  • This interview was conducted as part of What Once Was’ efforts to preserve the oral histories of Roger Washington Holy Cross, an East Austin neighborhood that was founded by Black professionals after World War II. Many of the neighborhood’s residents centered their lives around community and education.

    It is always nice to remember East Austin before all the development started and the pleasant times growing up on the East side. I remember going to Sims Elementary, Kealing Junior High and later Johnston High school. I remember Brenda's father was the principle of Kealling junior high at the time I went there.I I always admired David Chapel and the Rogers' neighbourhood. I wanted a house just like the houses that were built-in that area.

    Hi Miss Brenda just came across your video about Your Neighbourhood. You have to show us the surroundings, maybe your garden, anything. It will get very boring if you just sit and speak 🗣️🗣️. Hoping to listen to you some more from across the pond. Europe

    The worst poverty is spiritual poverty and you are talking great spiritual wealth so that's why others thought you were rich. You were
