Splits vs Ducted Heating and Cooling Systems - Building Envelope

  • Ductless + Building Envelope VS ducts.
    Mini Split systems are really efficient. Can you even compare these systems to a gas ducted heating system or an Evaporative cooling? The Evaporative cooling system and ducted heating system can be responsible for some serious overheads of heating and cooling in a home. We cover some of the pitfalls of split system installations and explain why a split system combined with a well-insulated/airtight home is the best way to go in the future.
    If you are organising a new split system, make sure you DIY the air tightness part while the installers are doing the install.

    Great information. But I have a ducted reverse cycle air-conditioner which you don't mention. I would love to know how this compares.

    Love your videos. I’m sharing them around. We are wanted to do a full blown Reno and I want to create as sealed space as possible. Considering heating and cooling issues. Based in melb, Vic. How do you feel about radiant heating? Hydro or electric? Video on it?

    Great vid mate. The first one I have seen that legit talks about the Dakin US7. I have called Dakin dealers in QLD and even they have limited knowledge of that product. Its soo painful. I live in far north west qld where the air is dry most of the year cept the when we get a good wet, so I am after something that humidifies the air.

    Energy efficiency saves money.
    Air sealing, super insulation, triple pane windows, high efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, energy efficient appliances, LED lighting, set back thermostats, solar panels with battery storage and a electric vehicle charger in the garage or car port. All these need to be considered in any new build or remodel.

    Nice video,,,,I was going to ask,,,,,question,,,! In mini split sistem ,what the superheath,,should be ?

    We are going to try and cook our well insulated house with a single split (2.5KW) unit mounted on the top floor in the central, open staircase area. Might use it as a bit of heating support as well, but mostly it's for cooling. We have a central ventilation system with heat recovery that should help as well. I hope it will do a good job an run efficiently for a long time.
    Putting up a fan or two to help spread the air around a bit more is also on the agenda, but I want to see how it does without first.

    I like the efficiency of splits, but our walls are already quite busy and I really don't like the idea of multiple heat units inside and heat pumps outside. What do you think of ceiling cassettes for split systems?

    • @ecoevo
      @ecoevo  Před 2 lety

      Multiple Ceiling cassettes are still going to need multiple heat pumps outside.
      Don’t forget, the better your building envelope, the less splits you require, and heat recovery ventilators can also assist moving the energy around the building. For a more evenly conditioned conditioned space.

    What about replacing the Gas ducted with RCAC ducted system.

    • @ecoevo
      @ecoevo  Před 4 lety +1

      We don’t talk RCAC, but we probably should have. It can suffer from the same issues as ducted heating. Leaky ducts/return connections. Also the larger the unit the less efficient. You’ll notice the smaller the mini split the higher the star rating.

    • @mirboo72
      @mirboo72 Před 4 lety +1

      Ok. I installed ducted RCAC upstairs regrettably with the plan to install down stairs underfloor but now want to add 2 split 2.5/3.5 kw units for better efficiency and zoning after following you channel of info.

    Net Zero and Passive House design techniques should be the standard for all new buildings.
    Wasting money on high utility bills makes no sense. A tight home can go with a smaller system.

      Net zero is impossible. Net zero is about enslaving the population of the planet not saving the earth.
      I agree with your second sentence however.
