Arggggg, I forgot to explain in this vlog what "Humoresque" means and its history: Robert Schumann was actually the first to use this "Humoreske" term from the literary world for his music (this piece) in 1839 - 55 years before Dvorak's Humoresque!
It doesn't actually have to do with humor in the "haha" sense. He was inspired by his favorite author Jean Paul's 19th century concept of humor, which combined extreme opposite emotions, concepts and characters into one. He wrote to Clara Wieck about his "Humoresque" piece, "I have been at the piano all week, composing, writing, laughing and crying all at once. You will find this state of affairs nicely evoked in my opus 20 [Humoreske]."
Schumann was Brahms' mentor, Brahms was Dvorak's mentor... How I interpret Dvorak's Humoresque follows this line of tradition - melancholic music mixed of a little delight and a little nostalgia, but without separating either from each other.
Yes. Agreed. The first section must be lighter, more spirited. The second section provides the contrast and requires greater depth of expression. I urge you to listen to Joseph Hassid play the violin transcription.
This was very interesting, thanks :)
Great and simple sharing of knowledge. Ta
This is the best thing to happen, actually. Example: Without "them" challenging me and trying to intimidate me, I would have continued to only battle myself and they would have beat me. I LOVE being hated and challenged; it brings the best out of me and finally makes me realize I'm not always the problem or the cause of disaster. My point is no need to be nervous or worry about the results of the C.D., Poon, you're doing great! The C.D. was just another challenge, and because you've helped complete it, you and the others who produced have already won, no matter the sales.💜👻
I believe you might be worrying a lot, too much, about what some people think about you. Some might say that you should play faster, slower, more legato or staccato. Too much dynamic range or not enough. Have you ever wished after a performance that you had played a different note? Me too!!! I can assure you that there are many people that you motivate and inspire to improve. You inspire others to learn, practice, strive. Please keep striving, we need you...KEEP STRIVING!!!
Your first-time sightreading is equivalent to my one-year practice😅
Please don't compare!! I'm terrible compared to others in the world as well...

I first met this piece on the demo music recordings saved on my little Yamaha keyboard as a 13 year old piano learner. Then I met this piece again in adulthood after meeting a Czech girl who literally embodies the Bohemian charm, melodic innocence and playfulness of this song. Music really encapsulates the human condition and emotional experience.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for this "look behind the scenes" of the prep work and recording of this delightful version of Dvorak's "Humoresque" 🙏 I love it, and very much look forward for the release of the album in a week. Also to listening to Dvorak's chamber music and the other musicians who took part of this project!
It is absolutely a delight to watch videos like this of the whole process
Thank you for being interested, Emma!
I have a memory from early days learning the piano of an arrangement of Dvorak's New world symphony , synonymous with a television ' Bread ' advertisement. I wondered what the title meant ' New world' and was not disappointed by the explanation. The song 'Napadly Pisne' has perhaps brought his name forward in the wider listening Public ! Your detailed book learning seems frightening in it's depth. Thank you for sharing the rewards of your hard work with us !
I listen to your track everyday on my train to and from work. It calms me down and makes me feel more present. At this point it’s slowly becoming the background music to my life. When an artist puts their soul into the music, you can really feel it, so thank you Tiffany, for your beautiful music. I haven’t been moved by a piece of music this much in a long time, it makes me miss my hometown a lot. I hope you’ll get to release more recordings ❤️
Ohhh that makes me really happy to hear that my new recorded music accompanies your life like this. Thank you ❤️
Many many congratulations on this! Have had your single on loop for quite some time! Can't wait to listen to the whole album!
Wishing many more in the future!
It really fits that this piece concludes the album as it for me sometimes invokes an image of going home after a long day, so your tiredness during the recording process of the piece actually adds an element of humanity to it. The single is fantastic and I enjoyed it a lot, even more so now as you gave us a preview of the intricacies that went into it. 😊
Oh, I like the going home analogy! Hope you'll enjoy the whole musical story when the entire album gets released!
I was so excited when you announced that you were performing Humoresque. This was one my parents’ favorite pieces to listen to performed on the violin, so I grew up with this. I really enjoyed and appreciated the effort it takes even for a professional pianist to produce a performance you find acceptable. Thank you for bringing back good times for me!
Absolutely beautiful piece and recording! Thank you! Can't waiit to hear to whole album!
That’s amazing!!! I love your recording of the Humoresque by the way! I’ll definitely take a listen to the rest of the Dvorak album
Wonderful work Tiffany! I very much so enjoyed the story behind the recording process and how much meaning you brought to the Humoresque!
Sweet. I'm going to purchase the album when it comes out. I'm looking forward to listening to it in its entirety! Congrats Tiffany.
God i love your arrangement of humoresque. I feel every melody in my soul! Been playing this on repeat after finding it on ur Spotify music 🥹
Your videos are just so relaxing to watch.. You have such a calming voice 😄
I listened to your new release. I love it. You have given Dvořák Humoresque No.7 a "new" sound that traced back to its root.
Thank you so much! That's what I tried
I really like seeing behind the scenes Tiffany and thank you for sharing that. Not many people see behind the scenes of a musician either practicing or in the recording process especially in classicalfrim my prospective so I'm glad that you are showing the process not many people see. Love hearing you discussibg with the recorder what you are trying to convey as you play the piece. The song is very calm and beautiful and definitely something wonderful to listen to after a long day
oh? i don't quite recognize this piece, but i love it so far.
Tiffany, we love you, you're amazing
I can't believe your sight reading! So good.
Nice to see the work involved in recording. It seems to present its own tough challenges, like playing the same piece repeatedly but maintaining concentration to not make mistakes. I feel recordings are scrutinised more in terms of mistakes as opposed to live performances - so good job playing it so well!
Congratulations on the CD! I just ordered it.
I really appreciate your videos showing the progression of steps: choosing the pieces, picking the piano, meeting with other musicians, performance and CD. You have very nice editing of your videos by the way; it really helps.
I'm in my 50s and have now been taking piano lessons for 3 years (I'm a physicist). It's an inspiration to me to see what life is like for a real musician. Thank you Tiffany for your vlogs!
This video was really enlightening, I didn’t realize how emotionally-turbulent studio recording can be for the musician - thank you for this!
I'm always so jealous of how well you're able to play such beautiful music on a piano. 🙏✌
We love u ♥️ can't wait
Hi Tiffany, I want to thank you for this behind the scenes, I always feel so frustrated when I’m recording and I’ve always thought it’s a me thing because I haven’t really seen anyone in a recording process, so I’m really grateful and thank u so much for all ur effort in the video ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, Vivian! Glad you appreciate it 😊🙏 I get frustrated all the time during recording... 😬🙄
I still frequently listen to albums straight through. And this piece was one of the first pieces I listened to on my new speakers. Looking forward to the rest of the album!
That's great! Can't wait for you to hear the whole album story 🤗
I love the “Songs my Mother Taught Me”!💓💓
I do like to listen to albums in the order that the artist have put the pieces in the album, as you said, there are often a story or thought behind the order. Some artist even make it seems like a continuous piece, but that is more with pieces they have made them self, and each piece are more like a chapter in a book.
I am looking forward to buying your full album as Dvořák is a composer I have not listen much to. Except Humoresque, as that is such a popular piece that "everyone" knows :)
Keep up the good work!
Your recording on the other channel is truly elegant. Congrats!

Funny, I dug this same piece back out a few months ago after a 20 years hiatus. It is tricky, no doubt about it. Keep up the good work!
Such beautiful playing!! Thanks for sharing!!
Can't believe this is sight-reading! You play it so well!
tiffany congratulations! your voice gives me major tingles xdd
your soli in the piano trio are phenomenal!-second movement👍👍and all, absolute dream team for the piano trio
Hi Tiffany, Congratulations on the release of your CD; it is an event your subscribers have been eagerly looking forward to. And thank you for posting this behind the scenes video; it gives a taste of what the process entails, and demonstrates all of the hard work that goes into it. An aside: when you doffed your shoes at about 10:40 I thought you were going to do a full Alice Sara Ott...😉
I like your writing style. Occurs to me some famous writers. Woolf, Ishiguro, Proust. And, it’s a lovely piece, so relax.
Always "polished & professional"! 🎼 🎹
Thanks!
1 more week 😍😍😍
🤞🙇🏻♀️
I love you so much Tiffany.
Ahhhhh I was really hoping you’d post some kind of bts video of this whole process recording a classical piece and now you actually did! 🤝
Of course! Hope you enjoyed listening to the track 😊🤞
Dearest : Thank you for reading a brief excerpt from your journal ; much appreciated. Steven : Late morning - USA 07/23/22
Merci 🌺 bon week-end ! Tahiti Island, vendredi, 22h48..
Great video and look forward to the album release. Thanks for sharing behind the scenes and esp your prep work. You inspired me to learn to play this and for 2 days I have spent hours on the piano and also watched your video repeatedly trying to grasp your play techniques (would you detail more on those challenging points?)
Hope you will come to Texas (Houston or Austin) to perform (as Austin is the music city of the world.)
13:20 that was soooooo relatable 😭
It's very cool to see your internal dialog as you work through things. Using text is a much better way with music. You also must have a really good sense of emotional memory to remember your thought process so clearly
Thank you. I sometimes feel like emotional memory is all I have... 🥺😬
Bravo
Congrats on the new album Tiffany. I'll definitely stream it.
Thank you 🙏
J'ADORE... TOUT !
Great to see you agonise over this piece. Someone said Dvorak thought no one could play it as he intended and as he himself played it. For me it’s different every time and I’m never happy with it. But I keep trying. I have to play it later this month on a high-stakes stage. Not quite worried; more anxious. I want it to be as good as it can be. I know it won’t be perfect. I want it to be ‘good-humoured’ as Dvorak must have intended. I want it to smell in spots like New York in 1884. Horse manure I suppose so. The horse-drawn trams etc. the bustle of lower Manhattan. Not sure exactly why. Moving pictures in my head. Anyhow I’m going through the kinds of agonising you posted. Hope all my fretting doesn’t get in the way. It will be what it will be. And I will have squeezed myself the only ways I know. If I have an underlying intent it is to see if I can even in a minuscule way influence the audience to consider speaking and listening to each other in more good-humoured tones. Whatever they have to say, then to say it more considerately. And to listen more considerately also. Let’s see. Congratulations on your recording. I’ve to find it now.
So fascinating to follow your journey when you learn/prepare a new piece. Thank you so much for all the work you put into sharing this with us in such detail, it gives the whole "performance" or in this case, recording, an extra level of depth which is much appreciated.
Congrats on the recording and I hope it is a huge success! 👏👏👏
Thank you! 🤞😳🤞
Heck yeah
I was moved by his fantastic performance. Tiffany, You look good in walker boots and Chelsea boots.
I waited to see the complete video of your final performance this piece
Love it. I'm really good at reading Minor scales/flats, but when I get to those Major scales/sharps I'm not as good, I can get it done in all it just takes a little while longer. Good job though, keep up the good work
I really like how your piano sounds
My home loan Steinway piano says "thank you" :)
That little introduction into Dvorak’s music is every Randy Newman and Michael Marra track ever written. Thank you very much for your subtleties in musical education.
Can I ask: did Dvorak change everything about the musical genre he was involved in or did he simply parody the style of his time?
God bless
Hi Tiffany, nice new hair-cut btw :)
I am nothing compare to this lol. I can’t even sight read compare to the master
Hi Tiffany u have a good one love ya !
I see what you did there in the intro. Similar to me exercising in front of the two way webcam. Nice.
Pan Huo Huo! Lively little Pan! (indeed!) 🤓
the only reason i clickec on this video is cause if currently learnig it for my grade 5 cello exam. my teacher thinks the cello version is best(and i agree obvs) but i hink you play this piece beautifully.🥰
Aww hope you enjoy playing the cello version 🤗
I already bought it from iTunes music last week. Seems it is already released
Thank you! Only 2 singles are released so far. All other tracks/full album will be released on July 29th.
Hi Tiffany, great video! I'm curious as to how recording a classical work is done because in more "mainstream" (whatever that means) music, we often stitch together the best bits from different takes. This is not a difficult job because the music is usually very fixed in tempo and artists play/sing with a click track. I'd imagine with a piece such as this where there is a lot more flexibility in tempo and expression that doing this is difficult. So are your edits simply the best single take or the best of multiple takes stitched together?
Thanks :)
Same as "mainstream"... best of everything
😉
Yikes - 6 flats? no way. For me never more than 4 preferably no more than 3 - haha. THEN... to switch to sharps - forget it. Beautiful as always - best of luck on the new album.
潘媽,佢🉐左啦 ! 😂😂
💎...
What microphone do you use to record piano? (Or has she already talked about it?)
@Tiffany: mh... do you use earbuds to listen to quality recordings? Not full audiophile headphones, maybe open-back?
8:47 her hands are boneless😂
Art Tatum played it in his own way, you can find the video in CZcams, it is very rare video of Tatum.
Popular it may be (and I think a pop song was made out of ot a century or so ago), but you have something new to add to it - (you!).
(your depth and breadth as a unique human, i.e. your artistic side)...
12:04 ALTERNATE ANSWERS
What is your intent, musically?
ANSWER: To carry the emotions and mind away, and maybe even elevate them.
Who are you trying to embody?
ANSWER: Myself. Embodying someone else is a valid artistic goal, but I would have to let the audience know who I am embodying, and that embodying someone else is my artistic intent for this performance.
I was listening (and not watching, which would have killed it), and at 4:30 when the viola came in, it struck me that he was VERY good, and in my mind he was saying two things: 'The viola is a superior instrument than the piano for expressiveness!' (I would have taken that as a challenge), and 'Kid, you have a long way to go artistically...' (another challenge, of course, but this one requires life-long patience) (unless someone comes along and accelerates you!). Maybe it is just me, always seeing things as challenges. My parting thought was that it would be good to spend time around him and be a shameless artistic sponge...! It also gets back to the breadth and depth of your life experiences (which all come through in your interpretation, taste, desire, and sense of what is right and needed, and which make you 'you', for whatever that is worth, and there is the million dollar question)...
I love you
How do you make that soft sound in the sight reading recording?
I stay close to the keys, like I'm lying on the carpet under the piano...🙃
@@TiffanyPoonpianist I didn't expect you to reply! Thanks so much, I've been trying to figure out for a while! Do you mean your body is closer to the piano?
😘~~❣
Is that D-274 concert grand??🍡
Yes!
I don't know if Tiffany knows this herself, but she has a "double" voice. What I mean is her voice is like two voices at once, 1 voice 1 octave over the other, but the lower voice is a lot weaker than the upper voice. I think sessions with a speech therapist could correct this?
haha I always wondered why 6 "b" would not immediately be replaced with 1 "#" or so. which brings me closer to IT than to professional western music... ;)
to me it is better to be not tired, and leave out some preparation if not otherwise possible. no practising can make up for a worn down nervous system.
Ich nenne meine selbstreffktion Musik „ Anarcho-Musik;):)...!!!
Do people ever come up to you & say “hey there. I was wondern if you play fir weddings?”
(BTW: What was that about Gb and F#?!)
The section in the key of Gb major (6 flats) was followed by a chord of F# minor (3 sharps). This might be interesting because the tonic of both is enharmonically equivalent.
@@tom.3536 or maybe A major instead of the parallel F# minor
@@henrikmulders8633 Yes, I agree. There is more to suggest the second part is in A major rather than F# minor. What I would say though, is that the first chord of the section is F# minor and the chord before it is Gb major. So, these two individual chords are linked with the enharmonically equivalent root, which allows the distant modulation from Gb to A major.
@@tom.3536Maybe we can say the shifting tonal center makes the wistful charm
Have you lost interest in a lot of flashy notes as you mature?
Come on ..... Just GET ON with it !
I predict , that although an album such as this is the purest evidence . That one day a person will discover the blogs and vlogs of Tiffany and this person will be intent , on the pursuit of performance composition “ as it is “ . These documented experiences will inspire bye way of art as performance rather than performance art as a mechanical adherence to the world of “ performance art “ .
0:40 Awww!! 🤗
Noice
Always very interesting to listen to and watch your videos but I do think you tend to overthink things. Surely every time you play a piece it will be different, it's part of the creative process. So a 'perfect' recording today will be different from one tomorrow.
