- The Warrior Tradition, tells the astonishing, heartbreaking, inspiring, and largely-untold story of Native Americans in the United States military. Why would Indian men and women put their lives on the line for the very government that took their homelands? The film relates the stories of Native American warriors from their own points of view - stories of service and pain, of courage and fear.
This WNED PBS production premiered in November 2019.

I fought with Native Americans in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. They are indeed warriors. And this indeed is their land. Semper Fi

I'ts our land too. Especially we who have lived here for several hundred years and have NO other land. and they have huge reservations that nobody can take from them, they don't even have to pay property tax to the government on there. Don't have to buy it. they have more land than anyone else, as families go.
May Mother told me that my great-grandfather was Oglala Sioux! Sadly, I did not live with her and when I visited her she rarely spoke of her heritage from both sides! But I am proud of the Sioux blood that I have! My father married an Ojibwa woman who I loved very much! Unfortunately she passed due to cancer 5 years after they were married! Our Native American people’s are proud and like the tribesmen said “this is our land no matter what and we must protect it!

I'm Italian who can pass as a 3rd gender warrior and I'm from an ancient pre Rome indigenous culture.
From what I understand the Choctaw fought in the early 1800's battle of new Orleans, we were moved in the trail of tears but still in the same area called the Arklatex, Barksdale air force base is close, my dad served under PATTON , my father in-law under MacArthur in the NORMANDY invasion, my was Choctaw and father in-law was caddo Addis. Proud of them both, thank you for your service.

Why would native Americans fight for the people who exterminated their people? @@kathybrown7443 He fought for his people's exterminators. Navajo should have refused to fight the Japanese who share similar culture and values, if not the Navajo are ethnically Asian. Navajo Code Talker did turn the tide but should have refused to do so in memory of their ancestors.
I was so against the pipeline and so angry when they lost. Indian lands need to be protected and respected.
I wasn't! The pipeline needs to go through! Respect must be given to ensure no burial grounds or sacred place is unearthed, but the pipeline WAS needed!

At 63, saw so many spills ruining and destroying and killing wildlife...why do we have to make it go through their lands. How about we build a pipeline through your yard, respecting your house? I think you would be really pissed to see it. It's like wind turbines, they only work when there is wind, they are not economical or less pollutant, a sore eye and kills many migrating birds. But everyone has the right to his opinion. It's all about money and that is the bottom line, they don't care about anything else...
@@nancywages7029Ma'am, the whole Keystone XL Pipeline got blocked because of Political nonsense. Simply do me a favor and look at a current Pipeline Map. You'll see there is already Pipelines all through the US.
Now me being a Nebraskan, I must admit I am a little hesitant to support a Pipeline that goes through the largest freshwater aquifer in the US. I would have protested for the Pipeline to bypass that Aquifer.
Google US Pipeline Map, and you'll see the whole thing is silly. What the Pipeline would have meant is cheaper gasoline. Which means struggling families can afford transportation, prices of Goods would decrease.
When Gas Prives raise, so does everything because it takes Vehicles to transport.
The Keystone could have bypassed the Aquifer and linked with the existing Keystone Pipeline.
As long as Burial Grounds are bypassed and all Natives are compensated through a lease of their Property. I think it could have been a real benefit to the Natives in Pipeline Compensation. As you might know, the Pineridge rez is suffering from terrible poverty. The Souix would have benefited greatly with a Lease to use a pipeline.

Now, this is one Group of Indigenous people who conduct themselves in a similar manner. They are natural warriors and a very loyal group of people. The Jewish people thank those lovely Church Maori people living in Brisbane who stood up and protested against HAMAS Terrorists.
This is one of the most fantastic videos ever presented on uTube. A real eyeopener. These First Nation people should great pride in themselves and 5heir people, regardless of actual tribe. I served with a navajo in korea during the cold war usaf security police 1983-84. Much respect!

"A" Troop 2nd Sqd 1st Cavalry Regiment, attached to the 4th Infantry division.
I served in 86airborne, US Special Forces, MAC v SOG, served behind lines then Phoenix Program, then CIA military programs because I sought my Eagle Feathers after my grandfathers. Many of us were never acknowledged by the government though returned very wounded and took long to recover but my family sang for me while I was recovering from wheel chair and relearning to talk. The beauty was healing and brought me back
My brother was an Army combat medic for 24 years two tours of Iraq and two tours of Afghanistan blown up in both places. I am now 31 years old and just enlisted in the Army National Guard I passed my ASVAB yesterday and am super excited. All I can think about is my warrior blood the example my brother set for me of the warrior he was.

@@lauranicholls9421People always talk about slavery and Jim Crow, but personally, those don’t bother me as much as ethnic cleansing of the the Native Americans. Truly, we erased one of the greatest warrior and spiritual cultures known to man. As an adult I’m rarely ashamed for the actions of others, but documentation like this one and the trail of tears and even movies like the movie “hostile” with Christian Bale make me tear up. Seeing the warrior culture still alive today, even after the forced conversion into American ideals, it’s truly beautiful.

Native Americans are the biggest patriots out there, many families had to join WW2 and WW2 just for us to become u.s. citizens in our own home..
The native population is more American and patriotic than many other immigrant citizens. Respect and example to this nation and respect from their own traditional nation received and respected received back into their nation. So much better than others! Thank you for your service

Beautiful doco. Maori are similar as are many Indigenous people who are colonised. We still fight for our land, our people, our culture, and always will. That is our way back, our way now, and our way forward.

I must fall to my knees to honor you all. I made it to Nam in 69. It was a horror. I flew hilo to get solders from the fields. That was I was shot down. Saved by ground soldiers. Wounded & sent home. But I feel like I should have died trying to get more brother's out. Whites never understood.

But if you identify yourselves as a seperate Nation, an o w n Nation
then you should stay peacefully by yourself or start y o u r seperate warrior units. As allies of the US or neutral. It's called independence or sovereignty.

The war in Afghanistan followed the same patterns of occupation and extermination that US engaged in 19th century occupation and war of Native Americans. Native Americans should have seen a pattern when fighting in Afghanistan. Hence, why the ancestral spirits of the Natives chose and helped the Afghani people in their war against aggression and occupation. Afghani people in great admiration of the Natives war against the American occupation, expansion, and aggression and Afghanis likewise learned from the Native Americans.

I served in the GWOT first with the Army and then with the Marine Corps and then went back to the Army. I spent a long time in combat. I always got asked why I would fight for a country that has done what it has done to my people and I would always say that it was my country too and I fought for the brothers beside me. We have warriors blood in our DNA and the Great Spirit guides us.

Ho grande ammirazione per gli spartani, per me i più grandi guerrieri del mondo antico. Tuttavia la mentalità spartana, si addice più alle tribù delle pianure (Lakota, Cheyenne etc.) che combattevano spesso solo per la gloria e poi per respingere i bianchi. @@maybekids According to our Ancient Greek historical archives, the Greeks were in the Western Hemisphere long before any other European.
It’s really rooted in their blood. DNA is one big part of how we develop and gain abilities which are passed down.

@@jacqueslee2592Buddy; most Afghans probably don't even know what Native Americans are. Taliban oppression of knowledge not withstanding, the country is so underdeveloped, with villages being completely isolated, they don't have much access to knowledge of the outside world. I've seen videos of Afghans who never even heard of 9/11 because the Taliban and local tribal leaders kept that knowledge quiet. I've seen other videos of Afghans that (when they were even willing to talk) didn't know much about other cultures outside of their own. They would have no knowledge of African culture, Asian culture, Western Culture, etc. And when some were told about Native Americans they said 'I didn't know America had an original people; I thought America was a multi race country' or something like that.
And for your information, Afghans have been fending off invaders long before the US even existed. Go check up the attempted Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 80's. Not only did they kill almost 2 million Afghan civilians, but they are directly responsible for the hellhole Afghanistan became. Because they destroyed the original Afghan government and left the country in a severe power vacuum. Which gave rise to the Taliban becoming a thing. So if you want to be mad at the US for what they did, don't forget that Russia ultimately started this. And even before Russia, going as far back as Alexander the Great, Afghans have been able to withstand multiple invasion attempts.
Our native American's are the most brave people. A beautiful history.. I lived in OK for years. My Native friends were the best people I've ever known, very spiritual and downright good people.

I married an Aztec indian, he was strong well built hard working man, he ran away to come work in US at age 13, he never served but if he would have had the chance he would have been great, they get called Mexicans but they are not, the Mexicans are a mix of people from Spain Soo they get called that and THIER skin color is not as dark as the true natives, by now with all this drug cartel movement it looks like many people are coming here to the US, if our country would recognize the indigenous people and train them as warriors it may be a benefit to our country and they could be excused from trespassing as this is one big continent, also including the indigenous people of south america because if we are invaded we are going to need ever hand and foot that will stand up for this continent as a whole, they can be trained and go home proud otherwise they are treated as an enemy and we don't need this, after all we have stood together in battle here from the US with all other races and wonder if the indigenous people can stand up and be counted as a whole army, it would be a benefit because they who are immigrants from native blood of this continent as a whole be allowed recognition of some sort of unity with our country , NOT LOOK AT THEM AS CRIMINALS BUT HELP THEM HELP US, if they will stand up to be trained we shall all be the victors, this should be offer only to them as a recognition of tribal stance, if they will not they can go home, be deported and stand by THIER selves come what may.

I served with a few Native Americans, and I always respected their culture, they always reminded me of the Samurai, the way of the Warrior!
My dad was an MP while in service, he was a marine and made for this, we are choctaw, I agree we are to serve and protect even after coming home, my dad was called on for back up when the police needed help, but he would not hire on with them because he would say " I will be in trouble in 5 minutes and your not going to like it", he was quiet but if provoked became a fighting machine it looked like, he was proud of where he stood in life while he served and after out of the military.
The American Native's handshake is a solemn and sincere greeting for me. I never knew my grandfather's name, who was a Native American WWII veteran. Semper Fi from me to you.
The Mohican tribe might not have ever had a warrior tradition, but it's stuff like this that makes me proud to be part Indian.

An Apache named Strand was in Vietnam in the 4th Invantry Division on the Cambodian Border in 1967 he was a great warrior. My Uncle Kieth told me stories of how he saved the platoon on numerous occasions. We decend from warriors also and our Grandfather was a Cherokee mounted volunteer under Gen . Watie in the civil war. Proud to be an American.

Even though my African Ancestors were brought to America in chains. Many of my relatives served during WW2, the Korean and Vietnam wars, and I served during Operation Desert Storm.
Native Americans, I am exceptionally glad that you survived through it all and continue to contribute with your warrior spirit.

I have tears. For the warrior and the history of the Indian.
My step dad not sure which tribe he was from. But he was hung in effigy by Dennis Banks and Russell Means. At Bamige? He was superintendent of the Navajo Hopi res and superintendent of the Souix res. A good man. In my apartment Chief Joseph a poster of my HERO. I grew up spending summers on the Colville res hang out in the bush and woking for my uncle who leased a fishing resort from the Colville tribe. I would hangʻ out with the bears at the dump. My friends were mostly indiàn through my life. I still have a very good friend I talk with every couple of months that is indian in Spokane. We hunted together dranka ran around. Good times. I've held the Eagle Feathers that were Geronimo's an other of my friends a keeper of the feathers. I have long red hair and was a dancer. Now at 81 I still dance and i play music. Another hero is Black Elk Medicine Man of the Souix. I was a Marine 0311 Infantry went to Cuba but not Vietnam. Was always point man in our operations. Had Bear dreams a big part of my life.

Hiteto, hike howaselisimimo, I am member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. My great grandfathers were Marines in WWI and fought in Belleaue Woods, both Grandfather's were Marines Island Hopping in the Pacific in WWII, one Grandfather went on to fight in Korea, two Uncles served in Vietnam, one didnt make it home, two cousins served in Desert Storm, I had a baseball scholarship, but turned it down to serve 12 years in the Marine Corps as an Infantry Rifleman. I did 5 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and wore the eagle feathers my grandfathers carried in WWII and during the Second Battle of Fallujah, when I left for that deployment, my Uncle told me to always put the red lines behind my eyes every morning during thus deployment and I would come home. When we arrived in country we found out we were going to involved in this battle, the bloodiest battle of Iraq, we lost 33 Marines in that battle, over 50% of us that survived were wounded. I should have never made it back from that one, but I think my uncle blessing me helped bring me back. I don't sleep often. March 23 2003, I was with 1/2 Marines and we found the vehicles of 507th. We heard of Lori, I got to visit Piestiwah Peak two years ago. I left tobacco there. They got lost and got out in front of us and encountered the Insurgents and fedeyeen of An Nasiryah. It is March 26, 3 days after her death. My unit Charlie Co. 1st Battalion 2nd Marines we lost 18 of our Marines that day March 23 2003.
My Father fought in Japanese war 2 + years but what really hurts he got no gun salute, we're Lipan Apache.....and they want us to walk with a smile because they say it was God's will for what they did took from us......

Im Choctaw, my dad served, we believe it is our duty to protect this land no matter what people call it, it's still our land as we were put here first ,we did not give it to them, soo they are here like an unwanted weed in a garden, just as they did our grandparents as they looked at them to be the lowest and thrown to the ground as seeds or grass cut to wither and decay, not so for us as our spirit keeps fighting, and we are filled with the spirit of the CREATOR who guilds us, we fight at anytime we are ready to stand and move against our enemy to fight and die if it is prescribed by CREATOR to protect our seed, our family, our friends, our tribes, all of our tribes, and anyone that joins us no matter who they are, we all fight for a common cause in unison to protect our interest in survival, we learned to stand beside the enemy of the past in every conflict we got pulled into, after all we stand against something that is against us that threatens our very existence and we will not be cowering down to anyone because we are the victors that came forward to battle bringing our knowledge as this is what we have had to do to survive, in this we take an oath to serve and protect on thr battlefield and at home again no matter where you at, a warrior you were born to be, a warrior always, you are strong in your beliefs and use this energy to fight, armed with the truth and shield of faith the CREATOR IS STANDING THERE FIGHTING WITH YOU , in some cases it is him we are fighting for to preserve him who makes us strong, we are the survivors, the strongest, we are the warriors, a great welcome home to those who have survived, a great welcome home for those who did not and we thank you for your service, thank you great spirit CREATOR for those who made it home, support the warriors who have paid with THIER lives, and those who live on still support them as most worthy these two types that protect us all.
you dishonor the Creator who BROUGHT NEW PEOPLE to this country for HIS OWN PURPOSES, to build up a great nation on the earth. You do NOT speak for HIM. ( i won't say all of them were supposed to come though). SHAME ON YOU ! and no doubt some of the white man's blood is in your veins, those are also the ancestors of many Tribe members. And the blood of 1st Nations is in the old past generations of many "white" Americans, before there was any enrollment. ETC

Growing up in a Black American family I was taught different things the world around us wasn't always nice, but I come from a military family. My Dad made sure knew our faith our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, our military background and our Cherokee background from him. My mother's side is black, Choctaw and white. I'm still learning but also grounded by faith and my heritage. I've served since 1981

I’m proud of my service to my country and that of my ancestors (on both sides I am descended from warriors who have served this country).I’m not political and I don’t care who claims ownership of this country, it will always be my home. I have a warrior spirit, my first name means courageous, warrior. I also enjoy learning about history all history and science. I’m not ashamed of this country’s past : the good, bad, ugly. We are still here! There is always more nuance to the history we are made aware of. More than either side seems willing to try to acknowledge or understand. I’m here for it though.

I’m Navajo, my uncle James Dixon was one of the original 29 code talkers. I enlisted in the Navy, my two oldest sones enlisted in the Navy too. The oldest was a Nuke Machinist Mate 1st class in the USS Alabama and USS Albuquerque, my middle son served in the surface warfare in the USS Debuque, I was Intelligence Specialist 2nd class.
You will always be in this land ! We did carry out the Powwow tradition where I was stationed in Afghanistan . Native Americans are our guiding angles in this sacred land. Thank you for letting me share this land .

I just paused this video and backtracked to find the name of this soldier Chuck Boers; but l loved the way he and others were talking about what other soldiers assumed that they could do as Native Americans because of preconceived perceptions and l loved that he said that most of them couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag! As an Irish woman from Dublin, we always used something similar about certain self-proclaimed hard men [or women] by saying; They couldn't Fight their way out of a paper bag! I'm gonna use his phrase from now on and add in a "Wet" paper bag 😅 Great video, really enjoying it and getting back to it now ..... I and many Irish people who suffered under colonial rule by Britain love and identify big time with the Native American Tribes as we were also tribal people who suffered for hundreds of years because of the greed of others.

Same sentiments here. The colonist and the US govt even went to the extent of culling all the american bisons just to exterminate the natives since the bisons played a major role in their diet, everyday supplies, tradition and culture.

Great documentary, very interesting and informative, and with great interviews and stories. Those who gave their stories are amazing people. I loved the way their communities had integrating and purifying ceremonies for those who came back from their traumatic war experiences. I never knew so many Native American people fought in the U.S. Army in so many wars. I knew about Navajo code breakers from CZcams videos but never the whole story so thank you for this documentary. I send Love and Respect to All Native American people.

My father was a corporl in the USMC During WW2 Guadal canal Saipan ,Tarawa, back up on Tinian. Then because he had several bronze stars oak leaves and several silver stars , ended up sort of working ,for Admiral King. As did my mom an E5.... Growing up my father told us about the Navahoes and Hopi he worked with..

I have quite a few friends Native Americans have been to a few pow wows I could feel the love the respect and the Hand of God leading these people they seem to be a very spiritual and they do believe in a a power that comes from the Earth the wind the fire the heavens and the water the warrior spirit transcends all because it is what standing up for what is right that makes the warrior and it's a very beautiful thing if you ever get to go to a pow wow you're so humbly and with a humble heart Excel allows you to dance with them do so in the circle of life and thank all veterans for the freedom that you have because they gave it to us with love give them to respect that they deserve
