    I just graduated with a B.S in Biology, but my overall GPA is definitely way lower than the average GPA to be admitted into vet school. I have decided to take a longer path and apply for the vet tech program in my city at a community college in the spring as a way to take classes that were not offered at my 4-year college, increase my GPA, and get more experience. Most of the prerequisites for the program are ones I have taken already at my 4-year college and most of the grades for those classes that were accepted are luckily mostly B's or better. I also just started working at a vet in my neighborhood as a vet assistant and improving everyday. I'm confident that this path will better prepare me for vet school after I am finished with the vet tech program.

    I’ve always wanted to be a vet ever since I was a little girl. I applied to a agriculture high school in middle school and didn’t make it in. People kept telling me how competitive it was and that vets aren’t real doctors. so I decided nursing. I’m starting school in the spring and trying to make a decision and I’m choosing vet. I have more of a passion for it

But if I was to give advice to anyone who doesn't have this, I would suggest taking as many science classes as you can to prepare for college courses. Depending on where you live, you can start doing some college courses in high school too! Look into AP classes. Or classes at your local community college!

I’m in CC and a freshman and now they are telling me they don’t have Biology just a Liberal Arts in Biology 🤨 is that the same? I know silly question. I don’t want that to hurt my chances of finding a job in the field since it’s a “Liberal Arts”. I know that’s so confusing and I’m rambling. I just want to know what the right path to it is. sorry if it’s confusing. I’m subbing 👍🏼

      The colorful Cactus it won’t hurt your chances as all! Your major will probably be similar to biology but it just won’t have the same course requirements. I would recommend looking up the specific program/school you’re interested in attending and seeing their prereqs. You can major in absolutely anything you want as long as you make sure to get those out the way, so don’t you worry!

    This is great information and is really helping me guide my application process for when it's finally time!
    I did all my volunteer work and veterinary work (around 1,700 hours) in high school. I know the importance of maximizing these experiences, but my undergrad schedule isn't really favorable to most veterinary clinics, although I am trying to find work again at a clinic. Do you think it matters when I had my experiences?

    • @natassjiar8590
      @natassjiar8590  Před 5 lety +1

      DawsonGroves nooo not at all! Experience is experience, and you have quite a bit which is great! I know it can be difficult managing a job around school, and they understand that, but if you can manage to work some volunteering in that’d be the best you can do. It doesn’t have to be at a clinic and it doesn’t have to be anything too crazy, but if you could find somewhere to help out a couple times a month that’ll strengthen up your application. If you’re not taking classes over the summer then maybe you could try to work the clinical experience in then :)

I’m applying this cycle (May 2019) and I feel that my application is strong and I’m well-rounded, but I’m super worried about my gpa. If you don’t mind me asking, what was yours when you applied? Any advice you can offer on gpa besides “the higher the better” (did you know anyone with a lower gpa who got in?)

    • @natassjiar8590
      @natassjiar8590  Před 5 lety

      Justine Swaress hey girly, I’m so glad this was helpful for you! My gpa was a 3.3, but I’m not exactly sure of what kind of gpas other people have. If you’re worried, try to work hard to do very well on the GRE. I think that, along with my experiences, was what helped me to get interviews. Also, some schools have much lower gpa requirements than others, so if your goal is to just get in to vet school, and you don’t have a preference in where you go, then I’d look to apply to those as well!

    • @natassjiar8590
      @natassjiar8590  Před 5 lety +2

      Jane Smith hey girly! So it depends on your states regulations, in Florida you do not have to be licensed to work as a technician. So I was able to draw blood, place catheters, give vaccines, moniter for surgery, read cytologies etc etc. basically anything a licensed tech was able to do! If your state/clinic requires certification, then as an assistant you would probably still be able to read cytologies and medicate patients, but you probably wouldn’t be prepping/assisting with surgeries, doing bloodwork, taking radiographs. It’d most likely be just helping out the technicians. Either way you’d still be exposed to and get to learn a lot, so I think it’s worth it!
