Not many people talk about this, but Fox's censorship was actually for the better. Because the punch line of the jokes couldn't be "penis", the writers were forced to be more creative and thus, made some of the best comedy in television.
It’s a funny thing about a lot of media, art and more. Sometimes restrictions force brilliance, whereas giving people unlimited resources and no rules can bread stale unimaginative crap.
@@Edzi07 you said it right, mate. And we have the Comedy Central seasons as proof of that. Same writers + no censorship= a lot of good of jokes but also some unnecessarily raunchy ones...
While I agree with this in general, I think Futurama is a bad example. Their type of humor rarely relies on stuff that would get them censored, theyre more likely to make a maths joke than a penis joke.
3:30 Bender's disproportionate anger about Kif being pregnant is one of the greatest things I've seen and the way Kif cowers is just the icing on the cake
I also enjoyed the Comedy Central episodes of Futurama. A lot of people just didn't get the jokes and the first four seasons were "peak television," no doubt.
@telphex4471 Thanks for agreeing. Futurama is also one of three adult animated shows I can still stand to watch the latest seasons of, South Park and the more underrated American Dad being two others.
@BananaQuagmire-kv4qi Not to me and as I said before, a lot of Simpsons / Family Guy / Rick and Morty fans are not giving up on their shows in later seasons.
I was thinking that maybe Hulurama is not so bad, I'm just holding it to a high standard because I have fond memories of the earlier seasons. But no, the new episodes don't compare to the older stuff even a little bit.
I find the new season lacking due to the direction of the writing to include stupid pop culture references over cleverly crafted jokes. They're still there, the clever jokes, but I think the show should've ended when it did. That last scene of the first episode of the season, when Fry talked about cancelling and binging, I think it was a warning.
i know its too much fleeting relatability, but like you said, some of the jokes are still good. its better that it exists than if another 3 soap operas existed with that budget
@@exeterd9 And I refuse to give up on South Park and American Dad either. Sigh. Would be so much easier if one of these shows just did a final season already.
You forgot the best one: Fry: blow-drying his hair in front of the rocket thruster Leela: "What're you doing!? You just got a huge dose of radiation!" Fry: "And great lift."
I heard it was pretty solid, the trailers were worse than the actual product. It may not top the previous seasons, but it's still the same type of humour and writing the series is known and loved for. I think the references to modern stuff loses its place since Fry was from 99, but they were always a part of the show so I can't say the modern references are truly out of place
I feel like the references are too timely. They could be forgotten or feel niche after a while. And the cadence or rhythm feels off a bit. Like the natural chemistry the voice actors seem to have in the earlier seasons seemed a bit forced. I still think it’s funny and probably being a bit biased of course, but just doesn’t have the same kick to it.
Early Futurama had a great timeless quality and holds up really well event today while the Comedy Central era lost it by becoming increasingly more topical and thus dated. I hope hulu can recapture than timelessness but I'm skeptical. Please don't become another Simpsons.
There’s a new Futurama? In today’s Woke West World? How could it be funny, lol, when it was always about ironic irreverence, dark, yet simultaneously somehow, lighthearted, edgy, sardonic humor? It was so awesome!🥹
Futurama was the best, no matter the era, but I disagree. The seasons after they got brought back to life by comedy central were GOLD. Maybe fewer gratuitous jokes, but so much more endearing stories
In the Fox seasons there was alot more character writing and consistency at play (not to mention the jokes were funny and aged ok instead of the lousy "new simpsons" humor of "heehee wouldnt it be funny if iphone was eyephone and susan boyle was susan boil"). Imo this made the emotional moments of earlier seasons hit more since we knew these characters and bonded to them. Since comedy central it seems like the characters are just a revolving door of which character is going to act completely braindead for the sake of a joke (fry might as well have been lobotomized with how he acts). I think alot of this is due to the budget cuts of the later seasons (I remember reading somewhere that they fired alot of the writing staff in transition - i guess they chose the wrong ones to lay off).
