I am a survivor of a Tennessee F4 tornado in Hendersonville, 20min North of Nashville.
April 7, 2006 my life changed forever. 12 people died that day from the tornado in my county. I had just picked my oldest son up from kindergarten. My husband called me to say a funnel cloud was spotted not far from the school and take cover at home. So Jair 6, Cole 3 & I, 34, took cover in our basement. I was on the phone with my husband who was & still is a Brentwood Fireman. My last words were “I know, it here, got to go. “ I scooped each kid up with an arm and laid on top of them, using my body as a shield.
My neighbors who were farmers knew I just got home bc we would always come down after getting home for a snack & so the boys could feed the cows. After he, his wife & daughter came out of hiding they didn’t see my house. He came with his family and my other neighbor searching for us. All that was left was our SUV, a pile of bricks & a partial basement wall. They searched the fields for 30min and came back to the house. It was then that Cole popped up from the bricks. I was found dead still laying on top of Jair who was unconscious. Cole was covered in blood but didn’t have a scratch on him. It was my blood. Jair was kept overnight at Vandy Children’s hospital for a minor concussion.
I on the other hand was revived multiple times. I had a spinal cord injury
T12 was crushed, T8, L1 & 2 were also badly damaged that left me paralyzed below the waist, both lungs collapsed, sever head & brain trauma fractured skull & 5 broken ribs. They also thought I was going to lose my left eye. It was so swollen that it was bulging out of the socket.
I am Amy (Hawkins) Golden. I have been on Extreme Makeover Home Ed - Hawkins Family, Oprah, & the Doctors 2x. We were Europes fav EMHE ever.
I do not regret for a moment what I did for my children and would do it again. I told them if I had to come out of my wheelchair I would.
Jair is now a Portland TN fireman & paramedic and Cole is a Combat Medic in the Army w/ the 101st Airborne Div

As a medical malpractice survivor, I’d just like to note how horrendously inappropriate it was for the medical practitioners in this man’s room to have thought for even a moment that it was ok to talk about someone so negatively right in front of them. I love this man’s attitude, but, he should have never have had to even write that sign. That constitutes abuse that he even felt the need to.
As a disabled combat vet of the Iraq war era, just throwing this out there.... maybe there was something bigger at play and he was meant to hear what was said. He would have never written/made the sign had he never heard the conversation. And, if he never made the sign, it would never have inspired however many thousands of people that it did and helped them out of their own head. Most of your comment sounds like it comes from someone with a victim mindset. Should they have said it in his room...probably not, it's just something he happened to overhear because they thought he was out. People overhear things all the time that they shouldn't. It's what they do with what they heard that matters.

When I arrived from Vietnam at Brooks in San Antonio in bad shape I Thought. They put me in the burn and amputee ward. I learned fast how blessed I was to have all my limbs and not disfigured from urns

An inspirational American hero! Navy Seals are especial on all levels. A cut above the rest, mentally, emotionally and physically. I have had the honor of working side by side with these men at two of the top firearm manufacturers. They truly are supermen.

Megan, thank you ,I think this is the best interview you have ever done, and it appears to be a turning point to me. I am a Veteran, turned Earth Shaman. I take Extrema joy every day, even though I drag along the blocks hurts and pain of the past. I heard him say even though I did not hear the words. It is a new day, an extension of the (our) moment, we (I) now have the choice to move out of our brains and into our Hearts. Let us move forward together.

I can't lie. I listed to the podcast, but wanted to see what you looked like after all the surgeries. You are so handsome, and your service to our country is immeasurable. When I pray, I thank God for the brave people like you who protect us. I taught elementary school for the past 45 years. The past 10 years have been in Catholic school, so we pray before every class. My students and I prayed for "...those who protect us at home, and abroad." I wish I had been able to show the middle schoolers your story.

This guy is amazing, but never forget the brass, the commanders that gave him the chance when he wanted to quit. Just a normal here, but I was tired and wanted to see my girl, and I too quit, jump school at Fort Benning Ga. The Commander sat me down and fixed my head. My life would have been so different if the commander had just swept me under the rug. I owe that man everything.
