film... only because of Zhang Ziyi. Every film she is in is the better for it. This makes Hero the best film ever as it not only has Ms Zhang but also "Maggie" Cheung Man Yuk. The two most beautiful women on earth in the same film. Outstanding.
I love the scene when Tucker says I have never hit a woman before, but you ass is pushing it. Then she hits him in the head. Just perfect.

I watched this movie in the cinemas with my friends who spoke Cantonese at home. They weren't fluent, they only spoke Cantonese with their family. I asked them what was being said in the movie but they had a hard time trying to explain it. I do remember at the end of the movie for a lot of the outtakes, Jackie Chan was improvising his lies when he told Chris Tucker what he just said in Chinese. There were a lot of different takes for his improvised lines. This is definitely my favorite movie of the trilogy. I like the first one because the DVD has a track for the music only and a commentary from the composer of the music. It's pretty exciting. The composer also did the music for Bruce Li's Enter The Dragon in 1973. Lalo Schifrin composes really fun music for all sorts of movies.
7:12 that's Don cheedle. He's mainly known for dramatic roles like hotel Rwanda. Later generations know him as war machine from the marvel movies.

It's great watching this movie from a Chinese perspective. There's a great deal of cultural cues that we Americans miss or don't take into consideration. The biggest surprise to me was that the Chinese Carter was speaking were actual sentences and phrases. "Let's go get something to eat", "Everybody go home!" I always thought that he was speaking random gibberish the script writers put in and had Jackie Chan come up with the funniest and most random translation for the sake of humor.
7:10 "This guy. Who is he"? Jessie, Li is correct. This guy has been in a ton of movies. He's very talented. His name is Don Cheadle. For a good (and funny) example of his work, watch "The Guard". It's a really funny cop movie filmed in Ireland.

I really enjoyed watching them enjoy American culture. Especially the ice cube Friday CD and him filling her in with correct info. I grew up in LA so I could relate with the movie so I'm wondering how they will perceive the movie. I'm excited for them. Perfect example of worlds coming together.

I also never noticed the veranda (or even have the vocabulary for it), but that definitely carries over in SF Chinatown. Makes sense as there were much larger population of Cantonese speakers there growing up.
I first saw this in early 2000s as a kid, it was fun and still holds up to this day. I have watched it countless times since then, the first Rush Hour is equally good too.
4:39 Jackie would hire his own stunt team to work on his movies with him any chance he gets, he feels safer working with who he knows and the action scenes always end up better. I say this to say that all the henchmen that ended up in the scaffold scene probably did their own stunts.
4:47 The action in Shang Chi And The Ten Rings was Choreographed by Brad Allan, the first white Martial Artist to be enrolled into Jackie Chan's Stunt team. Shang Chi was the last film he worked on before he died. All similarities to Jackie Chan's work in that movie are most likely intentional.

I'm surprised that you started with the second. The first movie opens with the handover of Hong Kong to China, and Jackie's character is a HK police officer who is teaching the daughter of a governor who is leaving HK after the handover. But they speak to each other in Mandarin. And that baffled me when I saw it. I'm guessing they casted an American to play the daughter and she spoke Mandarin rather than Cantonese and they just rolled with it because American viewers wouldn't know the difference. The character moves to the US after that, but in the third film she's played by a Chinese actress with a strong accent.

New line cinema is pretty much always around as it’s a subsidiary of either paramount or MGM I forget which exactly. It’s Brett Rainer’s play thing really. It’s kinda different in the film industry here as the big studios like MGM, Tristar, or Disney always come up with the ideas for movies but the smaller companies do the actual filming or animation. Sending the film to another editing company to make changes and stuff. While sound is being done by two more companies like a pure dubbing company which records audio just for voices just in case a piece of audio goes bad, and a pure sound effects company that does sound effects like punches or blood splatter as they don’t translate well on film so they make something to fill the void. Finally a distribution company that sends the movie out to theaters or to the store. It’s a complex chain that takes at least a year to sort out. Disney is trying to cut the distribution aspect by releasing Disney + and a lot of other companies are doing the same with paramount and all this stuff not only for the pandemic but to save money to go into other projects. Disney released a good number of movies in under a year because of Disney+ usually it’s about 2 to 3 per year but they released like 5 last year and more on the way.

Zhang Ziyi is playing the stereotypical Chinese Dragon Lady. In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon(2000), her character had more depth. What is she yelling in Mandarin Chinese when she blows herself up with a bomb?

How do you not know Jackie does all his own stunts? He choreographs most as well. I didn't realise Maggie Quigley was in this, I always thought she shortened it because it was unpronounceable to us, but no. You should watch The Foreigner for a Jackie Chan film, not much Mandarin in it though.
