On this episode of @StateOfSoccer we are heading across the pond to West London where we have a date with one of the best looking stadiums in all of world football!
This is Fulham FC's Craven Cottage! Archibald Leitch's masterpiece, and the pride of Fulham. We were lucky enough to be led through a full private tour by Ed Vanson. Ed showed us around the turn-styles, stands, inside of the cottage, shared with us some of the the best views, and taught us so much history on the way!
I have laid out a full time stamps, so feel free to jump around the tour! My last request is 'hit like,' subscribe, and leave us some feedback if you enjoyed the tour!

Brings back special memories for me back in 1961 joining Fulham as an apprentice professional when I was 15 then signing as a professional at 17years old. I was so lucky to play with great players like Bobby Robson George Cohen Rodney Marsh Johnny Haynes Fred Callaghan and many others. I loved my time at Fulham and it will always be very special to me to play for such a great club.John Dempsey ex player.

John - thank you so much for stopping by the channel! You’re a true legend at Fulham, Chelsea, and of course for Ireland!
As a Philly native over here in the states…my only question is how were you ever able to adjust to that Veterans Stadium ‘Astro Turf’ after all of those years at the Cottage, and Stamford Bridge? 😅

...but I've heard that not many actually liked playing with Johnny Haynes, especially towards the end of his career.

@@StateOfSoccer Thank you for your kind comments. Yes it was very difficult to adjust to playing on AstroTurf after playing on grass and it was hard on your legs and especially your hamstrings which took a while to get used to. Most of the stadiums we played on when I was with Philadelphia Fury were AstroTurf so over time I got used to it but I still preferred grass. I enjoyed my time in Philadelphia which I will never forget. Stay Safe

@@edwardshirley9314 Hi Edward in my time playing with him he was a lovely man and the best passer of a ball I ever played with. Like any player the standard of Johnny Haynes sometimes if he never got a pass from a colleague to his feet when playing he would have a go because he expected better. A great player and a lovely person.

I grew up on the other side of the river, directly opposite the ground, so I was able to read my books by the light of the floodlights that shone into my room and could tell the scores from the noise of the crowds. My first match there was at the age of ten, in 1971, and I've been a Fulham supporter ever since.

Fulham fan here - what a delightful video! I'm so glad you liked our ground.
I just wanted to highlight 16:10 in your video. There's a flag hanging on a wall that says "RIP Tony Warner". Tony very sadly died of Covid last year, but he was our official Number One Fan. He attended every single match whether home, away or abroad. He also carried the trophy out at Wembley when we were in the play off final there in 2018. He was a very recognisable figure and I often chatted to him when we were away at some far flung northern club.
I originally posted this to give a bit of context to any casual watcher of this video, but it's just made me think how wonderful of my club to have a tribute to him up on the wall. I would never have seen it as I sit down the other end and haven't planned on another stadium tour (I went on one years ago and I go to the ground every other weekend anyway!). So thank you very much for that!

Funny the guide saying that Fulham like their 4-0 home wins. I have been to Craven Cottage for a game twice; the second time was for an FA Cup tie in 2011 between Fulham and my team, Spurs. Fulham won 4-0; it wasn't the most enjoyable 90 minutes of my life, but I absolutely loved the ground. I had a great time sat in the Johnny Haynes stand bantering with Fulham fans - Fulham have been a bit of a second team for me ever since and I'm pleased about their return to the premiership this coming season. Maybe they will manage to stay up this time...

Not many old school, working class grounds left. Luton's, Kenilworth Road is also one of the last. Still crammed into the terraced streets that once housed the supporters. Today's concrete & steel constructions are soulless. I love being right on the pitch, in a crescendo of noise. Oh how West Ham miss that!

Oddly enough Fulham tend to get their support more from Putney and Wimbledon and down the A3. The locals in the immediate area would love to see Craven Cottage go the way of Highbury or Bradford Park Avenue. The moment that Fulham so much as hint of a ground improvement, out come the petitions.

Really good video. If you want to see a really old fashioned ground come up to to Pittodrie in Aberdeen. We don’t have a pavilion but a very old granite wall in the same style.
Craven Cottage is amazing. They have treated it with respect whilst modernising it.

Thanks for the kind words. You better be quick they are planning to demolish Pittodrie. Mind you they have been planning that for 20 years. Problem is we were ahead of the game. We went all seated in 1978. The other Scottish clubs took another 20 years and only did it because of Hillsborough. so we have a decaying Old/Modern ground. The worst of both worlds. Also our ‘link’ to Atlanta Utd in the MLS is a joke. Our chairman has strong links to Texas

The white house at Cliftonville FC's Solitude stadium in Belfast, Ireland is an old, listed pavilion if I'm not mistaken. It is still there today. The club was founded in 1879 and as such is Ireland's oldest football team.

@@StateOfSoccer I'm a Chelsea fan too. Many of us like Fulham in a patronising kind of a way (I realise that's a one way thing). Back in the day I used to go to Fulham games when Chelsea were away and until recently I lived walking distance from Craven Cottage. Apparently from the top of the new stand you can actually see the home of the European Champions clearly - it's less than two miles away.
