Dr. Pierson said her mother passed away at 92... as in that was how old she was when she died. This TED talk was in 2013.

I’m currently in college studying to become an educator and watch this video often to recharge me and not lose sight of what I’m trying to achieve. Rest In Peace Ms. Rita.
UPDATE: 3 years later and I am now a teacher/coach at my dream school. I originally was set on teaching elementary, but here I am teaching 8th graders and coaching 7th and 8th grade boys. Be flexible and don’t be afraid to try new things. No matter where you are in your educator journey, don’t forget that kids are/should always be at the center of it! It’s all about relationships.

I hate when people say "more teachers should be like this." I worked with preservice teachers for years, and NO ONE joins the profession without this optimism and passion. No one. So the question should actually be "what happened?" instead of "why aren't more teachers like this?" When we figure out why some teachers can hold on to this mindset for 40 years and some can't, the focus shouldn't be on why they failed at their former happy idealism, but why the SYSTEM chews them up and spits them out so easily. Sapping the passion out of so many, and replacing them with fresh meat every year is a disservice to students, education, and our nation.
+totaldepravity1975 well its the same as medicine school... you can get away with being a poor student in most colleges... you cant get away with being a bad student at medicine because people will suffer and die... and yet it happens... the same you can get away with being bored and out of touch with most jobs but not as a teacher... it will show in your attitude in class and in the results in class... anyway i dont like this kind of teacher... my examples of good teachers were different and i think not unique just rational and patient enough
No one is going to school to become a teacher "for the money". LOL
That is incorrect. Depending on the state that you are in, tenure can actually be very hard to obtain. Educators are judged based upon student standardized academic achievement. Tenure simply ensure that there is a protocol under which teachers are evaluated and are afforded due process. If a teacher leaves a district and moves back, many will lose their level on the pay scale and start back from zero.

My professor showed us this video in our Intro to Ed class and half of the class (including myself) were crying while watching this. lol. Now I'm watching it again because it's that amazing.

I have to watch this for an interview and I legit just started tearing up. When you got it you got and if as an educator you feel emotion while watching this video then you know you're on the right path in life.

I have never cried before because of a ted talks but when she told the story about telling her kids to say "i am somebody" it made me so happy that I just cried for a minute. This is what education should be, and what it can be

It's so weird but I watch this same video every year. This video changed my whole perspective on teaching. I had no idea she died the same year this was posted. I had always wished to meet her but tonight I found out she has passed away. Real tears running down my face right now. She made me a better teacher and never met me. Her legacy lives on through all of us.

I’ll be reaching 10 years as an art teacher and it’s all because of Rita’s advice. I tattooed her quote “Every child deserves a champion” on my arm for all my students to see so they know right away what I stand for. I feel I’m at the peek of my career and everyday with my students is not work, but precious moments together as a community…a family. Thank you Rita for your guidance ❤
As a teacher for more than 30 years, I totally agree with Rita. We teachers should love the kids. If we do not love them, how can we teach them with our most effort?

When the kids say, "I love you, Mrs. Hall," I don't hesitate. I say, "I love you, too." Firstly, because I do, and secondly, they need to hear it.

it brought me to tears watching this video! I grew up in China, where i think the deeply flawed system stole lots of my golden years, and I am working for international non-profit in China on the education programs. I have been trying so hard to advocate for a system, program, component that's measured by psychological outcomes. it hasn't been that easy, and in fact, has been very very difficult and upsetting. But knowing all out there, are doing the same, not giving it up, makes me less cynical, and it gives me the courage to keep working
Ever since I commented on it this daylast year on CZcams. The comment's forwarded thousands of times. Every day, I got notifications on someone that forwarded it. It's been a year. the INGO that I work for has been really paying an increasing amount of attention on social emotional wellbeing of children the past year. And I, of course, continue to work on mental health on the side and has established my own organization as the leading org locally to deal with mental health, my baby, candlex.cn. We are going forward so fast that I forget to look back enough. Thanks to the Facebook memory, I feel proud and grounded this moment:)

No it wouldn't. More parents who stress the value of education and a society that doesn't expect "hero" teachers at poverty wages would.
Who thought that the government should be trusted to run the education system ? The government are Marxist change agents intent on destroying society, removing parental authority and then encouraging chaos in schools and universities. Teachers are servants of their masters so there is NOTHING teachers can do to fix system which has been designed by their masters to self-destruct.
Makes me tear up - "We come to work anyway, because that's what we do." - "We're born to make a difference." - True! I've been teaching for 30 years.
I'm in college studying to be an educator- and I want to be that person, the one that makes a difference. I've had several of these people in my life, and I want to carry on what they've done for me.

My mother was a teacher and she was always tired, always so busy. She never had time for herself and for us. That was why I said to myself and swore to everyone who thought I would walk the same path my mom did that "I will not be a teacher." But after listening to this, I feel like I want to teach. Like I knew all the good things about teaching but because of my fear of not being an effective one made me blur those with all of its negative aspects. But she cleared out the blur. She is so inspiring and encouraging.

I'm graduating in four weeks, and in my French class we've been discussing what we want to do after school. When I told my teacher I had no idea what I wanted except to help people and be happy, she said I should be a teacher. At first, I'll admit I was a bit dubious, but the idea's grown on me, and after watching this, I think if I have examples like this lady to look up to, teaching would be the best decision of my life.

What an example to us all. Never give up on the learners just because they're difficult. You have no idea what kind of lasting impression you may leave on their life. They may never tell you. We need EVERY teacher to be like this wonderful woman!
Remember that you have to balance everything. The mistake I made my first two years teaching was devoting too much time to those "difficult learners" and ignoring the quiet kids who showed up every day and also need a ton of help. We have to not overestimate our worth as teachers as well. We spend about 1 hour a day with kids and we have take an ego check and realize we aren't the be all and end all in all kid's lives. To some kids we will be vital but not to others. While "not giving up" on some kids make sure you aren't ignoring the kids who really need that time and attention from you. Most of these "difficult learners" dropped out despite help and devotion from teachers. Three were shot to death in gang shootings after they dropped out but I don't blame myself. Because I also taught the student who got a Gates scholarship. The difference was attitude, not teachers. Their parents and they have to take ownership as well. Remember, this isn't a Hollywood movie and you can't do it all. Every teacher will not be the same. In your desire to make "EVERY teacher" like this woman, remember the Arizona teachers making poverty wages who can't get by, 571 of whom walked out of their classrooms, never to return within the first month of school this year. You want great teachers but do you want them to have a life and be able to take care of themselves? Remember teaching involves the school, administration, teacher, home life and peer group as well as socio-economics.
What a passionate teacher! It takes huge amount of passion and patience to deal with wide variety of students and bring out best in them
I'll never forget how this video was played in my team with teachers and how everyone found it exaggerated and dramatic. They thought it was very "American". I was so disappointed because it inspired me greatly. That's when I realized something was wrong with today's teachers.

As a Secondary Level Maths teacher, I find it truly inspiring and emotional.. Couldn't stop tears when she was telling about her mother's funeral..
I remember the first time watching this and being mindblown that this woman was the author of the "I am Somebody" Mantra that students in my district recite every morning after the Pledge of Allegiance. I was also applauding when she talked about marking +2 instead of -18 . This woman was amazing, may she rest in peace.

I am a class room teacher. I just love to monitor Ms Pierson; especially when she said kids don't learn from people who they don't love. This means that there must be a strong class room relationship between the teacher and the students. As a teacher, you are equally a parent for the kids you manage through the academic period. Rest in peace our great teacher.

You were chosen!!!! I use that speech every year, and it does wonders for my students' morale! I remind them, almost daily, that they are the model class. "Why do you think you were chosen? Tell me what makes you great." Wow! They find reasons to believe in themselves. It's great!!! They behave better, try harder, and feel proud.
I cant count how many of these I have watched. Hundreds, maybe even more, BUT THIS ONE IS MY FAVORITE!! I wish there were more people like Ms. Rita, our world might be a better place.

I'm from Germany, studying to become an English teacher. Our instructor in a seminar on teaching methodology showed us this video and everyone felt inspired. I wish I could tell Ms Pierson that she's inspiring people all across the world... When I teach school and get trainees, I'll show this to them as well.
Listening at 5:41 and 6:00 brought me to tears too. This just show how great of a teacher her mother was. And I hope to someday be a great teacher to my students too.
Rita Pearson was an inspiring and credible asset to any education system. She is, was, and always will be a great leader for students and educators alike. Her commitment for the education system will always be praised and cherished; What she has taught us will never be forgotten nor outdated.

I love it! The same is happening to my mum now after so many years teaching she has retired. She bumps into old students who are adults now and they thank her. I agree with you, connection is the key :) The emotions play a big role in the process of learning.

This is why I want to be a secondary school English teacher when I am older (I am seventeen years old, and in Year Twelve)! In regards to teachers, my English teacher is my champion. She is only in her second year of teaching, but she has been the best teacher I have ever had. She has been the very first person to truly understand me, and the very first person to truly encourage and nurture my love of learning. She has become my closest confidant, and we actually have an email pen pal system between just the two of us (we are over 100 emails strong!). She knows how much of an impact she has had on me, and she also knows that I desperately want to become a teacher one day. She emailed me the link to this very video (which I LOVE now), and she has even given me the opportunity in class twice to do some mini lessons. As Ms Pierson said, it is so important for a child to have a champion; and I have the very best champion within my classroom walls. She has done so much for me, and I will never be able to repay her.

I was planning to show this to my daughter principle, to show the at a staff meeting. My daughter got a new teacher and I know my daughter very well. She will challenge a teacher, but on more than one occasion I tried to speak to her about my daughter. My daughter would speak to her friends in class do not listen. Last year she did summer camp she had a rough time. In Kindergarten her teacher and assistant teacher took the time to listen to me. She knew I use to talk to them regularly and she could not cut up. She did very well in Kindergarten had 3 and 4s and moved up to first grade. Now her first grade teacher shuts the door every time, I tried to speak to her about, what will help and how she should communicate with my daughter. Friday I pick up my daughter, the first thing she going to say to me, is that my daughter was on red and she disrupt the whole class. She was like my daughter is so smart and her behaviour is going to stop her from improving. If she is a teacher and can't speak to a parent and if my daughter is seeing she not speaking to me she will continue. I can't do anything to help a situation if a teacher, does not try to speak to me. So I will take it up with the principle and ask for my daughter to be transferred to another teacher. Her Kindergarten teachers at dismissal will speak to me. This teacher all she say make a appointment. When I all want to know is how is my daughter doing. She shuts me out and my daughter see this. My daughter do well with teacher's she likes and who takes the time to speak to her on a one on one level. This teacher have attitude of come to work, teacher these bratty kids and can't wait to clock out to go home. God forbid a parent tries to speak to her at dismissal about their day. I am a parent and I tried my best to help a teacher to understand my child. So if a teacher sees it fit to keep shutting the door on me and my child keeps cutting up, I am just going to take to the principle of the school.
I've watched this talk many times and have never gotten tired of it. It is inspirational, humorous and refreshing. I wish I could have met Ms. Pierson, I would have given her a big hug.
