    Just replayed the trilogy a few months back. My opinion of the first Splinter Cell actually went up all these years later. It was a really fun adventure.
    I always held it and Pandora in the same regard, but now I enjoy it way more. It has a touch of quality that wouldn't return to the series until Chaos Theory, and some of the levels are my favorites in the series (most notably Defense Ministry, Presidential Palace, and especially CIA HQ). It absolutely has some stupid parts (the large room with the flags in Chinese Embacy 2 can go to hell) and the lack of quick saves is almost torture at times, but for a first entry in a series, its a damn fine game imo.
    When it first came out I thought it was the coolest, most advanced game in the world, lol. Really captured the interest of a young me. I'm glad to say it still holds up all these years later.
    I'm excited to see what your thoughts on the rest of the series are. Its a bumpy ride, but its worth it. Cheers!

    I have fond memories of the first Splinter Cell - even though it was kind of frustrating at points, the interesting traversal of maps was cool, and the lighting system seemed totally cutting edge at the time. Having said that, Chaos Theory blew it out of the water. It refined everything set out by the first game and Pandora Tomorrow, and changed the way you approach levels. It was a bit more forgiving, as you weren't quite so fragile, but it felt like you failed a mission even if you managed to complete it in a sloppy way. Pandora Tomorrow was cool, and some set pieces were great, but I think that the main selling point of that game was multiplayer, which I think may be dead in the water now.

    Absolutely check out Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory. PT is more of the same thing you got with SC1, akin to a full length expansion pack. CT, however, is a massive step up and alleviates a lot of the frustrations that the first two games are loaded with. Either way I'm glad you were able to get through the trial and error nature of the first game to enjoy it, I think that's the biggest hurdle to overcome when playing it in the modern day.

    I clearly remember this game introduced me to real time shadows which blew my mind! the memories is still very fresh when I saw the sun peering through the window blinds and casting shadows on Sam as i went past them. this is also the game that introduced me to the bloom effect and when I first played it in 2006 i thought i was the coolest gamer in town. 🤣

    The PC version allow you to adjust your speed subtly with the mouse wheel making it imo easier to gauge how fast your able to get away with moving on certain surfaces.

    • @Jay_Sullivan
      @Jay_Sullivan Před 3 lety

      When crouched, the lowest setting is safe. The second lowest is mostly safe. The third lowest can be mostly safe as long as you don’t use “move left” or “move right” and “move forward” at the same time. By “mostly,” I mean you should be stealthy as long as you’re not very close or on a loud surface.

    I loved this game as a kid, but I also never beat it because the last mission is insanely hard from what I remember. You’re getting shot at by like every guard from every direction and they have NVGs on too, so hiding in the dark doesn’t even work. That said, I miss true stealth games like these.

    The stickycameras are an interesting one, they may seem useless but if you get into the rhythm of using them for headshots they knock people out and they bounce off of their heads so they can be picked up, they're great for no-kill runs and that's what I did:D

    I wouldn’t call myself a spy game fanatic, however, the Tom Clancy series is a stand out franchise at that. Excellent gameplay and very good action packed fun. Its only issue is the person-to-person quick combat. Even though, you are more than welcome to go blazing through enemies, they did not impliment it well enough to be worth it.
    For me, the stealth way is the only way. Feels tense but never unfair.

    Splinter Cell is an amazing franchise. The last game in the series, Blacklist I think, also doesn’t get enough love, imo. Chaos Theory and Pandora Tomorrow both improve on the first and they improved on each other. Blacklist does come away from some of its roots but it’s still a great game.

    • @DeltaAssaultGaming
      @DeltaAssaultGaming Před 3 lety +2

      Nah Blacklist wasn’t good at all. They had Horde missions where you just gunned down waves, which sucked. And stealth missions that failed you if you were detected at all. But there weren’t any quicksaves to help you. Bad game design.
