Some countries banned homework, because they know kids should spend that time with family and friends and playing, and that if a kid doesn't know what they're doing and do it wrong, then they aren't learning.

    @dcbandnerd Před 5 lety +406

The bit toward the end where they're talking about "when am I going to use this" broke my heart. It is absolutely a legit question and when authority figures scoff at that, it shows that they either can't give the kids a straight answer or they've become so immersed in their field of study that everything else in life has fallen to the wayside. Having access to a public education is a good thing and it should be an engaging experience for people of all ages but so many factors alienate students from that education and often leave them unprepared for adulthood.

    • @jameslail6930
      @jameslail6930 Před 4 lety +28

      Very true.
I'm in college now, studying to be a teacher. And....a big part of that is because a lot of times, I felt the achool system had....for lack of a better term, failed me. I was bullied to the point of a kid banging my head against a table, discouraged from pursuing music by my BAND TEACHER, and whenever I told math or science teachers my plans to be an author, they'd scoff at me. Same acoff whenever I asked how what we learned would be applicable.
Like....I.think that a baseline of classes should be given to every student, give basic knowledge. But after a certain point, kids should be able to pursue whatever they want to do. Even in college, my ADVISOR tried to get me to change majors THE FIRST TIME I MET HER!!!
So yeah...it honestly is really heartbreaking that so many classes like this go on. And when ever I have my own class and I'm asked this question, I'll answer 'whatever you want to'. Even if tje kid just hates my class amd.wanta to.do.something else. Because teachers are supposed to.inspire passion, not induct followers.

    • @pointpoint8445
      @pointpoint8445 Před 3 lety +8

Yeah, its a very brushed away question that could be answered and give hope to a lot of teenagers. But adults don’t want to go through the process of talking which is good subjects and how it helps and realize that not everyone needs to Trigonometry, all of Physics, etc.
      But change isn’t always accepted.

    • @Aplesedjr
      @Aplesedjr Před 3 lety +2

To be fair, even if there was a completely reasonable and understandable answer to that question that every teacher could easily retort with, how many students would accept it? Especially in high school, when students have been doing what amounts to the same thing for around 10 years. Most teenagers have become very jaded with the whole experience at that point, and it’s not exactly realistic to expect anyone who has been made to do something for 10+ years to accept the idea that it was good for them.

In Highschool, I had a project where I was partnered with this girl. Long story short: I was doing pretty much everything (terribly, mind ya) and didn't have enough time/resources between this and two other projects for classes to "redo this entire left side of the poster-board." As the date to the expo of everyone's projects loomed overhead, I took a big risk and stole my own project from the back of the room and snuck it home and burnt it.
Expo day came and I asked "hey, sir, have you seen our project?"
"No. Huh, that's strange. I know I saw you two working on it."
(A good fifteen minutes of searching both rooms)
"Huh... well, I'm sorry kids. I guess someone might've snuck out your poster-board and used it. Tell ya what, why don't you help out with me managing the other classes during the event today and I'll just give you both a passing grade."
Needless to say, I'm eternally grateful for this teacher and am still sorry I had to resort to such an act. But hey, that's life. Gotta get creative if ya don't wanna fail, eh?

    School Story
Okay so growing up with ADHD begets you a lot of impatient people yelling at you for not being able to control your brain. My kindergarten teacher wrote countless letters to my mom about how horrible of a student I was because I wouldn't pay attention. And then one time my mom, my teacher and some other faculty members were having a meeting where my mom brought attention to the things my teacher said about me. My teacher denied that she said anything, and without missing a beat my mom pulled out the letters and fucking passed them around. Near the end of that year, that teacher pulled me aside and told me that if I didn't "fix" myself, I would never be accepted by anyone.
Still trying to figure out what's broken. Fuck that bitch.

It's both concerning and oddly comforting to hear that there's horrid teachers that everyone had experiences with.
I was called stupid in front of the class, was talked shit about to the other classmates whenever I stayed home, never did anything when I was being bullied and said nothing when I was called a low life. She could be all smiles and encouragement with others, but she was just utter disappointment and scowls with me. I couldn't understand the math and so she kept kids who didn't finish their homework after school. She would keep me behind for HOURS, until it got dark, and she'd yell and scream at my face about directions, which as a scared 6th grader, of course I didn't retain any of that shit, everyday after school, no matter if I was bawling my eyes out. I was told that I'd let down my family and friends, that I already am by failing and that my family gave up on me, said that I kept her from her own family cause she, on her own, kept me at school. She had gotten mad at ME for being CUT by another kid who broke and sharpened their pen, cause I didn't tell her due to how deathly afraid of her.
Floating through the best I can of senior year and years of therapy, I can safely say fuck you, Mrs. Chu, big ol fuck you
Hope everyone can work through their own experiences, sorry if you read through this much!

I grew up with rreeaaally terrible teachers, nearly identical to what Arin and Dan have experienced. To anyone who is going through a hard time or has had it in the past...school is NOT the end of be all. You can still become a successful, smart, happy, and good contribution to society without your old peers.
I was told, "drawing and doodling will get you nowhere in life" and was belittled by my teachers who had the consideration of a hand grenade. Guess what? I achieved First-Class honours in my animation degree. Won festival and competition prizes. As of writing this, working for an animation studio on a tv series that is airing. Finally, just got 100k subs and received my silver play button.
There are tons of successful people who didn't have a good experience with school. Arin, Dan and the Grump team are amazing examples. They've gone through the ups and downs in life. Now they're like the happiest people I know.
You can do it, or if you are down atm...raise up and prove those people wrong.

I’m a freshmen rn. I have special needs which affect my fine motor skills, which means my hands don’t work as well as everyone else’s and because of it I have bad handwriting. I went to years of occupational therapy to make it even legible. So like two weeks ago my Spanish teacher finds a worksheet with no name. She said it had bad handwriting so it had to be a boys. Naturally everyone starts to tell her she’s wrong and that wasn’t cool. But instead of stopping she keeps going. She goes to the front of class while we’re all working and says girls just always have better hand writing and boys have sucky handwriting. I sit at the front and she walks over to my desk and grabs my sheet in the middle of working and shows it off to the whole class. Me being the timid person I am just go “thanks for calling me out like that” very quietly. Eventually she stops and I’m super embarrassed, no one laughed or anything but it was still just the worst thing to do to a student with special needs. Luckily my friend in the class got super pissed once I told him and that made me feel better that he cared.

I never said anything because I didn't want to be a nuisance, and luckily, no one ever commented on me. I'm always told my handwriting's neat because I'm slow enough I can actually focus on it. When I was in second grade, I'll never forget, my teacher Mrs. Dunn was a wicked woman. She looooved picking favorites, and she made it obvious to everyone who was "that kid" each year. When I had her, she picked this girl named Sarah. Now, Sarah was such a nice girl, but since Mrs. Dunn treated her like royalty, everyone was super mean to her. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. I hate cake and cupcakes, not because I don't like the taste, but because it's too sweet and it makes me nauseous. One day, it was some kid's birthday and they brought in cupcakes for the whole class, and when they came to me I politely declined, saying something like, "Oh, I don't like cupcakes. Thanks though, you can enjoy that one yourself, it's your birthday anyways." Of course Mrs. Dunn would have none of that, so she told me it was _rude_ to decline. I told her that frosting makes me nauseous, and she said "scrape it off, then." By this point I was really fed up with her, so I ate the whole thing as fast as I could with the frosting and all. Soon after, when class had proceeded, I threw up EVERYWHERE. She tried claiming that I stuck my fingers down my throat just to spite her, but everyone around me vouched for me. She said I wasn't allowed to go to the nurse but I just walked right out of the classroom anyways. I've never been one to talk back to teachers, but I made an exception just this once, and when I left I remember looking her dead in the eyes and saying, "I told you so." The nurse called my parents to come pick me up, and when I left I felt so good about myself. In second grade you're what, 7? I think it's still one of my best moments.

It’s honestly not a students fault, teachers need to have some more respect for kids and understand that we’re growing up and don’t know everything and have to deal with different types of social pressures than they do as adults. It’s honestly kinda sad and I wish teachers had to take a yearly test or survey or something where they have to relearn how to engage with students and be more understanding.

In the 3rd grade, I wrote a little book about a ice cube escaping a freezer and melting. It was a bunch of line paper stapled together. I spent about a week working on it which for a kid is a long time. When I finished my teacher asked me what it was and I explained it to her. She asked if she could read it to the whole class and I said yes thinking she would praise me for being creative. She read it to the class and then began to actually review it. She went off about how the protagonist had no personality, there was no real story, no real setting, and how “simple” the language in it was. She then threw it away in front of the whole class and said “You should spend your free time doing something productive instead of being something you’re not.”
Awful lady. Luckily the school year was about over so I didn’t have to deal with her anymore.

I think my most traumatizing memory was in 4th grade, I was 9 years old, and whenever I did a test I would make a drawing for my teacher in the back of the paper, and they were really nice about it, thanking me and saying how talented I was and all that stuff. So one day I was finishing my math test and I thought "well, let's make a drawing! Why not?" And as soon as my math teacher passed to get the tests, and she saw the drawing, she just started screaming at me, about how a test is something serious and whatever, in front of everyone, and they just started laughing at me. Thinking about it, yeah you probably shouldn't draw on tests, but my other teachers were so nice about it. And I guess my math teacher was right on confronting me, but not in front of everyone, and screaming at me. I never felt so embarrassed

    Story:
I was in the fourth grade and I had ADHD, which made me extremely inattentive in class while also being extremely hyperactive. My teacher, who I believe was about 50 years old, apparently either didn't understand or believe that I had ADHD, and would treat me like complete shit. She would constantly put me at the front of the class and scream at me, calling me words like "retarded" and "stupid dumbass" and she said I would never be anything. And she would intentionally give me bad grades, even when my parents proofread my work. One day, when my parents were fed up with me not doing some of my work, my mom went to her classroom to see if I could do the work as extra work for home. Her response was "us teachers here do not like to send work home" which, btw, is a fucking lie "because we do not want out student's parents to do their work for them"...while my mom was asking for her to give me the work that I wasn't doing in her class. After that she was "retiring" but she was most definitely being kick out of the school.

The teacher started to say stuff like “she’s hiding (her assignment) in potted plants” to my mom. I literally had no idea where the worksheet went, I thought an unnamed one was mine but it wasn’t and it was my friend’s. Then, I was at church last year and this lady (who was married to the interim pastor) had the AUDACITY to be like “oh yeah we had fun together” when she made light of me being distraught over losing an assignment??? And didn’t try to help me when I was confused?? And mind you I had undiagnosed ADHD as well and didn’t really have the best attention span and was always thinking about other things than school, also the first ADHD counselor I went to called me “it” one time and didn’t refer to me by my name.

I almost died of electrocution when I was in high school.
So, this was about sophomore year for me. My high school was not originally built as a school, but was instead an old news station for, like, Channel 5 or something, and that went bankrupt, so it was then converted into a charter school that focused on filmmaking. As such, the building wasn't exactly designed with the safety and wellbeing of children and teenagers in mind.
So, one day, my science teacher, who was this sweet old British lady who everyone loved, takes us all down into the basement to germinate some seeds by taking them and putting them in a sandwich of, like, wet newspaper and leaves, and you need to have darkness and water for that to work, or something.
The place is really musty and creepy, it's dimly lit by, like, one lightbulb, it's covered in dust and debris and old broken computers and shit, and there's metal support beams on the ceiling and stuff, which you would NEVER see in a real high school. Now, because this was, essentially, a film school, we kinda used that to our advantage a lot of the time and used it for the set of, like, ALIEN-esque horror movies.
Anyway, I'm done with my seed project, so I'm just standing around, waiting for everyone else to finish, with my hands in my pockets, twiddling my thumbs, when something catches my eye; over in the corner, I see this giant ribbed metal tube full of exposed wires hanging from the ceiling and hovering just inches from the ground. I'd just recently had another science class teach us about how electricity likes to travel towards the ground, and for that reason, if a wire is near the ground and it arcs, that means it's live. With that in mind, looking at this tube full of wires, I concluded that, because it wasn't arcing or even making a sound, it wasn't live.
So I approach it out of curiosity, and I decide, in my infinite wisdom, to pick the damn thing up. I'm looking at it, moving it around, and stuff, and for WHATEVER reason, I start lifting it to the ceiling, towards those metal fucking support beams I talked about earlier.
And then... I honestly don't know how I got out of this. I don't know if it was divine intervention, magnetism pulling it upwards, or me having some kind of instinct kick in and flinching, but my fingers disconnected from the metal mere MILLISECONDS before the live wires arced the biggest fucking arc I've ever seen in my life. Maybe it started vibrating and spooked me, I dunno. If I hadn't dropped it in that moment, I would be dead, and I'll tell you why in a second.
Meanwhile, I'm on the floor, heart racing, having just narrowly escaped death, and everybody's crowding around me like "Oh my God, are you okay?" And I'm just kinda stunned and chuckling "yeah, I'm fine" My hair was standing on end, it was crazy!!! I'm not sure if paramedics were called, but it was a huge commotion.
That's not even the funniest part. We go back upstairs, and there are kids running around in the halls panicking, clearly upset, and I'm like wtf; it's at this point that I learned that that tube contained wires that were literally connected to every system in the school, and when it arced, the entire building lost power for about a minute, causing everyone who was on a computer to lose progress on their projects.
And that's how I got the name Electro for the last 2 years of high school

My worst school memory was when I was in 8th grade and I was in an advanced English class. My mom just became an English teacher herself at the time and I had told her about how my English teacher professed that his classes had the highest writing scores in the annual state standardized test. So she sent him an email saying she wanted to sit in on one of his classes, she didn’t specify which class because she wanted to arrange it with him first. So one day, I’m sitting in class after lunch and my English teacher asks me “Hey, would you like to hear something embarrassing about yourself?” And of course I was shocked because I didn’t know what he had on me, I didn’t even know my mom had sent him that email. So I said “Uh, no??” Then he said “okay, then get out of the class and wait till I’m done”. So I’m forced to get up, because I didn’t know what he would do if I were to defy him and I had never been in a situation like that before. So, I sit outside of the class while he proceeds to tell the whole class that my “mommy” was going to come sit in on our class and observe. I only find this out after I beg my best friend to tell me what he said after I walked back in and the whole class was laughing at me.
I don’t know why he had it out for me. I was an A student, and I never did anything wrong besides talk to my best friend. I have hearing problems so maybe he thought I wasn’t paying attention although that was on my record.
Some teachers are just awful for no reason. I wonder if he ever felt proud that he deliberately humiliated a 13 year old.

I never knew what happened to him. I never told my mom about it until I finally broke on the last day of school when I started to cry out of pure relief that I wouldn't have to sit in his class and be harassed by him. My mom at the time was LIVID, and she talked to principal about it and the principal personally apologized to me saying she wish she could have done something more about it had I come clean sooner.

We had to do this project in 8th grade. It's called expo. idk if anyone else had to do it, but it was utter bullshit. We had to pick a topic, write a 5 page essay, and make a poster board for it too. I did the mental health of touring musicians. In order to do the essay we needed to interview someone. Every local musician I contacted ignored me, baby talked me, made a date and time and never did it, or set the interview up only to tell me they couldn't help me at all. basically just wasted my time. So I tried to interview my schools music teacher cause he had apparently did some touring. Sounds easy. Here's the catch. He was in Switzerland... I had to email his wife who was also a music teacher. She asked me to email her the questions so she could email them to him. So I did, cause I'm a good 13 year old. She doesn't respond for over a week. I'm thinking she sent them and shit. She calls me out of gym, god bless. And yells at me because I didn't send an email REMINDING HER to send the email and that not doing that was UNPROFESSIONAL!! She goes on to say she hasn't spoken to her husband in weeks and all that bull. We only worked on the project on Thursdays. That last Thursday, I was sick. Do you really think I wanna remind a grown women to do something very simple when I'm home sick? I'm sorry my sickness is unprofessional. But so isn't bringing your relationship into the work space and complaining about it to a student? To say the least, I understood why he was in Switzerland.

When I was three, I had to go to a sorta pre-pre-school for a week because I'd only recently started talking and they were worried I wouldn't be able to communicate properly. It was my first time being around kids my own age, so naturally I was excited and tried to make friends. Obviously that led to talking in class. But I was three; of course the teacher would understand, or at least take it easy. No. First offense, every day for that week, heavily scolded and sent outside for the rest of the day. My mom always came to get me and found me in tears. When she finally confronted the teacher, she explained that I was a complete nuisance and called me and the only two friends I'd managed to make "The Bad Blond Boys." She'd known us for a week, and she gave a group of toddlers a title that blatantly hostile. My parents were furious and demanded I be put in a different class. The next week, everything went perfectly with the new teacher. But the damage was done. I was sent there to make sure I was ready to communicate, but since that's what got me in trouble, I ended up having a mental block with it. To this day, conversating in any way is one of my greatest challenges, along with making friends. All cuz some bitch thought it was her place to decide a toddler she was supposed to prepare for pre-school, a primarily social environment, needed to be scolded and punished for being too talkative, when I sure as hell wasn't.
Also just fuck American schools in general. They're all so focused on standardized testing and raising automatons that they write off everything else as worthless. This one time in high school I accidentally snitched on my friend while he was watching Sonic porn on his Macbook....
    Let me explain...
My high school had this program (don't know if it does anymore) where anyone above freshman level would be given a Macbook Pro to do work on.
Normally in class the schools WiFi would have several sites blocked like CZcams, Reddit, Facebook, etc. But everybody found a way around that just by putting an S in front of the P in http.
Real amateur hour on the schools part.
Anyway, once we found out how to do this, the computers were basically jailbroken and we could go anywhere we wanted.
I personally used it for CZcams and Newgrounds, but there were a good number of people who got busted for looking at porn on the dang things.
One day as I'm waiting for the bus to go home, I see my friend William almost pressing his face against the screen.
So I get curious as to what he's watching, and take a peek from over his shoulder.
And I managed to catch a quick glance of Rouge the Bat getting pounded by Knuckles before he quickly closed the page and asked me how I'm doing I'm a slightly annoyed voice.
I just give him a devilish smirk and ask him what he was doing, to which he replied with "research for a paper."
I responded with "If the teachers catch you looking at that shit, it may be last paper you write here."
And he got that hot red wash of shame, closed his laptop and told me he'd see me tomorrow.
I thought it was funny at first, so funny in fact that I didn't notice the teacher not 10 feet away from me who was secretly listening to the entire thing.
Cut to the next day when William came back, and his laptop was confiscated by the school and he couldn't use it for the rest of the month.
So because I called out my friend for looking at Sonic porn on his computer, I accidentally got his laptop taken away because I just happened to call him out within earshot of a teacher.

My teacher saw it and she took it, because we weren’t allowed to take toys to school per the policy. Sad to say, I never saw that toy again. Teacher never told my parents and they never knew that they were supposed to because she had lied and told me they said they didn’t want it back.
Also in 9th grade I had a teacher who told me he didn’t think I’d ever make it for anything and that I should give up. He walked up to me when I got my diploma and apologized to me for saying so, because he was proud I did it against all belief.

That reminds me of this one time I was in 3rd grade. I had this Yoshi plush that acted like a backpack clip, but after a while, I discovered that I can insert a pencil into the plushie's hand (the hand was folded) and that was how I would have an extra pencil with me. I would just let Yoshi hold that extra pencil if I needed it. Until that one day when my history teacher saw that I grabbed a pencil from Yoshi. She flat out told me to go to my homeroom and then turn a card (You know those card things that elementary schools do). But as I was gone, she took off Yoshi and put it on a shelf, where I couldn't reach it. When class ended, she told me that she wouldn't return it and to not ask for it ever. My card was already at yellow and once it was red I would be sent home. I was too much of a wuss to just straight up ask for Yoshi again, so I stayed silent. Yoshi is probably still up there, heck, I even know that the teacher still works at that same elementary school. Sometimes I wish I could just break in after 8 years and steal it back, just to avenge 8 year old me.

When I was in elementary school, my arts teacher used to really discourage me from drawing and always praised everyone else no matter how good or shitty their work was whilst being hypercritical exclusively towards me.
One time when she sent us to take pictures of nature, I managed to snag a picture of a flower with pretty decent lighting and composition and showed it to her and all she told me was that I took it by accident. I ended up only getting a C in her class.
When my parents went to ask her what was going on with my grades, I was always blamed for being too shy and scared to participate in class, which was obviously going to happen at some point, considering that she was tearing apart everything a little kid did.
Fast forward to a couple of years later in high-school where I got referred to by both of my arts teachers as one of the most talented students they’ve ever had, although I still don’t believe them.
In the end, I lost all of my passion and interest in drawing and it also messed up my self-esteem a lot. I still never have the motivation to draw or finish any of my drawings even a decade later. But guess what? This wasn’t even the worst part: I actually got harassed by some other teacher in the same school and the bullying was even more soul-crushing. I guess they really had it out for me for some reason. Goes to show how much of an impact shitty adults can have on your life even from your childhood and how much of a hell hole school can be.
Anyways, please forgive the wall of text. Have a nice day!

I can relate to this- I was never the “favorite” kid in most classes, but towards high school, all of the “art kids” who decided to continue art seriously was essentially the teacher’s favorite. Everyone but me for some reason. She had some weird thing against me that I still cannot put a finger on since I’ve always been extremely polite and respectable towards her, even more so since I knew she didn’t like me for a reason I did not know. Either way, I will never forget when I told her the exciting news that I was accepted into a really good art school (as some of my peers achieved as well). Her response back to me was, “wow, I guess they’re just letting everyone in now, huh?” And I will never forget that.

For the most part my teachers were amazing. My kindergarten teacher moved to be a 3rd grade teacher and requested me to be in her class. But in the 6th grade. My home room teacher. Dear god. We had these math booklets we would keep in the back of the room. She said mine was gone and I must have done something with it. She said I'm just going to get a zero on everything we do in there because I lost it. Then she would watch the girl next to me copy all the work I did. She was very rude to me. When I was in the 7th grade, she was leaving. I decided I would try one last time to be nice. I plucked up some courage, walked over to her, and was like "Hey Mrs. _______, I just wanted to say goodbye!" She looked me right in the face, turned around, and left. Like that was literally the last straw. I had been far too nice. Flash forward 2 years, she got arrested for drugs and DUIs. One year later. Same thing. One more year later, same thing again. So honestly I don't feel bad for her. But then I had a rocking 7th grade math teacher. From then on out, I've had great math teachers.

So i went to my next class and we had to sit on the carpet so when i was going to sit down the pants ripped from the crotch area to upper leg area so my underwear were showing to the whole class and everyone laughed at me and i started bursting out in tears.

    School Story:
I never paid attention in my 6th grade literature class, so my brain learned to completely tune out my teacher's voice. The class was going over the chapter they just read (I read none of the book, so I honestly have no context), and all of a sudden they stopped talking and the class went silent looking around at eachother. I'm confused so I assume the teacher's probably calling me out for not paying attention. I look back at everyone awkwardly and slowly raise my hand to ask what's going on, but as soon as my hand is being raised the teacher's expression goes to almost...shame??? And she immediately says "I should have not said that then. I'm so sorry." And I just clocked out from that as soon as it passed, but everyone else kept looking at me and making me feel even more confused and awkward. The teacher pulled me aside as I was leaving and vaguely apologized. And my friend at the time tells me later "I didn't know you were adopted!" Or maybe I said something about my parents and she said something along "But I thought you were adopted", and I'm so stunned I shout "I'M NOT ADOPTED!!! WHY WOULD YOU THINK I'M ADOPTED??!?"
Well apparently she highly doubted anyone in our class was adopted (something to do with the main characters i think) and quickly did a poll, to which I raised my hand awkwardly to.
Everyone in my class was weirdly offended as I clarified I just wasn't paying attention. Although I felt so guilty, I never told the teacher, cuz it was just TOO awkward a conversation. I should have totally gone to Summer School for that class, cuz I didn't do nun nor learn a THING (just read my own books through it and ignored everyone), but the teacher let me pass somehow.

The Ross story about bullying holds very true In what he said at the end. While bullying when younger might seem the end of all that's right in your eyes then, it can become more than the bullies know. I was bullied a lot in my younger years, was told what a waste of life I was, how I'm never going to be anything useful in life. Well, years later... Here I am, now in my 50s, having been a successful manager of several stores, done look alike work for Paramount pictures, and a part time.voice actor. That scrawny kid they once picked on has grown to 6'4" and doesn't easily get moved... Literally, without some major force. I had this exact same thing happen to me while I was teaching (8th grade math btw). Two kids kept disrupting class with back and forth flatulence. I had an idea who they were, but anything you do or say to the kids as a teacher will just make you the enemy and cause the whole class to blow up as if the methane were thick and your words were a match.
So instead, I stopped teaching, walked to the front of the room and waited until everyone was quiet and looking at me and ripped the loudest fart I could. I was 13 once - I had learned how to cause farts to happen too. Of course, the kids blew up at this too, but the disgust they had for it quickly overwhelmed the laughter. I nodded to the two kids in the back and quietly told them we would talk about their potential rectal gas issues after class then went back to teaching.
They didn't do it again all year, at least not in my class.

I remember back in third grade, my class had an assignment on the grammar books. We were given 3 pictures (one of them would be blank so we had to guess what that missing picture is) and we had to write a short story that matched with the picture. The first picture was a girl setting up paint tools to paint the porch. The second was blank and the third, from my point of view, was that she was painting the floorboard. I wrote my story according to the pictures and turned it in.
Apparently, some students either didn't write the story or they half-assed it. The teacher made us redo it during recess, including me. I didn't know what was wrong with my story and my teacher didn't bother to tell me what's wrong. Not knowing what I did wrong, I pretty much rewrote the story without much changes. During our redo, the fourth-grade teacher came to visit and talked with my teacher. One of the conversations she was having, I swear she made sure that she was loud enough for all of us to hear but quiet enough to not make it obvious that she wanted us to hear it, "All these students right here, they're not going to the fourth grade. They're going to repeat this class next year."
Upon hearing that, I was silently crying throughout that day. It didn't help that when she collected our papers and she read mine, she just looked at me shaking her head with disappointment. Turns out the last picture, the girl was putting away her brushes but it was hard to tell.
Now I didn't repeat third-grade but man, was she an asshole

Ahem. So I actually asked the question "when am I going to use this?" In geometry. My math teacher proceeded to tell me that i would use it when I was working and making a rail for a staircase. Then some kids laughed. I thought that was just a stupid scenario. See, I didn't get the implication until a while ago. She was saying eventually I was gonna get a construction job and then I would use this. Jokes on her. She essentially said that to use this I'd have to fail at life and get a awful job so she teaching a failsafe. I win again Mrs. Moreno. I win again.

That's a bad teacher... the correct answer is "every time you open your eyes." Mathematics as a whole is a language, specifically the language of logic. Geometry is the logic of shapes. Walking through a door, you use geometry. Getting into a car, geometry. Quite literally any situation involving any tangible thing, you use geometry. The classes are there to help you understand your own thoughts, to assist in coming up with solutions to any problem.

I remember one time in 3rd class (around age 9-10) our teacher MsCarr, we would always annoy and she would yell etc. We came back in from lunch one day and she was frozen, sitting at her desk. So we were kind of weirded out at first, calling her name but she just sat straight backed staring right ahead. Then, when we noticed she wasn’t responding we started messing around to see if we could get her attention. No reaction. Screaming, yelling, we were on the tables but no reaction. Kids starting getting really freaked out and some left to find a teacher. Said teacher came in and saw MsCarr, then turned and ran for other teachers. They made her drink lucosade and eventually she came to, and she had no memory of what had happened.
I learned a year later, after I was diagnosed a type one diabetic, that MsCarr had diabetes as well and she had a low blood sugar that day and easily could have died. Isn’t life crazy.

since everyone's sharing their school stories, I thought I'd share mine.
first off, when I was in 6th grade, i was diagnosed with anxiety, and i had to see a therapist for it. it was so bad that i would shake and start sobbing if i had to stand in front of the class.
so in my science class, we had a project to do about tornado safety in each of the states and i think i got Kansas? anyway we were paired up and the girl i was working with wasn't doing like any work at all, i had to do about 80% of the work. the day it was due to be presented to the class, the project wasn't finished and i was super stressed because i knew this teacher had no empathy. a kid at my table who didn't speak AT ALL was forced to talk and present his project on the same day as this.
so, its almost time to present and my anxiety is through the roof. i start shaking and crying and eventually have one of the worst panic attacks ive ever had. i put my head down on the table, and my teacher saw this. she said to me, very loudly "um, EXCUSE ME. you are being incredibly rude. would you want someone to do that when you're presenting? pick up your head." so i do, and im grossly sobbing, probably really distracting tbh.
at the end of class, my teacher keeps me back. she says something like "you can present this to just us teachers instead okay?" and even though that's 100x worse i say okay because im terrified of her. when i go home i tell my dad, who calls her and tells her off. when he gets off the phone he tells me she said "oh yea i understand that they have anxiety, yeah i have ADHD i totally get it" ok sis whatever you say. when i get to class the next day she pulls me aside and tells me in a very low and threatening tone that we already figured something out and i didn't need to go and tell my dad.
a few years later we find out that i have Generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, and i have since 5th grade. sis. what r u doin

    School Story:
I had undiagnosed ADD until I was about 11 or 12. After figuring that out, I started trying new things to try to help my triggers and whatnot. I remember talking with my parents about sharing the fact that I had ADD with my teachers. I suffered from a lot of bullying so I told my teacher during lunch. The doctor I went to to get help with my ADD had given me a book to help me learn about ADD, and at the back of the book there was a paper you filled out. I gave it to my teacher. Now I didn't really like her because she was often unnecessarily mean to me because I tattled a lot.
She hands me the paper back and told me to hold on to it so she didn't lose it.
Turns out she thought that ADD was AUTISM. At my school, you didn't want to be in the special ed class because they had a kid who bit people and pulled hair (actual low functioning autism). So as soon as I figured out she thought I had autism, I told my mom. Essentislly the teacher started asking me if I wanted to do work in the resource room, where the biting kid often hung out. My mom, realizing the mistake, talked to the principal. She (the principal) agreed with my mom that I didn't need to be in with the autistic kids because I didn't have a major learning disorder (I could read and write and do math I just couldn't focus to save my life). My principal then set up a way for me to get work done (going to the reading room which was the library so I could focus in math) and having a "Tattle Journal".
I didn't like tattling, but a bunch of my classmates (in like 4th grade) were saying cuss words and talking about having sex, and I thought this was bad. I didn't understand because I didn't have a great understanding of what and what not to tell people on.
This principal, in a school obviously behind in newer educational ideas and concepts (keeping kids with ADD in the classroom), then NEVER looked at this journal. My mom asked her every week "what did Nate write this week" because she was genuinely interested to see too. My principal had an excuse. Every. Week. So my mom had me switch schools to a performing arts school and voila! I did significantly better in class, graduated in the top 5 in high school, and went to a good college.
Thanks mom for standing up for me 😆

I went to a private school for middle/high school and it was for kids with ADHD and Dyslexia and boy howdy did this school know how to do education RIGHT. My homeroom class for 6th grade was teaching us how to give a proper handshake and greeting, and why that was important, now and in the future, for establishing interpersonal and professional connections. (To this day I still get complimented on my firm handshake.) and because this school was basically *made up of the 'weird kids'* who all had horror stories of their shitty experiences being bullied by their past teachers or kids from their old schools, we all connected and managed to learn immense levels of empathy and understanding *of ourselves* and that we're not sick or broken at all, we just think of things differently. Metaphorically, Our non-neurotypical brains are Windows programs. Our brain runs great, can do all sorts of things, fast, quality framerate, BUT everyone else runs on Mac OS. The Educational system was designed for the Mac OS and thus, the Windows are going to have some problems trying to run, and thus look like really shitty programs, either it's jailbroken and looks pixaly or shitty or it's slow or just doesn't load at all, but that because we're running on a system we weren't designed for. When put in the proper Operating System environment that can run our program, we can keep up with the best of them. There's nothing broken about *you,* it truly is just the system.
That school has changed a lot since I left apparently, with a new headmaster, and just became a stupid preppy rich kid school for parents who are too ashamed that their kid "has problems" and puts them there to not feel guilty.

And a few months into the year she sat me with a girl and like we knew of each other, but never fucking talked 'cause our statuses in the social sphere are so different, but I digress. The girl ended up moving tables (our tables were two pairs of students at this point) and I never got seated with anyone else. I sat there by myself for like two months. And since my teacher taught out of the book, I was stuck just sitting there mindlessly. I gave up like two weeks into that seclusion and just started doing nothing. Not like it mattered, because all homework and work scores were purely participation -- meaning she didn't give a shit as long as you scribbled lines on a paper. I literally put question marks and 'I don't know's everywhere and she still stamped it off. It didn't help I didn't know anyone in the class, either. I just sat there helplessly.
