How to TRILL your R in Spanish

  • To trill the Spanish R is tricky, but here, I’ll teach you great methods to start trilling your R’s in Spanish as soon as you finished watching the video.
    One of the trickiest sounds in Spanish is the “R”. Spanish gets two different “R” sounds, the soft “R”, “la ere” and the strong “R”, “la erre”.
    In this lesson you’ll learn when you should use each one, the rules in writing and a way to recognize how you should be pronouncing the “R” you come across in reading and while speaking.
    Also, I’ll teach you how to trill your “R” in Spanish. What your tongue has to do in order to produce the sound just like a native speaker does.
    Don’t miss a great new technique that may help your brain to figure out how to trill the Spanish R naturally by repetition.
    And at the end of the lesson I’m teaching you a tongue twister to get your practice to the next level.

    What if due to the anatomy of my mouth or something ... My tongues is not very long so for example if I tried to relax it but stick it out of my mouth, I can't stick it that far out... Could that make this difficult to produce this sound because I can't bend it over and touch the roof of my palette without actually tucking it deep in the back of my mouth...?
    I have just come back from my second 8 months spent in Colombia 🇨🇴❤️ and I love languages and excel very fast in them (never a class in Spanish) but my intermediate French helps me a lot as it is so similar to Spanish.... But I still can't produce this sound. 🤭😞 Que pena!

      Hola Philip.
      You don’t need to stick it out of your mouth, if you do that you’ll be releasing so much air and therefore you won’t be able to make the vibrations we’re looking for.
      As long as your tongue can touch the back of your upper teeth, you’re good. We don’t bend it over deep back of our mouth.

    I’m not sure if I’m doing it right. For the soft R I just use the soft d / t sound (like in butter), and my strong Rs sound like “pe ththth o” (Perro). It vibrates kind of well but I can’t get the R sound. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

    • @SpeakSpanishWithPaula
      @SpeakSpanishWithPaula  Před 4 lety +3

      Lensiax You got the soft R. As for the strong one, if you feel that sounds like the “TH” then you probably are not pushing your tongue against the upper teeth. Put the tongue behind your upper teeth, then flap it and that’s when you need to allow the air to come through. Try this combination “Pe” + “run in English without the “n” sound”, it’s a way to begin but definitely it’ll sound better than a “TH”. Or just try to imitate the sound a child would make while playing with motorcycles. I hope it helps. Keep me updated 😉

      Speak Spanish With Paula Thank you for the reply! I feel as if my soft R sometimes sounds a little too much like a d (When I say an infinitive verb, it will sometimes sound like I’m saying the ustedes command form Ex: Hablar -> Hablad) Its almost as if I have to make the d suuper silent. I’ve been trying it in the mirror to see where my tongue ends up and I think its getting better. what do you mean when you say “Pe” + “run”? Thanks for the advice, I’m going to try moving my tongue.

      @SpeakSpanishWithPaula  Před 4 lety +1

      Lensiax I was trying to help you to pronounce the word “perro”. Sometimes I ask my students to say “run” (in English) without “n” and the result is closer to the strong R in Spanish, that’s why I told you to try it. It’s tricky to explain in a comment. Keep it up and you’ll get there!! 👍🏻

      Speak Spanish With Paula Okay so I’m not sure if I’m starting from the right place. I don’t seem to have trouble getting a rolling sound but it doesn’t make an “r” type sound. The word perro still sounds like “per-tho” with a trill on the th. I tried doing the run with out the “n” but It sounds like an english R.

    Okay so, I know how to do these, I never had any problem with the distinction between soft and hard. BUT I just CANNOT pronounce words in which dental consonants follow the r. My Spanish boyfriend has been trying to teach me for so long and I've been watching so many videos but no success. Maybe it's not a common problem? Does anyone also have trouble saying "mierda" properly when they really want to in this situation? 😂

    Thank you for the useful video presented by a charming person. There are 2 technical problems. 1) The prerecorded bland background music is distracting. 2) The EXCESSIVE scene transitions are very amateurish. Just because you can do all kinds of transitions does not mean you have to use them.
