The fact this will eventually happen to Frieren and Fern makes me even sadder
I think they are already alluding to it in the ED
As far as i remember, Fern hasn't learn any spell from Frieren. She already learnt ordinary offensive magic before she met Frieren. Basic defensive spell too.
Fern learn the spell that make her able to see under the cloth from grimoire she (and Frieren) got from finishing some task.
And last magic to make clothes clean and spotless, she got from Serie.
So, if the comparison is about the spell Flamme liked being a memento for Serie. Fern and Frieren still doesn't have that kind of bond.

I think the fact that elves experience less emotions is actually an evolutionary benefit. Imagine having to live your entire life constantly grieving.
Then I might be an elf myself.
I just found out in the middle of march that an old friend of mine have died out of age. I shed a couple of tears, bought me the soda he offered me the first time we met, which was in this rally event when I was trying to take my rally license. He cheered on us and offered us a mug of that soda which I started loving. He even told me that he used to do rallying himself, driving a VW beetle in the so called "stone age" which was basically 60's, 70's, and there was a VW bug nearby, so I took a photo of the soda and the bug, made a funeral speech, and then I said "cheers to you, my friend." And proceeded to drink the soda with the bug.
After that, I would remember him, but I wouldn't grieve him at all, because he would be happy for living the life he always wanted, and I also remember what people say.

I think this is a great writing technique to show how much someone means to another. The depth of longing is so much more when someone continues to do something despite calling it ridiculous than someone else enshrines and celebrate them.
That's how we know even though the rest of humanity and the magic academy makes statues and festivals of himmel and flamme, we can feel the longing means so much more to serie and frieren.

"I knew. I just didn't want to face it. But I wonder if it's not sadder that we leave *you* behind? Living all the years you live… How many times have you had to say goodbye?"
To with Peorth responds that while it is indeed sad that the goddesses try to remember the joy as much as the sorrow and that for them they take solace that the ones they love will in a way live on forever in their hearts
I wouldn't be surprised if Serie secretly goes to Flamme's grave every few decades/century just to fill the surrounding area with flowers
If he had gone a little further, the demon king might have had to evacuate his castle once a year.

For a favorite spell, a field of flowers is cringe choice. Serie clearly says it's useless in that context. You people literally have attention span of 3 seconds and just fail to comprehend simple things. She expects ambition, hunger and such from students. She is clearly alluding that frieren has failed those expectations. Im genuinely ashamed to watch anime when I see how reality detached the anime community is.

Therefore that means Serie is aware that it's not actually useless overall and is saying it in a certain context. There's a very illogical narrative that Serie is contradictory and your comment is pretty much a part of it. I just walked you through why your comprehension needs some work. Maybe go outside for a change?

I mean, even after flamme got old or even beyond flamme's death. Serie still call her "anoko" means that child in Japanese
of course she feels it. She fully knows that and that's what her actions show. One simply does not build the association by an accident. She just play tough cus she's a warmonger which is also a correct way of behaving.
I love serie so much. She tries to act like she doesn't care about her apprentices, but in the end she is just incredibly saddened by their short lifespans and tries to shield herself from loss.

It was 1000 years ago, but she still remember her. And even use this spell (even when she cant admit it). It hit me really hard for 18 sec animantion. Thank you. Also, little detail (i love small details in this 20 minute show) first real adventure of Fern and Frieren together was looking for spell that create blue flowers. Not fighting demons, dragons, and dungeons. Looking for flowers. And i find it beutifull.
And the first time himmel and frieren meet was through said spell

I’ve learned to never take Serie’s word at face value. She says she shouldn’t take on human students before offering to teach Fern within moments of meeting her. She called Flamme a failure and her flower spell meaningless while sitting in a room filled with magically tended flowers.

She's afraid to admit that she actually cares about her students. What's actually sad about Serie as mentor to Flamme was that she never got to visit Flamme's grave or get to see her on her final moments.

It’s been a few days since I watched the final episode. And I just unlocked a repressed memory, of knowing how Serie probably feels. A memory of when I watched Maquia.
Spoiler btw:
I didn’t cry because her son was dead. But because when she was remembering all her time with him there was a montage of how her son referred to her. “Mom” when he was a kid and “Hey, you.” When he was a teenager. “Hey, you” is mega disrespectful to use towards your own mother, who would remember such a thing? But to her it was a very precious memory, of her son calling for her. And this made me reflect on my own relationship with my mother. How many awful memories I’ve given her over the years that she considers precious? Memories which I regret and would like to take back, but can’t. They’re all probably precious to my mom because she loves me. And I’m tearing up just writing about this.
Serie hates the idea of such a silly spell being someone favorite. But it’s still a precious memory of someone she loved, no matter how awful or ridiculous it may seem.
I was expecting frieren to do something happy or funny like a flower domain expansion, and then that happened…
