  • First off, sorry for the blinding lighting in this….one day I'll get my ish together, promise.
I'm so happy many of you are reaching out to me about veterinary school and grad school in general! I hope that you guys find this helpful and please comment below with any and all questions!
What I talk about is not limited to vet school - it definitely applies to all grad programs like medical school, dental school, and non-science grad schools as well!
The video itself is so damn long and I def don't want you guys to be forced to watch the whole thing so I tried to organize the video based on times and what I talked about at each point. Click on the timings below and it should take you to that part. Also, I did a super quick summary at the end if you just want to watch that!
0:58 - Disclaimer -- please understand this is simply my experience. It is NOT a template to follow blindly nor is it assurance of getting into any such program. It should just help you plan ahead & figure things out!
1:16 - da beginning: Basically my childhood and how I figured out the difference between my ‘love’ for animals and my wanting to help animals
1:56 - I began volunteering at an animal shelter/rescue agency when I was 10 years old.
3:20 - I began working at animal hospitals (private practice clinics) in high school
3:56 - Animal experience is important early on - it helps you figure out what you want to do. It helped me realize I wasn’t a huge fan of private clinical practice; I didn't see myself doing that as a job, day in and day out.
6:00 - MOST important job as a high school student = get good grades! Why? I believe it builds a very healthy habit and is a good base for success
6:55 - Also, highschool grades are very important for college and scholarships!!! I personally believe, if you're planning on grad school, you shouldn’t dish out money for undergrad. As long as you're not sacrificing the quality of your education, save money!
7:50 - My college scholarship, how I got it and how it helped me; highschool grades and SAT score
9:30 - Tufts AVM Summer program (Veterinary Camp)
10:09- Most important job as a college student = GET GOOD GRADES! Vet school is so competitive which is why grades are so key.
11:48 - If you’re thinking about vet school, start figuring out all your prerequisites. Do some homework on what certain vet med schools require.
12:47 - Plan ahead! My experience in college - finishing my prereqs early gave me a lot of time for fun. Point of the story? Get good grades! Get money!
13:33 - Research, work experiences and recommendation letters!!! I forgot to mention this, but I also did a few weeks of work with cows and lab animals during college.
15:30 - lol I hate research. Do it anyway.
16:08 - Have fun! PARTY! Balance your life! Learn to work hard and play hard.
Have hobbies - good for applications and good for mental health
18:03 - GREs. My GRE score and college GPA
19:20 - The veterinary medical school application process. Which veterinary schools I applied to. My reasonings for the schools I picked. How to choose a grad school that is right for you.
23:35 - Put a lot of effort into your personal statement!
25:16 - Quick summary for middle school, high school, college and veterinary, medical and other grad school applicants.
That's basically it. Obviously a lot has been going since vet school started for me (I am currently in my second semester of 2nd year) and based on the response I get from this, I will definitely make a Part II.
If you watch this video and are uber stressed, don't be!!! Keep in mind that this is was my dream from day one! Also I came from a family and culture that put a lot of importance on grades and education so I was almost forced (in a good way) to get good grades which made the process a bit easier for me. If you're concerned about grades, don't be deterred. Know that IMPROVEMENT means a lot to these schools and combined with evidence of passion and effort, there are infinite ways to stand out as a candidate.
If you still aren't sure about what you even want to do...THAT'S OKAY TOO! There are tons of vet students who took a different path or didn’t know that this is what they wanted to do. If you are late to the game and still want to go to any type of graduate school, you can! You just have to prove your diligence and dedication! If you majored in something else or applied to another field or had a different job, you can always still apply to vet school and get in as long you have the right passion for it and the proper means of succeeding aka hard work!
Thank you for your interest! If you have any questions, ask away!

I know =[ I remember it being tough when I started out but I was at least able to get a few opportunities. Nowadays no one accepts volunteers or students to shadow. My advice is to be persistent and keep asking. If they don't have to pay you, they may eventually say yes

Are you in the US? The entrance exam for college is the SAT and there are soooooo many books/texts you can use to prepare. There are even classes you can take! The best way to study is to do practice questions again and again and take practice exams. This holds true for any standardized test - GRE, MCAT, boards, etc

OMG I've always thought I was the only one obsessed with animal cops!! I LOVED that show and watched it constantly starting when I was like 10!! The SPCA in my city was on the show and it inspired me to start going to the summer vet camp there from a very young age. Everyone thought I was weird for watching it because it can be pretty upsetting and graphic but for me it was more about seeing action being taken against animal abuse and the difference in the quality of animals lives after getting help. That show may be one of the reasons I'm about to start school to be a vet- something I've been planning on since I was in elementary school!!

I did not get into my in-state school, but I was accepted to two others so I will be moving in the next few months!!! I would love to message you about how you can afford vet school as an OOS student, as I will be doing the same. I also received a scholarship to my undergrad institution so my bachelor's degree was covered by that, which is why I chose to attend. I really wanted to save as much money as possible before vet school. Congratulations on getting in and I hope you are doing well!

Hahahah fact of the matter is - i CAN'T afford it lol not many can. I'm taking loans to pay for it and that's a debt I will carry once I graduate. I found a decently priced apartment and am living with a roommate (another vet student). I do work part-time at the vet school itself; it's not much, basically lunch money lol but anything is better than nothing! But don't worry about finances if this is what you want to do!!! Congrats on getting in!! ❤️ You're in for a ride!

It saves them the work, it shows you went out of your way to save them time and you get your personalized letter of recommendation. Sounds selfish but who knows you, better than you!?

Thank you for your insight. I have dreamed of being a vet since I was a kid but unfortunately life has placed me off that path and I'm having difficulty entering more vet related fields because all my prior job history is mortgage/bank related and I am very unhappy in that field. I've been volunteering with animalsto acquire more animal experience but I still haven't been able to get a job at a clinic even as a receptionist or assistant yet. I'm considering getting a certificate for being a vet tech To Help me out more but in the long run, I'd prefer to be a veterinarian and that'd just be a lot of extra money getting a certificate that's not required to become a veterinarian.

    • @niveda108

Haha good question! Sleep in college was probably less than I do now but that's not because of studying - it's because of socializing and partying! In vet school however, my entire day consists of studying with very little social time and in order to be ready to study efficiently the next day I absolutely need minimum 8 hours of sleep so I just plan accordingly to get that amount! Also, I midday napped a lot in college and I barely have the time for that now so I make sure to get 8 hours in at night (exception being nights before tests, etc)

There are still animal related jobs like working at the zoo or conservations, at groomers, at sanctuaries or shelters but in my opinion the biggest way you can make a difference and still fulfill that love for animals is by volunteering and doing right by them! You can make your career something different that, lets say, earns you money or gives you free time so you can either donate to animal-specific causes or spend time volunteering! Volunteering with animal organizations has always made me feel the happiest!

I REALLY want to become a veterinarian when I am older, I am currently 14. In Australia a 4 year course is $250,000 and then plus the undergraduate degree for three years. I have a massive passion for animals, I volunteer at adoption days to handle the dogs and try to get them adopted, I also have a blog where I post general dog health posts and since my dog injured herself badly I had to wrap it up and supervise her. I just feel like my ultimate dream is going to be washed away because of the $250,000 plus all the other fees. And I’ve also read several Australian articles about students have 20 years of debt etc. is there any ways I could start saving up now? Or something I can do?

    • @niveda108
      @niveda108  Před 6 lety +1

Mini & Cosmic Its pretty much the same cost here. I mean I'm facing the 250,000 right now and it hasn't washed away my dreams! I'm taking loans that I will work hard to pay off. So unless you want to earn money in order to live a luxurious lifestyle with a multimillion dollar home, brand name clothing, jewelry and cars, this is totally doable! I don't need all those fancy things (at least not until my loans are paid off!). I aim to pay off my loans in 10 years, absolutely no longer than that, so it means I might have to spend less on myself but at least I'll be working the career I want every day! I hope this helps you! Dont let money deter you from anything! Id rather be poor and happy than rich and unfulfilled

My biggest mistake was being too scared to ask questions and trying to figure things out on my own lol When I first started working in appointments and it was my first time doing things like taking blood or running labwork etc, I used to write down all the steps on a post it and look over it again and again until I just became used to doing it. Repetition is key!

In your experience, will Vet schools consider the rigor of your high school courses when looking at your GPA? For instance, currently I am a Junior in high school and I have 6 AP classes and 2 honors classes at a BASIS school, and I have a 3.3. Obviously, someone taking a basic course load would achieve a much higher GPA much easier. Will Vet schools take this into consideration especially considering I have scored in the 99th percentile on entrance exams?
