      Try starting with a gurgle and moving your tongue around until you make some progress to exercise 4. Then follow the video. Start with laying down completely. I just did this and after 8 months I can do the closed mouth trill, one step from the alveolar trill.

      This is an amazing tutorial!
      Wonderful thorough breakdown.
      But I STILL can’t do it!
      I can “tap” trill (I get about 3 taps each time).
      When I do the “shh” exercise, I’ve tried every possible combination of pressure, airflow and tongue position and shape that I can conjure up! Not even a slight trill at the tip.. ever! The “sides” will actually trill occasionally, but never the tip. Oh well.. I might keep trying, but at this point, it seems pretty hopeless. But it’s not the end of the world! I’m getting by pretty well with the “tap”. And maybe one of these days..

    • @damienliles5387
      @damienliles5387 Před 4 lety +26

      Yes, that tip was excellent! Lying back seemed to free up any additional upward tension in the tongue and help curl the tip back that extra bit. I found it particularly useful to focus on the "Library 'shhh'" position, as it's different from the standard "sh" (e.g. "she", "shell", "shock"), where the lips are spread thin. The "shhh" you use in libraries has very rounded lips, and you're projecting the sound much further (as if to reach the ears of a distant person who needs to be silenced). Try doing the "Library 'shhh'" while laying back, find the ideal tongue position to make it flutter, then turn on your vocal cords.

    Thanks for this. I never have been able to successfully roll my R's, and I assumed I wouldn't be able to. My tongue is less nimble than most people's tongues - I had surgery as a baby to remove skin from below my tongue so that I could use it as much as I can, and while I can make pretty much any sound my tongue is a bit more limited in its range of motion. Yet this lesson does seem to help - I can't really roll my R's properly yet, but I'm doing better just after a little bit of practice. I'll try practicing it a few more times on different days and see how it goes. I don't particularly mind if I can roll my R's in terms of learning languages such as Spanish, but I do want to have the technique available for speech in general. I have a very deep voice that others have said is quite charismatic, but I realized lately that I don't really take full advantage of it - so even exercises like this I feel could be useful to me.

    I am pretty sure this closed tongue trill is just a uvular trill in which the vibration of the tonge against the alveolar ridge or palate is misinterpreted as the origin of the sound, when it is merely a side effect of the uvular trill. That's why there is clear change in sound when you switch into the alveolar sound. The involved aerodynamics are completely different.

    I still can’t even do step 4 but I did find something that helped me start to get my tongue to almost do it. I have a tooth growing in at the moment and all the air was just escaping through the gap. I tried filling the gap with the wax they give you for braces and I could sort of vibrate my tongue, not quite trilling but a huge improvement.
    Update (next day): I can do step 4 now. Being able to feel how it feels to flow the air properly helped a lot and I can now do it without the wax.

Hopefully this helps someone else but I had my tongue in the position for the aveolar trill on my ridge and trilled my lips. I am a Chinese and I think I kind of get it after a few days practice. Thank you. To add on, for Cantonese native speaker, I think another beginning trick to get the tongue vibrating is to flow the air like spitting from the throat. This may let thr tongue relax. The spitting motion will slowly fade out when you are more confident.

There's another one of a young woman doing a "Ha-Rarrrr" technique that helped a lot too, but watching the others is useful as well. It did not just *click*. I have a narrow palate so that didn't help. A lot of times I felt I had it and then had trouble again. I practiced for a long time until I learned by feel how to make the air flow just right to get tongue tip to trill, then to add sound. I'm working on AH-rrrr now!

    My epiphany came at 20 and then again in slo-mo at 41 seconds. And it's not about the tongue and the alveolar ridge at all. Any dummy can put the tip of their tongue there. No - for me it was all about the placement of the back of the tongue. Have a look at 41 secs and you'll see how the back of the tongue lifts. This has the effect of directing the air flow across the tongue. As soon as I did this I was purring like a cat. I was trilling!!

    I can get the back of my tongue to trill but not the front. Having trouble figuring out what is meant by the "blade" of the tongue. I also keep looking up alveolar ridge and it says that's basically the gums or the part of your mouth that supports/holds your teeth in place? Wish I could find better pictures and descriptions of these things but google is letting me down.

    I truly believe it's not possible for everyone. I've grown in a Puerto Rican family, I know a bit of Spanish, but I physically cannot get the rolled R and I've been trying for a decade now. Closed mouth I can get some sort of vibration in the tongue going, but it doesn't sound anywhere near the one in the video. As soon as I open my mouth, no more tongue vibration, my throat tries to take over the vibration. I'm trying to get the word "perro" or "carro" but I can't do the "ro" shape while keeping my tongue up top, it automatically lays down and curls. I'm great at saying it with a ovular trill though.

      @@PCs454 I can do it now! But I didn't get it from doing what this video says. I got it from doing tongue exercises aimed to strengthen and stretch the tongue. I found them from various different videos. I did them for about a week every single day. Alongside that I practiced saying vorrei but split into two parts, so vor rei really fast. Eventually, after a LOT of practicing, my tongue started to flap one more time than usual. So I kept going until the trill got longer and longer. Now, I can do it until I run out of breath. Now, I'm still practicing, but with different combinations of sounds together. It's super frustrating and annoying, believe me I understand that, but you really do just have to keep practicing until it happens. Unless you're tongue tied, you CAN do it

      @@PCs454 You're not making an R sound when you trill, if you try to make an R sound it won't work. Your tongue is vibrating against wind and the roof of your mouth. You need to do the tongue exercises because you're probably tensing it up too much, that's what I was doing. If you can't do the alveolar tap then you need to learn how to do that first
