I really need to start looking here in the comments for this... thanks
Watching in 2021 while Bri is in hospital. Your little ladies sounds so precious & sweet talking to the chickens. What precious memories & sweet little voices to go back and listen to. Please enjoy each day tough or not, you'll miss this I promise. Empty nest is a new season for us, good yes because we have a special bond, not just the kids ya know.... God is so good....so so good ❤
That was wonderful of Justin to gift the chickens & everything that came with them to y'all. Such a boon to the homestead! I'm so happy to see they're at a place where they'll be cared for well.
🌾Merry meet 🌿
Oh my word, SO FUNNY. "Good job, Kai!" Good job Gracie being a gracious older sister, also.
You could also use Black Oil Sunflower Seeds for protein/energy. Our birds (and goats) love it!!
Great job mixing up the grains for the chickens.....this will save a whole lot of time on a daily basis as well as keeping it away from those pesky mice. We are having our first snow here in Richmond, Va. today. Supposed to get about 4" in our part of town. Good day to stay in and make some of Bri's apple crisp. Have a blessed day. Margaret
You are definitely keeping your birds happy...and your audience too.
Loved. Your video, it must be so fun going out every morning to that view, the chickens and goats!!!!
Yes, just what I was looking for. great video. beautiful chickens. thank you
We completely understand the joy that Bri and Art get spending time with the animals, we have 6 hens, 5 chicks and a 4 month old piglet they are a constant source of joy. The chickens now lay enough eggs that we sell some and it pays for their food each month yay.
Kirsty Trembath I love those animals! In some countries baby pigs are killed for food often.
THANK YOU for showing us the AWESOME CHICKENS its fun to see OUR favorite chickens on CZcams...Kye got her name from a subscriber request that the the BEAUTIFUL ONE got from a lady she had lost her husband and she asked them to name one of the chickens her husband name so BEAUTIFUL ONE gave that name to the first chicken born isn't that neat !!!
The Beautiful One has such a kind heart! Lol, the girls were pretty darn cute in that conversation though...made me smile.
Short Grub, I had NO idea! Thanks for telling us that story!
THE video named Hello Brooder is where she explains it ..:-)))
ART and BRI did Justin get new chickens🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔
short grub who are you talking to
oh i loved that little bit after arts intro, the shot of the farm, the clouds, the rain etc. beautiful. all your beautiful photography would make a amazing calendar. maybe you could even sell in the local shops?
Just about to mix my own today for the first time after only using layer pellets. Thanks for the information. Lovely video as always!
3 parts corn
3 parts wheat
2 parts peas
1part fish meal
1 part oats
Thank You
Can you subsists corn ?
Slv_surfer I hear corn is mostly calories and will make your chicken put on weight which can be good in the cold winter. It may not be great always because a chicken that too fat may find it difficult to lay eggs.
Oats are bad for chickens. They can't process the beta gluten.
2:55 "Good job Kai!" Awww bless

Ya'll are awesome. Thank you for sharing this.
Oh no!! Mown down in the prime of life by a speeding chicken! Whew - that was close!! :D
I LOVED your time lapse of the snow!! It scared me when Joyful dropped the egg - so glad it didn't break!
Hi Art! I had asked you about how you mix this together and what you used- you promised me a video and came through on it! Thanks for keeping your word! Beautiful video and awesome info! Take care and God bless you and your family!
Loved the video. The Ice cap was beautiful.
We use Justin's combo too. Mostly anyway (found it hard to get kelp around here that was not crazy expensive). Our chicks don't seem to dig the corn until it has soaked for about 3 days. So we're soaking more. I'm going to set up a "3 bucket system" to get it all going & sprouting. That way they have eat the "third day soak" every day. Ours dig sunflower seeds. So I mixed that in too and did less corn. It's a great combo I think with his recipe. BTW: Any leftover in the pan freezes to the pan in winter! LOL
So adjusted the amount we give. And I've been taking out what they don't eat at the end of the day and saving it to refeed or tossing in run when warm. It sprouts there and they dig that up.
Keep 'em coming! Love watching you all. :)
really lovin the music on your vid thanks for the info on mixing feed
I'm glad your feeling better
I really love watching the same flock. they look very happy.
love watching the morning "escape"
Thanks for showing your beautiful morning and the recipe for the basic chicken ration along with the other vital free choice items! Thanks also for picking us up and dusting us off after being tipped over by a hungry "dino" !!! LOL!!!!!
thanks for the time lapse Art you remembered
Thanks for clearing up what aragonite is, my feed place hadn't heard of it. I already feed them oyster shell grit but thought it must be some sort of rock based mineral. excellent stuff
I like it when Art ask are we all ok,
What a nice, wholesome feeling it must be to have everything on your homestead coming together! I have said this before to the Rhodes too: You guys are putting a POSITIVE face on Americans. My opinion has definitely improved towards our southern neighbours (Canadian here haha)
All the best!
This was great, I have been researching "large chicken hutch" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Machaaldity Coop Blaster - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my m8 got great results with it.
Beautiful thank you!!!
I wonder if Grace is old enough to start a mealworm colony. It's small and simple enough that it could go in a spot indoors. That would be an easy way to make up some protein, as well as the veg based stuff (and the maggot bucket I saw Justin make). We will probably do it in Spring when we start up with quail again.
Clever Kim's Curios t
TT
I tried feeding peas to my chickens , but found they wont eat them, so now they get whole wheat, oats and black oil sunflower seeds, which they absolutely love. O ya, I also give them laying mash and oyster shells for strong egg shells. Thanks for the video. Alberta Canada.
whew, chicken in the face. That woke me up.
thanks for showing us that
You can use crushed egg shells for calcium, too.
can you make a video on what you feed your goats? i am getting goats soon and i dont know what they eat
great video, just came across your channel! do you know if I can substitute anything else for the corn?
its so beautiful place ...
Great video guys! Thank you for breaking it down like that . I had a different recipe that involved a ton of calculations so this is much simpler! Could you talk some more about why your pre-soak the grains, how much you soak at a time etc? Also where will you be getting your grains from once your supply from Justin is used up?
Good ideas. We will try and cover this stuff soon. It will be a while before we have to buy grain though.
After you mix the grains, do you mix in the fish meal and nutribalancer when you want to feed them or just put on top and mix in barrel?
Do you ferment your feed like Justin does? I am looking into mixing my own feed and am wondering if the fishmeal gets mixed in before the fermenting.
Thanks for the video. No problem with your chickens stuffing down those peas? Also, when you say "whole grain" are your wheat and oats hulled?
Cook or soak and sprout wheat or rye or corn or barley. Nutrition value increases greatly and is about the only way to beat the system. Otherwise pellets at .22 cents a pound from a good producer is the way to go for the main free choice feed. Pasture is even better than all when available.
nice mixture! but my experience is that there is nothing better then letting them free range and get bugs.
Untill a coyote eats it
I agree and free range too but they still need the grain and all that as well
Just curious but what was the cost of all the bags of goodness to make your own chicken feed?
I bought a mm2 pro monster mill, powered it with a gas engine thru a jack shaft, I can process 100 pounds of corn, 50 pounds milo, and 50 pounds od wheat or barley, in about 15 minutes, then I take that and feed it dry, or miv it with cooked ground meat, (usually feral hog) and supplement with garden refuse or water hyacinth, I feed about 200 chickens
At 3: 40 recipe starts
Thats was funny...gosh I about got trampled by a bunch of chickens LOL
"They both have poop on them"....hahaha...too cute....sounds just like our girls! Thanks for the recipe and great video!!
The girls are so precious.
nice video, thanks
How many time we feed our chicken sir
Art and Bri, just catching up on some videos. Can you remind me if you bought those grains locally or did you have them shipped in? Thanks again!!
Im curious about this myself.
Where do you get your whole grains from?
Where can you purchase the feed peas
Where do you get the whole bulk grains from? Thank you!! We are moving 2 hours outside of Asheville and are looking for a supplier of soy-free GMO-free feed for chickens and pigs. Thanks again!!
i would suggest one part wheat and using the other 2 parts as barley. wheat should never be used with young chicks. i also use molasses. (never molasses with sulfur in it). i also add rabbit feed for the alfalfa in it.
its cold here in colorado also -5 at night i think its up to 10 now
I don't think it got that low here in Pueblo, happily! Hope it warms up for you like it did here today :)
Wondering where you purchase the ingredients for your feed? I would love to find the elements in paper bags like that. It appears that you are in PA, we are in WA. Appreciate the video, thank you!
Quick question. what kind of peas do you use in the mix?
Please what is the ratio to mix 10kgs layer chicken feed with maize, corn, soya beans, millet, and wheat
Art what happens to the chickens when it snows? Do they go inside a barn?
Corn is a heating feed also. One might not want to use it in the summer say in the lower tier of states. Fla, Ariz, NM/ectWhere I used to buy grain before I moved to where I am now, they used to give you the equalivent of #300lbs IF you bought a ton or more. compared to a ton of grain they had to sack up. I had been buying in barrels, #300 per barrel, till I realized I could buy a ton and save the equal of #300 for the same amount in bulk. Well, a ton will fit easily in a 1/2 ton pk bed. As I said in another vid. Im 70. So, when I pulled up alongside my grain bins which were old oil tanks burned out with a door cut in them, I just sat on one side rail of the bed at the back end with a smaller scoop schovel and casually scooped as much as I could of around near all of 1/2 of the bed. Then I turned the pk around and did the same with the other side. Then I stood normally to clean out the rest.
Where are you purchasing bulk grains - Fifth Season?
We haven't had to purchase them yet. But we are hoping to get them much closer to our house than Fifth Season. Also, we are hoping to go in with some of our neighbors and buy larger quantities to reduce cost. We are also looking at sprouting barley, kind of like wheat grass, to feed the chickens and the goats.
Hey Uncle Art, If you leave out the wheat , the eggs will be gluten free.. also if you buy oat bran in bulk.. you can save all the whole grains you have currently and double the usage time.. by mixing the grains with the oat bran.. saves a ton of money.. and provides between 11 to 14 % protein..
Neat.
Hassan's Hatchery I never thought of this. if you are GF, do you have to have GF feed also? what about dairy free? have to keep dairy away from egg layers. I have 16% layer feed with 7% soybean meal to make 21% or so protein. they love this.
We had a diet specialist recommend "hens eggs" to my gran for her health.. ergo arnt all eggs, hens eggs?? lol also.. if you look at vaccine specifics, recommended half life specifics for eg. salmonella vaccines , require you to throw all eggs away for a month if im not mistaken?? thus.. im pretty sure.. the GF eggs are GF, as well as organic and Non-Gmo, its what we striving for.. :)
Is this bulk feed purchased in the Asheville area? I live in Greeneville Tn and I am looking to buy bulk and mix my feed. I can't find anywhere local that has organic or non gmo of these items. Driving to Asheville would be cheaper than paying shipping from online purchase. Any info would be appreciated! Love your videos and what you and your family are doing!!!
What can I substitute for the corn. Too hot for arizona
Nice
Where do you get the grains?
I know this is an old video, but could you tell me where you can purchase these grains in bulk? I'm having the hardest time getting ahold of any.
What is the protein ratio on this?
What about in the warm months, do you still add corn? And, where do you get your fish meal - is it specific to poultry/animal consumption? Any good sources for the kelp? Thanks!
Does fish meal have mercury in it?
Please where did you order all your grains from
Where do you get peas and fish meal from?
it's hard to find all of these ingredients in 50# bag in my area, middle GA do you have names of mills that I could contact?
HAPPY HEARTS 💕
You're the best Utopar ... Your brother from Iraq
Okay here Art, thanks for asking :P That was a little scary, but we're laughing! Never a dull moment tagging along on the A&B homestead.
Where do you find all the grains and nutrients.. I found some online, but I fear the shipping would be horrendous!
Justin gave us all these. Not sure where he bought it. We will be talking to feed stores in a few months when it is time to order more and pricing all the products that they can get from their suppliers.
1994abbygirl if you look on the bag at 5:01 you can see a new country organics logo
1994abbygirl i
Can you buy all of these ingredients at a feed store ? Should I be looking on line ? Help lol ?
hmmmmmmmmmmmm I don't know whose scales were off. The ones where you bought feed or where I bought feed. A barrel of shelled corn, I remember cause I bought it several times in the barrel before going bulk was #300
If you had gone off the cliff and used someone else's recipe, can you imagine the comments section!! I'd be leading the charge. We know they are you chickens but we kinda own them as well!! They are the most loved chicken flock on the internet. You're channel and Justin's channel have the same vibe. And I love them both!!
I didn't even consider it.
Would you guys make a video on how you make your time lapses? They turn out so beautifully and we would love to learn those skills.
I would love to do a video on it. I don't really see it happening soon though so I will tell you how we do it right here. Our camera has a time lapse setting. You can pick the interval in seconds between shots and the number of shots you want to take. So you can pick how long it will take to shoot and how long it will take to play when done. Compose your scene, big slow movements are good, using a tripod and shoot. It is really that simple. They do turn out great don't they. They show you something right in front of you that is invisible unless you speed it up.
Indeed! Thanks so much for sharing the info. We just ordered a new camera that comes with the time-lapse setting. We'll make sure to credit you for the inspiration to speed to time to appreciate the miracles of nature. Blessings to you and your family.
Wondering where you order your whole grains from (or where Justin did...love his channel too)? Looking for a good organic non-gmo source! Love your vids!
Nature's Cadence Farm US too, can't seem to find a supplier that will ship less than a truckload
Not inexpensive and I have not tried but I found this. www.scratchandpeck.com/product-category/organic-grains/
Justin did a video on this, its was actually quite hard as most suppliers dont want to deal with such small orders. So he shopped around to larger farms who were using same ingredients and asked them to add in a few bags when they ordered for him. But he had to put effort into finding each of those ingredients and not all at same place.
Do you let the goats out to graze on grass
Skip to 4:06
Thank you! Now I might make some money selling eggs
How much do you give them per day?
❤
Go to 4:40 to get the recipe.
Hi...... 🎥👍👍👍
What about the calcium?
Problem is, where do you get the whole grains?
We feed our girls pellets and often lobster shells...they will peck at them too...
bonnie berry it is normal
I love these videos.
From sad experience, I want to share this thought with you. If at all possible, put all that unmixed feed into metal cans - trash cans work great. They keep out rodents and moisture, two enemies of feed. Mice and rats can chew through plastic bins (that's where the sad experience comes in). I can usually get two 50-lb bags in one 33-gal trash can.
BTW - Justin didn't add in the fish meal until he was ready to take it out to the flock.
Yes, they are in 50 gallon metal drums. And I believe he covered the fish meal and nutribalancer at the end of the video.
How much Nutra Balancer?
I got the 1 part oats and the 1 part fish meal, but I didn't catch how much Nutra Balancer.
Thank you
We're do you buy a bag of peas like that?!?!?
Are those GMO-free grains? I think if you mill the mix it exposes more nutrients for the animals..... Funny this video came up today. I've been researching sources for GMO-free chick starter.
So interesting 👍🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓
Where can I buy all the feed to mix my own? Thanks for sharing with us! Toodles🌞
You could try your local feed store. See if they will order it for you.
ART and BRI what kind of pea are you using?
Is Kai a cream legbar chicken
