VW ID.4 - First look at the new electric VW

- I was given an amazing exclusive look at a pre-production Volkswagen ID.4 at the VW Chattanooga factory in Tennessee, USA last week. This video covers what I saw and found while crawling around under the car, and under the 'hood', and concludes with answering some great questions that I received via my Instagram account from other enthusiasts.
I looked at the car as an nerdy enthusiast and from a 'tuning' / design view. I am not a car reviewer, so you'll have to look at the other videos if you'd like comparisons to other cars and electric vehicles specifically - I tried to stay on topic, but as you'll see, I couldn't help but review.

Disclaimer and explanation :-)
I have existing sponsorship relationship with the Volkswagen. This access to the ID.4 was by my request, and I was not paid nor given any key points to cover. I was at the factory for another project - not the ID.4 (more info coming soon though, yay!). I got the okay less than 18 hours before this quick video was made, and was given the car and the keys - which I'm very grateful for. I hope you enjoy it. My enthusiasm and excitement and nerdiness is completely real and not for show - but you probably know this already!

I love seeing your excitement Jamie. This is absolutely the future and they can be VERY fun to drive. For me, I am hopping for a rebirth of the Beetle as an electric car... I am a person that clearly doesn’t want an SUV in the USA and maybe I am the only one left, but I like the look and feel of a GTI or Beetle any day.
Wait. Both seats are programmable?!?! Does that even exist in another VW? I swear, I don’t think I have ever had a programmable seat in my 25 years of VW ownership. hahahaha
terrific content as well Jamie! keep going! congrats and I hope new opportunities like this keep coming!
Love the review and your enthusiasm! 🤩
I'm not a fan of the over-saturation of CUVs, but this is pretty cool. It's biggest issue to me is the same with almost every new car, 20" wheels and huge truck sized wheel openings look goofy/impractical on something not built for offroading.
It's wild how much 20" and 21" wheels have become the norm on 'normal' cars..
I don't mind the softroading per se, if it means we get some good luggage and passenger space - but I'm a big fan of the T4/T5 transporters, and wagons (variants), and things like that, haha. I guess I mainly dislike impractical space in a daily driver.. :-)
Even tiny compact cars now come with big wheels....Get used to it.....Paul
8:40 the consistent ID patterning looks more diamond than hex. And I love it!
I agree, and I think I switch the calling it diamond later - although I'm mentally settling on 'Rhombus' now, haha.
@@JamieOrr Haha, a rounded rhombus it is!
Nobody is gonna tell Jamie what a sick t-shirt he has... Okay, I will then!
Thanks, I love this shirt, haha. I added a link in the video description.
In the world I grew up in sick meant unhealthy/dying......I despise people perverting the English language......Paul
@@paulholterhaus7084 LMAO, you're funny as balls🤣. You're so bad bro. Baddest out here.
@@paulholterhaus7084 I'm surprised you're even using the internet.
No one shared front hood of car. Unique review. Thanks.
Everyone focus on inside and outside and not under the hood. Makes sense to put mechanical stuff outside of cabin.
Great Video! Thanks!! I’m looking forward to my 1st Edition I just ordered.
Greetings from Germany!!
Wish we were getting the Id.3!
I guess we'll see the ID.4 does first :-)
Here in the UK there are already quite a few ID.3s around, but I don’t think this one is out yet!
It’s cuz demand in US for hatchback is low. But they said they are gonna make the buzz crossover concept which looks amazing
Have you looked into importing one.
I know I keep saying that
Love the energy and quirky content! Wish he took deeper dive on interior and tech though
I think if there’s one thing I don’t like of the new generations is the interior. I understand them simplistic futuristic look but VW buttons and interiors have always been a favorite
I get what you're saying for sure! Honestly, I really liked the interior - proper buttons for volume (I can't stand changing screens for them, even if they are on the steering wheel), proper buttons for the seat adjustment, and the new steering wheel haptic controls are great.
The gear select is super cool too :-)
Having the AC out front helps it a lot. My lotus has awesome AC because of it.
Super nice this ID.4! 😍😍
Awesome thank you. Can you do a video about modding/tune the e-golf. A lot of us still have these. :)
better looking than the ID3 which looks a bit strange from some angles ,thanks Volkswagen NA for letting us look round a pre production and love the t-shirt 👌🎃
I agree that this has a bit of a different design language than the ID.3 - I still don't notice the rear hip lines on the 4 until I saw it in person from the right angles. I am looking forwards to seeing the ID.3 in person, and what comes down the line. A real R version would be dreamy.
Glad you like the shirt!
@@JamieOrr the ID3 is still better looking tha the T-ROC Cab 😶
I love your enthusiasm Jamie, Is it close to the electric version of the GTI.
Jamie I’m so happy I’m not alone at being so excited about these new cars. Most ev drivers aren’t car people and most car enthusiasts don’t seem to get or want evs. But the new ones from the vw group look so exciting I can’t wait to mod them.
Agreed!! I can't wait for the performance side, and... I already ride my bicycle to work and feel like that 'offsets' my performance vehicles a bit.. using the ID.4 as a daily (from nuclear / renewable electric sources) seems like another fun way to do that perhaps.. Save the petrol for the fun cars !
Counting down the days until ID4 VR6 swaps now. It's a bad idea, but an idea you've brought into this world.
Hahahah, nice.
I much prefer the roller-cover on the cargo space in my VW AllTrack. It looks like the little cutouts are there for the roller-cover, instead of the hard, solid cover.
I wonder if it will change on the final release, or on different trims etc..?
I have a really hard time getting excited about the egg shaped ev’s. I really would love to see the microbus make it to the showroom floor though. I think I would be first in line at my local dealer for that one!
I agree, and definitely agree on the bus.. but.. for whatever reason the 'normal' looking EVs seems to have been ignored by the public. The first gen Prius is an easy example. I don't understand why, but here we are I guess, haha.
looking forward to getting mine :-)
Hi, thanks for the review. Is there a 12 v outlet in the trunk? Need it for my camping fridge. Also the only spec of note wrt Euro is that in USA we don't get a heat pump while Canadians do.
You're so welcome! I honestly didn't notice the outlet - good point! They're traditionally on the right side of the trunk (Passenger side) on VW and I checked the video - we didn't do a close up on that side that I can see, oops. :-)
@@JamieOrr Yes, there is a 12 v charger outlet in the trunk.
So rad. I want the bus
Glad you like it Jordan!
Good vid. Can you convince VW to include a heat pump into the US models? I hear they’re only coming to Canada models.
Imo the hex/diamond logo puddle light when you open the door looks like a Renault logo xD
Will this be in USA showrooms by November?
I love everything about the id4 except the cargo cover. I wish it was an optional retractable one and not that thin string supported one!
Why, this is easier? You can remove it , if you need full opening. Nothing to touch, it just work.
Wow!
Wee Paisley accent sneaking through the excitement there...
Hi how much is that in the market?
Amazing vehicle. I don’t know if it’s the family man in me talking, but I want one so badly. Next summer baby!
What is the Ground Clearance? I need it for slight off-roading
I didn’t measure unfortunately, but VW have produced a video (somewhere.. I can’t find it) that shows it ‘soft-roading’ a bit.
Saw in your last video you grew up in Brighton! Which college did you go to? Also how long since you moved to the states?
Awesome video Jamie
Do you know if it's available in SA
Thank you!
I haven't seen any talk yet, but that doesn't mean much. The charging infrastructure would be the main thing I was imagine. It's been getting much better in the USA but still isn't 'there' yet.
In south africa if it comes it will be high price 750 000 to a million and they will be no free tax incentive or free electricity
Let's lower my 1st edition and take it to WiTW next spring!
Nice!!
I mean......It's funny how close it looks the sides and back to the Peugeot 3008/5008. Come one.
Is the cabin air filter easy to get to?
Unfortunately didn’t get to dive that deep into it with our short time spent with the ID.4 but if i had to guess I would say it’s probably not that difficult.
@@JamieOrr Thank you
i would love to get my car rated by you and get some tips or ideas to do, how can I contact you?
Would it be better to get this VW or a Tesla Model Y?
I am not going to do a comparo, haha, but... The Model Y has a standard price that's 25% higher ($50,000 vs VW at $40,000), so if VW really can compete at that price point, and have a perception of 'better build quality', then it should be an interesting market.
:-)
In USA VW still has tax credits. So 15k $ extra
WOW the seats are 10x better than the ID3.
Jamie, where did you get that cool VW Halloween themed T-shirt?
It's an official VW product, you can find it here or if you're in the USA a local VW dealership parts department can order it too:
drivergear.vw.com/Group/Featured-Items-2646.htm?Jamiesayshellotodrivergearyo
Why didn’t you show inforteintment screen ?
I had really limited time, and it’s been shown lots of other times. It worked well, but if anything I’d liked to have shown more of the gauge cluster and the gear selection - I think that is a really cool design. :-)
The ID 3 and ID4 are allready for Sale in Europe.
The ID.3 is, the ID.4 is not :-)
@@JamieOrr I am about to order a ID4 if I am not deciding for a Tesla in the last moment. They said it could be delivered around Christmas....even before if i am lucky..
Do you think VW will have one for you to make a show car out of it?
Are there aftermarket exhausts available yet?
LOL
looks so much better than the ID3
4:20 Ralph, how dare you?? Fire this guy 😂
I would have ended up talking about part numbers and things, so it’s probably just as well, haha.
Review starts around 2:15.
So strange when you sit your legs are like fully extended. there is no calf room!
The Ionity Charger in Europe Chargers faster than the Tesla Supercharger.
In theory, so should the EA. It will come down to what the battery allows in terms of safe charging with the available cooling - if any of the ID. cars can reach the max output of the EA chargers it will be fantastic :-)
In Europe Teslas can charge on Superchargers and all other CCS networks. Currently there are no EVs that charge at the max rate that Ionity is capable of. 350 kWs is the max and something like a Porsche Taycan can currently only charge at something like 270 kW max.
Teslas can charge at 250 kW on both the newer V3 Superchargers and CCS. The ID.3 currently charges at 100 kW. The ID.4 is listed at a max rate of 125 kW.
Skoda Enyaq cousin for me , more stylish and affordable . Check it out !can't wait for the Vrs Enyaq with 302hp tho won't be out till late 2021 😁🤟 Still love VW tho .
Would have preferred if they had a frunk
IMO it's not the next people's car at this price point. I'm a VW fan and excited about the vehicle but with AWD etc you're looking at almost 50k, even with incentives this is $800 per month. A true 'people's car' is more like $500 per month at the moment. Granted there are people like me spending way too much for cars relative to income and leasing to get into them but this is honestly a lot to pay.
You sold me I think it’s time to put away my Ford Focus for something like this .
Volls wagon?
Rwd? So drifting video coming up? 😁
Maybe from Tanner ? :-)
Please sponsor me some Rims💪😁🇿🇦
Bring back the sport wagons!
The orr fro is gone. That vw tho..
Indeed.. I'm sad about it..!
@@JamieOrr well dang
Damn US folks want the ID3, UK guys want ID4 can we please swap this looks great
I like the exterior looks of the ID3 better, but I REALLY want the ID Buzz.
Im waiting for the bus
I'm sitting at a computer. Oh, you mean the VW bus, you're not sitting at the bus stop. :)
How tall are you? Car looks short for an SUV beside you
It is 4,58m...more an European size of SUV. A small car for US😉
Well with that sort of introduction it is fairly obvious that this review is not exactly going to be an unbiased review so no point wasting time going beyond the first 45 seconds.
That is probably fair :-)
Is this video about the VW or Jamie?
That’s a fair point - my excitement was perhaps a bit over the top. But it really wasn’t meant to be a review.
It comes with 19" steel wheels 😏😀
I wish you'd been a bit clearer about whether you're excited about this car or not. 😂
Lucky bastard you . Hope Volkswagen hooks you with one to modify.
Not too sure I'd slam an electric car. That's a good way to damage the battery pack.
Sorry couldn't take this video anymore, my first and only time. Get on to the product for Petes sake
man, another suv
They brought the Golf Variant Turbo 4Motion 6 speed manual to the USA recently, but everyone continued to buy SUVs, so it's gone away again. SUVs are what the majority of people want here, for better or worse.
But hey, we still get the Golf GTI, and if we lower the ID.4 it'll look more like a stationwagen anyway right? haha :-)
@@JamieOrr true that, i really like the lifted factory variants that came out, like the alltrack and whatever, and you are right, if this does get lowered i suppose it will look more like an estate, and i guess volkswagen does have to cater to what the market wants, it's a shame they dont bring out another special car like the xl1 again, that would be cool.
TBF, the amount of advertising on the Alltrack was much less than the Tiguan or the new Jetta sedan. I think most Americans follow the trends of advertising & if they constantly push SUV & CUV, that's what people will buy. Especially if the fuel market stays depressed & gas is $2/gal.
@@TheCyleRitchie i dont live in america so can't vouch for the alltrack advertising, but, over here in the uk they do push the suvs more too
@@TheCyleRitchie I agree on the advertising - the Arteon was even less marketed I think , oops. Although I do think there's something about pushing what is good to be push, if that makes sense? Limited resources etc.
the wheel designs are crap and I refuse to buy into the deletion of physical controls for HVAC
I have a tough time with all modern wheels, and I do enjoy a nice easy to use switch - I'm glad the volume is super easy and central on the dashboard..
Well, be prepared because sooner or later all new cars will do without buttons on the dash.
It's a somewhat interesting video, but of course this is an infomercial since this guy is paid by VW.
I honestly had to ask really hard to be allowed near the thing, but am definitely am a huge Volkswagen nerd and enthusiast, so I really didn't think I would be disappointed. I hope no one thinks it could be a serious review etc (I doubt it!), but genuinely no one from VW asked me to do it etc. :-)
Frage
Lucky thing, greetings from 🇬🇧 the Uk 😂👍 @_Adrianmay
Hi Adrian :-)
This guy talks too much... He's fully charged! 😉
2 mins in and still he is talking about how he is excited to look at the car. Dude your info to noise ratio is sooooo bad
Its too bad the charging network is not as good as Tesla Supercharger. I would have considered this.
Telsa have definitely got a huge headstart. The 3 years free EA is good (great?), but definitely wild to see how many Superchargers there are around.
They must believe their customers are really stupid & couldn't 'cope' with the charge point in a different position from the standard fossil fuel filler point! The charge point needs to be either at the front or the back of the vehicle or have they not even bothered to ask potential customers how/where they are going to charge their cars!! Nice car but the arrogance of VW continues to surprise (& disappoint!) me?
'V' is 'F' so it is "Folkswagn" actually. 'F' like Florida is the first letter. And omit 'a' when pronouncing, too. 🍻 We Europeans pretty sensitive about VW brand 😁
me, as a european, I don’t give a V
So, basicly a fanboy review.
Pretty much, haha!
Oh please, nothing to be exited about, boring looks, boring performance. I would rather get hybrid Toyota RAV4 Prime.
Please sponsor me some Rims💪😁🇿🇦
