  • Ian reviews the Lost Smooth Operator surfboard: www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/lo...
The Lost Smooth Operator surfboard looks absolutely stunning with beautiful clean lines and the uber-cool, retro Smooth Operator decals. Along with a few other "mid-lengths" the Smooth Operator is set to re-ignite the interest in the classic double ender or performance egg.
There is a definite trend or movement towards slightly longer, performance mid-length surfboards at the moment which is probably occurring as a direct result of busier line-ups and possibly because older guys and girls are maintaining a better level of fitness and are less likely to opt for a "funboard" or the much maligned mini-mal or longboard.
The all new Lost Smooth Operator is all about catching a heap of waves and surfing them with timeless style. This amazing board paddles like a longboard and encourages a relaxed "trim and glide" style that is, and always will be pleasing on the eye.
Matt had been interested in designing this style of board for a while but as usual had his own take on what was required.
The Smooth Operator has a really low entry rocker (pretty par for the course) for paddle speed and early wave entry, with the wide point forward and a nose and tail that both measure the same at 12" and 24". This surfboard paddles and glides like a dream and turns better than you'd ever expect thanks to the 'Biolos' tail rocker which covers the whole rear third of the board and allows the board to turn much faster. There are deep double concaves, vee panels and turned down rails which promote speed. The Smooth Operator has been equipped with a comprehensive Quad + 1 fin system (either Futures or FCS II quads) giving plenty of setup options; ride it as a single fin, a 2 + 1 or quad. We reckon the larger sizes will really benefit from the 8" fin where a centre fin (or 2+1) will get the board turning and offer some extra control in larger waves.
If we don't have the Lost surfboard you're looking for, or the stock dims don't work for you, just give us a ring on (44) 01243 674250 or email info@boardshop.co.uk and we'll happily discuss a custom order for you.
We're absolutely stoked to be stocking Matt Biolos' amazing shapes and would happily consider taking your old or unwanted surfboard as a trade-in against a new Lost surfboard.

Great review mate. I like how you cover multiple aspects of the board use, including duck diving ability and nose shape attached to that. Things that often get forgotten or overlooked in place of performance.

This board looks very similar to my Dick Van Straalen (DVS), Reef Runner, built in 2013. I’ve found that these mid-length style boards are very effective for the larger mature surfer. Biolos’s boards are great, as are DVS’s and he is an Aussie shaping legend.

How does it compare to the HS Plunder? Could I use it as a grovelor instead of a 9 foot Mal?

How does this board compare to the lost crowd killer round? They look very similar but with different fin options. I’m having trouble to decide what board to buy. Dim wise: I’m 6’2” and 95 kilos average surfer in the Netherlands. Cheers

Tim, the crowd killer is basically a big version of the quiver killer, so modern shortboard rocker, proformance glass, tri fin set up etc. This board looks to be more of a style, momentum & glide style board. The crowd killer would be more user frendly & more like surfing a shortboard where this one is more of a classic style flow board. What did you go for in the end?

Could you tell me how this compares to the ci mid? I’m wanting to buy a mid length to surf everywhere in San Clemente, from San Onofre to lowers on a big day; I want something that will glide and be manuevarble; and I’m totally split between the two

I have a 6'8" and I'll throw in an 8" single fin when I go out at San O. Does just fine at the point.

Easy, buy the Lost Smooth Operator from us. We do not stock Chilli and havent tried the Mid Strength out so our pick would be the Lost model.

Single is ok but I'm unorthodox and these boards work great set as quads.
