    I say this in the nicest way but Andre, I think you’re a little nice to truck companies. When you were talking about the e GMC Hummer, and said it was a bunch of small things and nothing major, I’m glad Nathan called that out. When 9,000 pound machine becomes stuck or breaks down, especially when it’s an electric vehicle, all those things matter. Luckily Roman wasn’t in a dangerous situation but it could’ve been. Don’t be afraid to call them out more. It’s the same with your own Colorado. GM is putting out half baked products. But I’m not picking on GM just because it’s GM, you’ve done that with Ford and Jeep/Ram products as well.
    Anyways, great podcast as normal! It’s funny that the Ram Classic had so many videos.

    Stoked for the series with the Dakota. I loved that generation and owned a 2002 quad cab with the 4.7L. That thing was a workhorse! Will be interesting to see what the mini Dakota can do.

      My dad had one of those, not sure what year his was, but the same generation as the 2002. I loved that truck the handful of times I drove it. Lower than a new Ranger or Taco was great for actually using the bed and had most of the off-road chops. Dodge could re-release that exact truck today with a 3.6 and it would sell very well.

    "The Advertised Loss Leader" has been thus for decades. I drove from Missoula, Montana to Spokane , Washington in 1984 after a new Toyota Longbed Deluxe 2wd 22R 4 cyl. 5 speed, and negotiated for the dealership's parts runner (8k miles) down to $7800. Gentlemen I was very sad when the 7.3 powerstroke videos stopped. :( Me being the proud owner of a 1997 Ford F-250 powerstroke 4x4 with 60,000+ original miles I was excited for that video series. But thank you for explaining why those videos unfortunately stopped. If I may, I think what would have helped make that video series a little more successful is if the truck was bone stock, and if you guys would have made the comparison video between the 7.3 and a 12 valve 2nd gen Cummins. Looking forward to next years videos!

  • @caribootrails1269

    Great content guys. When you get the Cybertruck, you should do a long distance towing "race" against a gas or diesel truck (a F150 would be a good one) similar to what Geoff Buys Cars and The McMaster did over in the UK with a used diesel Mercedes car vs a new electric Porsche. They stayed to the speed limits and compared overall time, cost and stress after driving from the northern tip of Scotland to the southern tip of England with very interesting results. Maybe a trip from Colorado to Texas pulling a travel trailer to simulate an average family going on a long distance trip. If electric is the future, lets see what that future will be like.

    • @jimjones-pz1tt
      @jimjones-pz1tt Před 6 měsíci +1

      Last year I had an email exchange with Andre. TFL had no interest in my suggestion: 5,000 lb. travel trailers (caravans) towed by a Ford Lightning and a Ford 150 5.0 V8. Boulder, CO to Cody, WY to simulate a 2 week family vacation. Given the lack of charging infrastructure in Wyoming, I wanted to see how many vacation days would be wasted charging the stupid Lightning. Instead, they "drove" a Lightning to the northernmost point in Alaska by putting it on a ship and not driving through Canada.

    • @caribootrails1269
      @caribootrails1269 Před 6 měsíci

      I wondered why they didn't drive through Canada on that Alaska trip. I live in northern BC and wanted to see how they would do on a real trip along the Alaska Highway. They should drive the Cybertruck along the highway during the winter towing a Bobcat on a car trailer like the gas and diesel trucks are doing right now. We need to see how the electric trucks perform in the real world. I have yet to see one a Lighting in my town.

    • @caribootrails1269
      @caribootrails1269 Před 6 měsíci

      Yup, that's what I would expect. They should do the test on a long weekend like July 4th when most people start their vacations. What I don't know is how the cost of fuel vs electricity would be? Gas and diesel prices are coming down and I think electricity has gone up or subsidies are running out. They would get a lot of clicks for a video like that.

    My favorite is the Honda Acty. I have seen trucks like this in Canada being used as delivery trucks. I have also seen them used by contractors on construction sites. There was a red crew cab with a symbol on the front that I didn't recognize. I have also enjoyed the journey that Andre went through with his Nitro Colorado. It was funny and interesting to see how the new technology like "over the air updates" caused unexpected problems. I have been waiting to see Andre put towing mirrors on his truck. I would have liked to see Andre test products for the new Colorado like different mufflers to see which one improved the fuel economy & sound. Because with all the new 4 cylinder trucks coming out I think aftermarket mufflers will be very popular but you don't know which to choose until you hear how it sounds. Or what products improve fuel economy, like an aftermarket air intake, and by how much? I have enjoyed all the "cheap truck" videos. You guys talk alot about fuel economy on new vehicles but I wanted to see you make fuel economy improvements to old trucks. Banks has been the expert on diesel engines but you haven't seen how much a diesel can be improved to increase gas mileage, horsepower, and still pass emissions testing and burn clean. Modern diesel engines have a bad reputation because of a few idiots that like to blow black diesel smoke on the cars behind them.

    Just a comment on the tiny Japanese utility vehicle. That vehicle is too small for the US if driving on streets with cars and trucks. In a wreck, it would be fatal at low speeds.
    However, I believe Toyota could take the plans to the 1979-1983 truck and make it again with the following updated it would be wildly successful. (1) updated safety features including crumple zones etc. (2) updated small gas motor under 150 hp and under 200 ft lbs of torque. (3) Offer the same interior with the exception of the dash, make it for modern stereo and nav. (4) make it the absolute least expensive vehicle to manufacture and to own. Keep the price at a base of $18,000 and high end at $25,000. You’d sell millions.

    I been seeing Mahindra Roxor builds lately. Lifted, in closed cab. It might be interesting to see a review comparing Roxor, kei trucks and utility SxS.
    Also for the budget minded, comparing the 2024 Tacoma to the 2023. The 2024 Ranger to the 2023 and the 2023 Colorado to the 2022. Sometime I think the “all new” truck isn’t “all new” underneath and really isn’t much better than the previous generation.
    I’ve been looking at the new Ranger and Colorado and just about decided that I’ll buy a low mileage used previous model, and save a few dollars because the newest model isn’t that much better, and in some cases worse.

      Unibody vehicles are less susceptible to corrosion damage than body on frame vehicles. I was told while working with Idaho Fish & Game in 1981 that "if you're hauling all your stuff from job to job, you're driving a truck." My cohort was referring to the 1969 VW Squareback, which had a full-size 6.00-15 spare in the trunk and my first set of radial tires, Michelin XZX tires at Twin Falls. (Much taller than the 13" Michelin XZX on the new VW Rabbit.) The poor man's jeep, "folk's wagon".

A lift and wheels aren't a big issue, but once the engine starts getting meddled with it becomes less interesting from a standpoint of going and looking for one for myself. A before and after with modifications like you have done is better than buying modified from the get go.

      Older trucks are a niche area in itself anyways. They ride rough and are loud, you have to specifically want an old truck, and a manual transmission certainly lowers that crowds numbers.

    Love my 2019 Ranger FX4. It tows 5000 pounds like it's not there, 7000 pounds is still pretty easy. It goes through mud holes that non-Rubicon Wranglers get stuck in. It's quiet on the freeway. Seats are comfortable. Has just the right amount of tech. Analog dial gouges with a small display is pleasant to look at. The interior has a lot of cheap materials, but at 40,000 miles it doesn't squeak or rattle so it's better than a Mercedes C-Class.
    My only real complaints are that the factory tires are not good when cold and wet, but fine in the snow, and fuel economy is not good - off-road tires probably aren't helping either of those complaints.

    Surprised to hear you guys felt like there was unfinished business with the Ranger. I think I did basically lose interest in that one, apparently at some point prior to you putting stickers on it. It wasn't a new product when you guys got it, but it also wasn't old enough to be interesting.
    Regarding vehicles I'd like to see you guys buy for extended reviews in 2024; If the *Toyota Stout* is going to be a real thing and available that soon (confidence extremely low), I'd definitely like to see that. Basically likewise for any new compact or midsize, should there be a new Dakota or anything like that. I know this is the wrong podcast for it, but I'd like to see lots of *Land Cruiser* content. Not sure if buying will be the best approach for that, or, given how much fanfare it has, maybe Toyota will have more in the fleet to lend to journalists/content creators? You guys would know better than me.
    If you're doing used vehicles, they should be old enough to be interesting. I'm sorry to hear about the F-250 not being that successful. I was alarmed when I saw it was modified. Only diesel tuner I would ever trust is Banks. I wonder if you could buy something non-running for dirt cheap and work to get it operational again? NOT a restoration, more like a frugal project where you end up with something cool for not much money at the end. Project could have a 3-6 month timeline and never need to represent a major % of TFL's bandwidth. Would people watch that? Again, you'd know better than me.
    Beyond 2024, I would like to see the R2T/R2S! Maybe my first EV? Cybertruck definitely not for me.

    Remember Bonus depreciation is getting phased out. Only 80% of the value can be immediately expensed under the rule for 2023 filings, and Sec 179 is only another lesser portion. 2024 it will be 60% of the value if the lobbyists don't throw a fit, and complete phaseout by 2027

    It's a car. A solid frame and solid rear axle do not a truck make. If that were the case, many cars through the 70s would be considered trucks.

    Pickup trucks have such tiny beds. Why are they not vans? A spare wheel could go high on a wall or sit between cab and box. But if tall as an off-road capable truck...underneath seems to have been a thing? I grew up with tiny hatchbacks and wagons (yes, Open Kadett) with a full spare under the floor.

    Despite me normally choosing any Ford over any ugly round fat Ram, the TRX, althoug was a huge overkill beating Gen 2 Raptor with extra 252 hp, had some sort of soul and comfy winter truck vibe, it felt like a passion project for Stellantis, while Ford feels like 100% made for money. It was also a huge disappointment, cos I expected Ford to find a more elegant way to make power, like maybe a 600-ish hp hybrid.

    I can't speak to the EVs because I live in the "country", and they aren't up to snuff yet on infrastructure. I can, however, offer an opinion on the Raptors and Raptor R's. I (at least temporarily) moved on from Toyota with them dropping the V8 and the loss of recovery/tow hooks. I don't need to tow a lot, so I am more interested in capability and longevity. I thought about a Raptor or Raptor R, but when I found out (I ordered my truck in February) that it may be a year or more for just a Raptor (let alone a Raptor R), I ordered a Tremor with a Coyote. I initially thought I would supercharge it, but I'm getting better fuel economy than everyone else (including other Coyotes) so I may just stand pat. The order times and prices are prohibitive for most people, hence the limited Raptor R enthusiasm. Peace, Love!!

    Heck why would I go ICE. My horse can go anywhere. Eat and drink almost anywhere. It happens.
    And then later it becomes glue.
    Quit quitting on what comes after ICE. It will happen. Just when and what.

    Buy the every man truck. Not the exorbitantly expensive truck that most people aren't able to afford. The middle of the road trucks are what people are buying and, naturally, viewing on CZcams. Something thats reasonably obtainable to the average person.

    GMC Hummer EV to me is the best truck TFL ever bought. Many other vehicles would have the same issues as this truck did in the beginning but they show the off road capability, towing tests that blew my mind and outperforming the competition, and the super fun drag races. Way better looking and capacity than the ugly cyber(SH!T)truck. Don’t care what others say, I stick with my opinion.
