  • From silent films and Hollywood classics through the Golden Age of television, the curators at the Library of Congress painstakingly maintain its archive of 1.4 million films and video recordings as a time capsule of America as told through moving images. Martha Teichner goes underground for a look at this a national treasure.

Now, it’s a race against time to save these films from deteriorating.

Much credit goes to the generosity of David Packard for this facility!

Finally a place that is almost as diverse as the Victorville Film Archive in it's film selection. 4 bags of popcorn for coming so close to the VFA... however, I'm going to add another bag of popcorn to make it a total of 5 bags of popcorn simply because of the significant importance of film preservation. So, good job.

Support film preservation, at taxpayer expense, but Library of Congress needs to make this publicly available. As of date of this comment on CZcams not really publicly available on CZcams or any other public site that I know of.

They could really only do that to works that are now in the public domain, so probably films from the 1920s and earlier are all-clear. But the copyrights of works from the 1930s onward are still in effect, so they could only release that either with the copyright owner's permission, or once that copyright expires.

That is true, but consider if the CZcams servers all fried. Even the redundancy servers. Everything, gone. There was still be the most culturally important CZcams videos stored inside that vault.

Library of Congress would be considered an offsite backup of CZcams.

And theres still videos on youtube you can never find again... even on the waybackmachine site to go back to look. Its not ALL forever content.. Theres even movies and films from the 90-2010s I simply cannot find for the life of me online.. If it wasnt for someone posting it on youtube or on a "sketchy" site they'd prob be lost. Shoot even DvDs and VHS all that stuff is gonna go POOF eventually.

Not just film preservation, but also the machines needed to play all that media to transfer it to lossless digital formats.

Hopefully our current administration won’t find out about this a defund it. Money well spent, but I sure some will think (working vacations) on the golf course are more important. Keep the arts alive.

Is it just me or the interviewer seemed to be completely uninterested and puzzled as to why they were trying to preserve film heritage?

Saving old films has gotten a lot easier thanks to "Archangel." It's an automated digital fixer that was used on the restoration of World at War which had every headache imaginable.

And that is only the Library Of Congress, but there is also the Smoking Room Of Congress with the best tobaccos in the world, think of Jamaica and Cuba. Then there is the Billiard Room of Congress with the finest pool tables and the largest collection of Beers in the World! Although, it seems that these locations are secret.
