  • I had one day in Penzance and there was only ever going to be one way to spend it - join me onboard the Scillonian III as we set sail the the islands beyond Land's End - The Isles of Scilly. Is it worth it for a day trip? Is this the best way to get there and back again? I'll do my best to answer both those questions while giving you a wee look around, onboard and on shore...

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for CZcams Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Thanks Steve. I used to live on St Martin's Isles of Scilly and had to leave when I was 24in 1987 . I was going to marry a girl who lived on the island but I couldn't find anywhere to make a living and all the properties were sold to rich people from London. Being on Scillonian money is being on your arse in those days . Unless you can have an income from renting to tourists. The cheapest property in 1985 was about £85000 and that was with a short 20 year lease. Nobody owns a house on St Martin's there all Charlie / William's now . I didn't stay with my fiancee as she needed to help her father there .Now she lives near Portsmouth so I hear . I moved to South Wales near the sea and met a Welsh lady . I miss the islands and now I'm 60 and retired I will make it a point next year to take a trip . Thanks for bringing back memories 👍 Anyway i sailed on Scillonian 3 a month after she started service. She was made 17th May 1977 and i was only 14 at the time.

Yes the Isles of silly are part of Cornwall.
Owned by the duchy of Cornwall king Charles and the The Dorrien-Smith family on Tesco.
I grew up on the Isles of Scilly on st Mary's where my father was the dentist for more than 25 years- Barrie Fairest 1.
He was also in charge of the fire brigade on the island as well.
I'm glad that you got to see these beautiful Islands, however, to appreciate these beautiful Islands in all their glory you need to spend at least 7 days there.
If you want a good pint and good food if you ever visit the islands again, I can recommend the Mermaid pub just on the left-hand side as you turn into hugh town off the Quay from the scillonian.
It's good to see that you took a good long walk to old town add to the garrison with the famous castle.
Hope you had a really good day my friend.
    Safe travels my friend 🙏

My wife and I had a wonderful holiday on Scilly 50+ years ago - it's quite amazing how little it has changed. In a day you could only see St Mary's, but you packed a lot in. The other islands are equally memorable. It is paradise in good weather, but a trip on Scillonian in a gale or on a heavy sea would also leave a lifelong memory. Brilliant piece, many thanks.

For the well heeled, the trip by air taking 20 minutes, cost 2 guineas!

Great to see this old ship still going strong! When I was a toddler, my parents took me on a vacation to the Scillies. The horn of the ship must have made an impression on me, because back home I would occasionally let out a loud hoooonk and my dad would answer with "Scillonian three!".

Sailed on the Scillonian II for a day trip back in 1962, (I was only 10!). Managed to squeeze in a trip to Tresco and the fabulous gardens. In 1985 I (now married!) returned for a week's holiday based in accommodation at the famous Kavorna Bakery, Hugh Town, St. Mary's. This time sailing, as you did, Steve, on Scillonian III which was running all those years ago.
Fascinating trips to several of the off Islands during the week, including dipping in a very cold May sea off St Martin's. It seems that Vic's tours round St. Mary's on the vintage bus may no longer be there, because otherwise you would have been on it!
Great video Steve, with a bit of nostalgia for us. Plenty more for you to discover on your next visit!

All the islands are unique and have their own atmosphere. St Mary’s quintessential English. Bryher, rugged and rough, Tresco is beguiling and lush, St Martin’s with its silver white sands very tropical. St Agnes is almost Cornish and has Gugh attached at low tide.
The islands are very bewitching and not forgetting the Sunset over Sampson. Magical

For years as a child I holidayed with the Goddards’ in Middletown St Martins in a chalet with a remote Elsan loo at the bottom of a shared lawn.
They were golden times and with only about 6 miles around the island, all beaches were visited from Great bay to parpitch and the old quay beach.
I first rowed a gig there.
Many years later I took my children there and to my amazement the magic was still there and the best family holidays we had were all on St Martins although we had to camp!
A very very special bit of England and still relatively unspoiled although sadly buildings are starting to appear more quickly it seems.

Brought back nemories of a couple of Christmas/New Years holidays with Scouting friends, super rented accomodation not tents! The Mermaid Pub was packed, so were the 2 others nearby The off-islands are georgeous too. Lovely video, thanks for the memories Steve. Happy travelling, await your next adventure!

Very picture sque . You realy get about , I wonder how many miles a year you do. Your quite right , while we still can it's an amazing world we live in. I remember the ferry's you had to be winched on. Oban had link span from 1974 but the small isles had winch for cars till the 80s :)

One of the best holidays my wife and I ever had, camping on the Garrison campsite summer 1979.....ish! We also visted Tresco, the Abbey Gardens and both Old and New Grimsby. Well we had to really; considering we are from the larger of the two Grimsby's in Lincolnshire. Then onto St. Agnes and St. Martins but the latter was almost deserted so we didn't stay there very long and I think we will give the other Grimsby in Ontario a miss. However we did return during a 'round Britain cruise' a few years but it was very crowded so I was pleased we had seen it when it wasn't so busy. It was a wonderful place!!

Great video showing the Scillonian and you had a fantastic crossing!
If you feel St Mary's is like another world you need to visit the off islands, they're a whole other world.
Stay on an off island, (if you can find accommodation), it'll feel really special with your other half.

All those islands have their own character, Steve - I've stayed in a self-contained cottage, B&B and a hotel in the IoS (minimum 7 nights) and walked all the inhabited islands. Surely one of the highlights of Britain! Great to see you give it the once over - The only time that I've booked to fly, I ended up on The Scillonian due to stormy conditions - scary emergency landing into Newquay, but keep returning to IoS

Brilliant video as ever, Steve. I was corrected by a local once and told we’d sailed across the Celtic Sea, not the Atlantic. To be honest, who cares: it’s a great trip whichever. The other thing that might bring you back and use the skybus is that you can leave from Lands End Airport (Yes it really exists! And is the skybus hub). Add to which those planes are around 40 years old now. Magical trip 😁

This was fantastic, as always, and is absolutely one of my top five Steve Marsh videos. It was spectacular. Palm trees and seal watching tours. How can it get any better. Is that island mostly a tourist destination or does it have another industry? Fishing or something? So beautiful and clean, very quiet. Excellent Steve, really excellent. 🤩

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  Před 8 měsíci +2

Aww thanks so much! It was a fun video to make too, but I was just a bit short on time and energy! Good question, despite my flying visit, I have little knowledge of their main industries at all, but one thing I did notice - everyone I met who lives there certainly seem to enjoy it!

    • @davidjones332
      @davidjones332 Před 8 měsíci +1

The main industry used to be the export of flowers, thanks to the very mild climate. Unfortunately the increasing imports of hothouse-grown flowers trucked in from Europe has badly damaged that trade.

I have been on the ship twice for week long holidays back in the 1980's/90s, the first time I had bad seasickness as the vessel has a shallow draft to go between the islands. The first visit I went by British Alrways helicopter from Penzance and had more time for a day trip so went to the gardens on Tresco. The boat trips to the off islands are the best part of a holiday, loved St Agnes and a trip out to the Bishop Rock lighthouse when it still had resident keepers.Good video as ever Steve.
