Very slick. Just got into euro nymphing, in fact I've just returned to fly fishing after a 25 year break and I've found your euro nymphing series really informative. One major difference I've picked up on from the setups people use over here in the UK is they don't bother with the fly line if you are using a 30ft mono rig. They just tie the mono rig directly to the backing. This makes the 'knot/join' even neater. Also fits nicely into your 'budget' option as you've saved money on a flyline you just don't use. They also use 'closed cage' reels to neate the mono getting pulled under the rim of the reel.
Once again Bryan you've distilled your experience/observations and focused on what works more efficiently. I have never sworn on the water so intently as when my leader to fly line knot jams in the guides, especially when trying to take up the slack to set the hook. Nothing worse than having your concentration disturbed like that. After all sorts of nail & needle knots I've only had mild improvements - this, I'm all over like a rash. Best to you & thanks for sharing. Funnily enough, I've had promising results over summer developing euro nymphing principles to periods of fast tidal flows in shallow saltwater areas, especially bottleneck current areas. For short periods of the tide good fish venture into those shallows areas to feed on baitfish or drifting food. But man oh man, are they savage (particularly silver trevally) when you hook up, fast brutal encounters - burnt fingers & great fun! Oh, a simple (light gray works especially well) marabou tail added to a euro nymph like a red dart is smashed hard.

Have fun! It is really pretty easy to do on the leader side. The micro loop is the tricky part but well worth it in the end. They key for me was keeping the thread wraps pretty tight so it holds it tight. My first attempt pulled out when I pulled hard enough when it didn't have super glue. All of my loops afterward (I kept the thread wraps much tighter) would not pull out even without the super glue!

Thank You! This is awesome. I tried Euro Nymphing for the first time this weekend with my 9' #5 on 4x. Lost the two biggest trout (1 Brown, 1 Lighting) I've ever had take a fly in 40 years of fly fishing on a stretch of river I have fished my entire life! Old Dogs can learn new tricks and this one is hooked. Got'a get me a Euro Nymph rod my #5 just does not have the tip for it. By the way the Lighting Trout, well over 20", was like having a gallon jug of water on the line in heavy water. Never even got a good look at the Brown. Peace out from the California Sierras.
That's awesome! Most fisherman will fish over the majority of fish and never know they are there. A good euro nympher will find more and bigger fish consistently. I'm glad you've seen the light 😂 Good luck the rest of the season and beyond! And welcome to the channel! 😀👊

Great video - I have been using a nice tool - 3-in-1 Nail Knot pipe and I find it super usefull to splice my fly line and nail knot my tippet.
The times I've tried to tie a nail knot (even with the tool) it has not gone well! 😂
Live the tutorial! I’ve had issues with super glue (cyano acrylate) making fibers brittle, so I use a little UV cure resin. Has stiffness, but enough flexibility not to make the fibers break. Highly recommend.
I coat the micro loop connection with UV Resin now myself. But I still use the superglue underneath. I fought a monster 33" fat hen of a steelhead in a really small stream as she tried to bury me in trees. I've NEVER pulled so hard on a rod\line in my life! And everything held up incredibly well! It was the fight of a lifetime and so glad I had that micro loop connection as I had to bring it into the guides a few times.
i started doing that on alot of the knots in my euro setup as well, since i kept having the perfection loop knot get stuck in my tip guide (pre-made leaders). Ive only had it crack once, but i think it was my fault for not using an equal amount on both sides.

Just tried my first attempt at micro leader. Used 20 feet of 8 lb camelion and cortland 7.3 lb bi color sighter. Fished really well. May switch to the micro loop. Thanks for the illustration.
I love a micro leader... I'm not down to the the 8# like you are but I noticed a real difference in my current setup over my older setup (15#). I was on the Ausable with the new setup and fishing pocketwater. There was a long run that could not be waded and a great seam on the other side. I wanted to fish it so bad. I was able to cast effectively really far away and still have really good feel and I connected with the best fish of the day at that long distance. I'm not sure I could have done that with my old setup.

I do the same leader but I also use UV thin to cover the loop and the clinch knot goes through the guides even better

I didn't have any luck with a nail knot as well. I ran an albright last salmon season but its very bulky through the eyes. Fingers crossed this holds up to the kings.

Sure... IF (and that's a big if) you can tie it effectively. I find most people cannot tie it effectively.
Great video, it never hurts getting knowledge somewhere else, you never know when you're gonna use it. I do it a little differently. I just use shrink tubing to make the smallest loop I can in the .022. I make the tag come out a little longer than when I normally do a welded loop because it's gotta survive the straight tie to tippet "pull test" and then to finish it, I add a little brushing of Gorilla Glue gel (barely, just insurance). I then let this sit overnight (though it's dry to the touch in < 15 minutes) add another touch, let sit another night then it's a go. I'm fairly proficient at making these loops I've been doing it so long, and every so often when they get worn I'll just cut them and do another. One of the greatest - yet simplest - inventions I've ever come across. . .though I think it has more to do with the burning of whatever's in the fly line (polyurethane, etc?) that crates the gluey material whilst creating it than anything to do with the clear tube used to create it.

Thanks a lot for your videos, they are awesome! How about using something like Berkley NanoFil as the main line instead of the mono? In this way it can be much thinner for the same resistance and it would glide much better. Would that work? Should you always have descending sizes from the main line to the tippet ring as long as resistance is descending? For example I would like to have a thicker sighter.
I like the idea of the micro loop to mono connection. After viewing another website on the subject, that person advocated creating an opportunity for moving back-and-forth between mono rig and standard fly line leader. That way if you’re out in the middle of the river nymphing and suddenly trout start rising around you, you can take off the mono rig and store it on a spare spool, pull out a standard fly leader and attach it with a loop to loop and then fish with Dry flies. A slightly larger loop than your micro loop would probably create enough space for a standard loop to loop connection to a fly leader. Perhaps using a 2-0 or 3-0 hook to form the micro loop around would make enough space for a loop to loop while keeping it small enough that it Minimizes resistance going through the rod guides. Might be worth a try.

Yes!! That is the great thing about the mono rig. You don't need a euro fly line and by using a standard weight forward floating line you can change leaders and go cast a dry fly! Many people like it for that! You can do a loop to loop with the micro loop I tie. It doesn't take much to get the loop knot of a standard leader through the micro loop.
Great video. Another thing you could do is splice your leader up into your flyline with super glue then wrap your same thread over top of the connection. It's super smooth and strong. 1x leader( Rio black and white), and 2x sighter (Rio pink and yellow). Only one joining knot, one tippet ring and then your Flys. Simple and you will big fish with ease.
Yeah... I've seen that method done (Super Glue Splice). I may try that at some point too.

Nice micro loop, I still use a nail knot It slides through the guides very well just keep a knot tool with me at all time and thats just basically just a piece of wire in my pouch

Thanks for yours videos, really good material. I am waiting the open of the season here in chilean Patagonia. I have a few question, how far from the tippet ring you tie the tag to the dropper fly? Do you always use that distance or you vary the length? If you are fishing in a really shallow river, do you use a shorter tippet, shorter dropper tag or shorter tippet to the point fly?

I'm glad you found us and are enjoying the videos! The tippet length from the tippet ring can definitely vary depending on water conditions. You can shorten the tippet length if you are consistently fishing shallower water. I tend to leave mine a bit longer and just keep the sighter further off the water but that's because my rivers have varying depths for the most part and its the easiest way for me to fish without constantly adjusting tippet length. Typically from tippet ring to the dropper tag is between 4 or 5 feet for me but you can make it shorter for shallower water.
Hi Bryan, is it 12lb maxima tick enough to have a nice grip when setting a hook? With 30' of mono you will always have that amnesia piece in your hands, I get that was the whole point, but tell me is it gonna get curled after somebtime of usage? I have an idea to actualy remove my 3wt fly line and just put hi-vis yellow 50lb braid instead, what you think about that? I have been using the 12# maxima for a while and it is definitely thinner than the euro fly line... but I haven't had any trouble holding the line or setting the hook with it in my hand. It also has not developed a curl to it yet but it I will probably replace the 12# maxima once or twice a year. I've noticed it doesn't feel quite as smooth as when I put it on the reel... Other than that it has been doing great and I really like it. I've had quite a few people asking about using braid instead of mono. I haven't personally tried it but the stiffness of the mono can help with casting. Braid will not give you that. In the end I'm not sure how much I really rely on the stiffness of the mono and since I haven't tried braid I can't give an honest comparison. If you try it, let me know what you think!
Another great video! What specifically makes a mono rig different from a euro-nymphing leader? Just whether or not it's attached to fly-line?
A mono rig really just has a much longer mainline section so that your fly line never comes off the reel when you are casting. With my old leader, my fly line was in the rod guides the whole time which lead to my fly line disintegrating over time and also led to my knot that connects the leader to the fly line to be in the rod guides and getting caught when I tried to cast. So I changed my leader from having a 12 foot mainline section to having a 30 foot mainline section which means the leader to fly line knot is always on my reel when casting and I don't have any knots to content with in my rod guides when casting. So much smoother!
@jon hart My leader does not change based on the season. I use the same leader setup winter, spring, summer and fall!
Awesome! Could you also just double over the braid and then wrap thread over the braid material only and not the plastic? Maybe it would be skinnier that way, though maybe harder to form a whip knot. Thanks much! Toney
I've never tried that. The only think I can think of is that you would likely want to cover the start of the actual fly line with something like UV resin so it doesn't cause issues itself and start coming apart and causing problems. My micro loop secures the fly line section down so it can't do that. I do coat the wraps with UV Resin now too. It is very smooth when going through the guides.
If you’re using a braid core line, have you ever considered the super glue splice connection? Way more simple and the thinnest possible. Never had one come apart and I’ve hooked many a salmon as a bycatch trout fishing. Great video!
Yes... I definitely have considered it. That was the other method I was referring to when I mentioned Devin Olsen.
I have a question. I know you use Saber Hooks from Fly Shack. I recently purchased size 12 Stonefly Saber Hooks. Some of the hooks as I’m tying flies seem very soft (they bend way to easily). I thought at first it was the tension on my bobbin but as I use the same hook and I tie the exact same fly I experience hooks bending very easily. It’s like they haven’t been heat treated. I have emailed Fly Shack with my concern.
I use Saber jig style hooks for my normal nymphs. I haven't used their hooks for my stoneflies. I typically use a Mustad hook for those and even they bend and wobble more as you tie. Since I haven't used that style of Saber hooks I can't compare the 2. I do have some Firehole barbless jig streamer hooks that I'm trying that are much stiffer hooks. I'm basically interested in those hooks for steelhead as I need a stout hook for big fish. I've not had any issues with the Mustad hooks I use for the stoneflies I tie and I've caught plenty of 20"-22" fish on them. I also don't have an issue with the Saber 60 degree jig hooks.

Ok so...I'm new to Euro Nymphing. I have the 10' rod, reel, and Rio Euro Nymphing 3wt flyline (green line with orange on the last 6"). I'm guessing that all that's needed now is 2' of 5X fluorocarbon tippet. Am I correct? Thanks, Ken Bethlehem, PA
You will want a long leader after your fly line. I would start by following my leader formulas in this video. czcams.com/video/KS2Sv2Y-oK8/video.html It provides diagrams and materials. If you want to keep it simple you can buy premade leaders that I have links to in the description of that video.

You are correct. You don't have to use a fly line at all... you can just use a mono rig unless the water you are fishing requires a fly line.
This is a very good instructional on leader set-up and am going to standardize on what you have demo'ed.
Question: Maxima Chameleon seems to be very popular among many CZcamsrs for the main line of their leader, why is this? What is special about Maxima Chameleon and why should I buy this?

Thanks! Maxima Chameleon is a stiff monofilament line. The stiffness can help to turn the flies over on the cast, making accuracy in casting easier... so they say. Overall, I find it has worked very well for me.

If stiffness for the back part of the leader is the primary criteria, it would seem to me any monofilament could be used equally as well and at less cost. Unless the Maxima Chameleon has some other magic quality is there any reason why my spools of 15# or 20# Trilene Big Game won't work identically as well?

I think skipping the fly line all together is also an option. Put 100 yards of mono directly onto your backing. No knots, less water drag when fighting a large fish. You can spool up a spare spool for the times you need to switch to a dry or indicator rig.
If I hadn't already had the fly line on there, this is exactly what I would do!
Can I ask why you don’t use something like the New Zealand strike indicator? I find it much easier to see than the bi-coloured monofilament. Thanks for some highly informative videos. So many videos on CZcams are more about the skills of the fisherman than how to do things to improve one’s own skills.
Thank you! I just happened upon my purpose with CZcams and it was to help others! That is what drives me. As for the NZ indicator... I have never tried them. Mostly because I don't usually have any issue seeing my sighter. i have 2 initial concerns with the indicator. 1. My sighter can cover many feet so I can submerge my sighter if I want without affecting my drift too much and still be able to see the portion of the sighter that is above the water. With the NZ it is one point. 2. If I have to get deeper it would be difficult to submerge the indicator. BUT... I have not actually tried it... so I wouldn't really know until I try it :)
Fly Shack returned my inquiry about their Saber Stonefly size 12 7033 hooks. They found the same issue in their stock. They are sending me replacement hooks.
Oh Wow! So it must be more than the normal bend. Crazy.

What ever works, works. I keep it stupid simple. 30 feet of high vis green 10 lbs Big Game for the leader. 10 feet of 6 lbs Berkeley Vanish for the tippet. 2 pheasant tail brass bead nymphs. Works great on the Conejos River.

Note, prolonged exposure to water causes superglue to breakdown over time and render it completely useless. I would urge you to use a different adhesive. Use gorilla glue, adiseal, or some other waterproof adhesive.
Thank you for your feedback on that. I had checked with several people who have used super glue to find out how it worked for them. I had considered putting a light coating of UV resin on it to seal it and based on what other people have said that works well. I think i'll be doing that soon! For my setup the super glue shouldn't have too much exposure to water as it is pretty much on the reel the whole time but I don't want to take any chances with it!
With over 30’ mainline sighter and leader, I don’t use a fly line, just tie onto backing.
Yeah... agreed... My fly line is doing nothing in this setup (which is exactly what I wanted).
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany yeah use light weight backing and then your able to reach further on the larger rivers and control the mainline with less sag from a fly line. Watch Andy Buckley from the UK, the guy has it figured out, he does use a fly line at times.

Honestly, you don't! You could go full mono rig and skip the fly line all together.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany The rod might balance better with the weight of the fly line? I'm just setting up a Euro rig... I'm going to use the back section (running line) from a cheap 4wt forward line (about 53 feet) and then your longer mono rig attached to that... by losing the tapered belly of the line I'll keep it skinny, and be able to use more backing.
@@mikeymon1 Fly line is so light I would doubt it matters much in terms of weight. But I like your idea for your setup! Great way to do it.

I couldn't believe you got that glue all over your fingers, now that's dedication! Really liked your tips and technics. Oh and instead of using a clinch knot try a uni knot instead, stronger and just as easy to tie.

If you can tie it effectively, then absolutely. I find most people cannot make a nail knot well at all... even when using tools. I've tried it in the past and honestly struggled to do it effectively. Now that I have the micro loop I can replace my leader at will if I want.
Why don’t you just use a nail knot between the fly line and the leader?
I have found that most people cannot tie a nail knot effectively even when using a tool. I have never really liked how they turn out for me either. I know a lot of people who like them so like I always tell people, definitely do what is right for you! I will probably never use one... but who knows... maybe I will one day.
They work really well for me. I also add a drop of UV resin on the knot. This really lets it slide easily through the guides.
I thought about doing the exact same thing with the UV Resin and had one other comment from someone who does it. I was worried how it would hold up. The other person said it holds up well. Does it hold up well for you too?

Dude, you sure do make things way more difficult just to do some Euro Nymphing. You can keep things more simple than you have. From Nymphing Fly Guide
😂 To each their own. I have always tweaked and played with my setups to improve my personal experience. This setup fishes really well and I love it, but I always tell people, you have to do what feels right for you. And to be honest the leader setup is not hard at all. If I had not slowed down to make a video it would be done in about 5 minutes.
If the fly line does not matter then why not just use pure backing and tie your leader to it. this will save you $$$$$.
A few people have mentioned that and I think some people do it. I would recommend trying it for sure and see if there is anything you don't like about it... and let me know what you think. It is just not something that I have tried.
