The problem with DEI is it's like saying "just don't notice the flies" once you realize the flies are there because someone put them there. So no longer are the flies there because it's an accident or nature or good for the story, no, it's because someone on set let loose a bunch of flies because they like flies. And rewatching older movies, it's so blatantly obvious how shoehorned these flies are in modern movies because it's done in the absence of passion and craft.

It was actually based on history - it was inspired by the violence around the 1973 petrol crisis and the wounds he saw as a doctor in sydney.
People drove fast and hard, and sometimes drunk, back then. It's died a lot but you still see moments of it here. The government says it will mandate electric scooters instead - sorry, EV Vehicles, it calls them; yes, I know.
But we have gigantic regions of nothing between the few cities. I've been places where breaking down is pretty serious, and it is shocking how quickly mobile phones don't work.
Recently the government announced a mandatory 5G upgrade. That means shorter distances for reception. That means more people will be stranded and unable to get help, especially as EV Vehicles have the range of a spaniel with four broken legs. And EV Vehihikillls can't run air conditioners.
So Millar's hatred of the fossil fuel cars has gotten the results he wanted - the death of the hoon culture - but the cost is loss of freedom and even life. We're entering a dystopia, but there'll be no films about it. It'd be like watching someone slowly dying from brain cancer.

I think there is a greater purpose to it. They want to transition it more toward woke ideology. But have just enough brain cells to rub together to realize that if they went full Kathleen Kennedy that it would drive the audience away in droves. And that would be especially bad for Mad Max because it doesn't have the same broad appeal that Star Wars used to have. The audience was more specific with that one, and it appealed to said audience in specific ways.
My point being, they're taking it slow with the transition, but the red flags are there. This is more pernicious than you might realize.

Never mind all that, who was asking for a side story about a really dumb character whose plan in the previous movie was steal a truck, hide the war brides, and hope the villain doesn't catch them when she makes a run back to a place she has no way of knowing still exists. Which surprise, didn't.

I’d definitely argue that Mel is the superior Mad Max. Nothing against Tom Hardy, but imo he just doesn’t have the presence to pull off playing a man that’s retreated into himself, a man of few words that speaks volumes through small gestures and expressions instead. Max is constantly fighting with himself inside wanting to reconnect with people but being so damaged he reflexively pulls away. It’s no easy task as an actor to play that kind of character. Mel understood Max.

I still like Fury Road. For me, I do not see her as a supreme "Girl Boss". Max still had to help her out of several situations. Max is the one that suggested they go back to take over Joe's home because there was nothing but salt out the way they were going. Max had to save Furiosa with his blood as she lay dying. He had to help out in all but the first chase scene. An even then, when he escapes with them at first, he is resistant to help her. But when they get to the canyon to sell the gas to the motorcycle gang, he's the one that has to drive out and help shoot the gang attacking them. And he sees at that point what she wants to do, just like he eventually helps out to drive the tanker in Mad Max 2, as well as help the kids in Thunderdome. So, I'll still go see this one as it sounds like she's even less of a girl boss in this one. And I do want to see Chris Hemsworth as the bad guy. Sounds like he knocks it out of the park. And Ana is someone I love to watch as well.

Hey, Shad - I, too, watched it, today; I enjoyed a lot of it - I wasn't 'bored'- but I think there were more than a few moments that could definitely have been tightened up- & there were other moments that _could_ have been let linger, but weren't -- I liked the character of Imperator Jack, how they communicated & interacted in the low-key way they did, & how his relationship with Furiosa evolved.
I kind of agree the cutting of the 40-Day War seems like an odd choice- when it appeared that so much was leading up to it, & yet- it's pretty clear that Furiosa's story *_isn't_* about the war...
Chris was *amazing* as the lead antagonist- deliciously unhinged, & looking like he was having the time of his life filming it; I do agree with Oz, to a degree - it's actually kind of undeniable that Immortan Joe was a sh^t person- _however_ , he's ruled over this area for a *long* while, tyrannically or not- the Citadel is functioning & supplies are managed, more or less- & he's developed mutual arrangements with the only other 'powers' - whereas, it's ironic that while Dementus had held his horde together, seemingly through sheer force of will- for who knows how long- & though failing against the Citadel, manages to take GasTown, & even (sort of) negotiate a deal to keep & administer it- & yet it all falls apart so quickly: the man had enough charisma to have *hundreds* follow him- but _one_ subordinate's subordinate not taking orders from him, in one moment is enough to pique him & hit his ego, triggering jealousy & spite enough to anatagonise & splinter Octoboss' group of them off- & the denizens of GasTown are on the edge of revolt in barely more than a decade- he even managed to take the Bullet Farm, but he's utterly unable to control them; I feel like it was an interesting statement about someone with immense charisma- yet proves incompetent in administration -- someone who wants more power than they have, but has no real clue how to handle it & what to do with it- though it's also possible that his eventual failure has something to do with nihilistic personality- was he doing what he did, purely as something to do, after all his losses...?
PS. I think Tom Burke/ 'Imperator Jack' got a good accent/ dialect tutor (like Hardy, he's actually English- the late Alan Rickman was his godfather!)

I think I've always been more interested in Mad Max's world than Mad Max in particular, so it doesn't bother me not having Max. And they didn't make Furiosa super-humanly strong for her build so I was able to engage and enjoy the extended world building done here. My only real complaint would be missing an extended scene of the war that could have been very cool- although would have made the film four hours long. But at least one last spectacle chase before the final showdown would have been better. That said, I really liked it especially compared to most recent films (that are just the same garbage over and over) and hope it does well enough to give me more George Miller directed films in this series.

Off-topic sort of Shad, but when you mentioned Peach in the Mario movie, I remembered something I always think after I finish watching that movie.
They made Peach into what Daisy is supposed to be. A tomboy princess who directly defends her own kingdom, Sarasaland, and has no known protectors aside from herself.
If that had been Daisy, I would have been cheering her on. But it was supposed to be Peach, a clear-cut, dainty girlie girl. They reversed my entire expectation of the character.

Now if I add a tune and a bigger turbo which is like 1st stage mad max you're looking at up to 1500 ft lbs of torque and 800 horsepower. The problem I have with the Furiosa movies is that she is blatantly just a feminist replacement for Mad Max. And that makes her a trojan horse. I suspect the reason a lot of the plot fell flat for Shad and he felt bored was because the movie was engineered to appeal to women and their problems in the setting. To set them up as victims to barbarian raider men.
I would also venture to guess that if there is a third of fourth movie, one of those will have a feminist uprising to establish some utopian matriarchy. And it will have a lot of posturing about how men ruined the world and men are the reason it sucks in the post apocalypse and the age of men should come to an end. Mark my words that's where this is heading. I am just uncertain how long it will take to get there.

    so here is the thing.
why did they call this "a mad max Saga"? why didnt they just call it Furiosa? why did they attach "a mad max saga" to it? simple.
they knew no one knows who this character or gives a crap about her. people would look at her and go "who?"
you know, the woman from fury road!!!!
    there were 5 women........
you know..... the lead one, the badass one!
all them did some badass things at one point.
    .......the one handed one....
    oh...........okay?
that would be the response. why? cause no one gives a fuck about her. and the creators knew that. so what did they do? they attached "a mad max saga" to it. why? cause EVERYONE knows who mad max is. its kinda like Peter Parker. even if you dont know the comics, almost everyone knows his backstory and the famous line.
mad max is the same. everyone knows who he is, even if they dont anything about the franchise cause he is a iconic person.
you know who no one knows about? furiosa. she is just that chick that was in fury road. thats how they know her. the 1 handed chick in the mad max movie.
so knowing all this, they added that cause people would go "oh, a mad max saga? sweet, lets watch that!!!!" only to have...........no mad max. like Oz said, that was one of his complaints..... no mad max in a mad max saga.
