When I moved to a new city and my next door neighbor cranked up this album, I knew I'd come to the right place.

Interesting if true

I saw Sonic Youth At First Avenue. Main room was packed and I was wearing a Sonic Youth t-shirt that had "Kim Gordon's love slave" printed on the back. I was in the pit, and she saw the shirt and pointed at me! A wild, drunken blur of a show. Loved every minute of it.
Saw the in Thailand in 1996 with Beastie Boys and Foo Fighters, and Thurston thrashed his guitar - surreal
Lucky you! Did you ever get the shirt signed?
I saw Sonic Youth play at the venue in Melbourne that has the stars painted on the ceiling they are an awesome driving force
I used to be a regular at First Ave for about ten years. I saw a lot of great concerts there. I think I missed this one though. Violent Femmes; and the Suburbs very final show at the tops of the list.
Wouldn't we all wanna be Kim Gordon's love slave?
She just turned 70 two days ago. Happy birthday Kim!! 🎉❤

Public enemy + sonic youth = awesome ! 💥💣
I always considered Public Enemy Alternative Hip Hop. Chuck D. reminds me of Joe Strummer and Flavor Flav Johnny Rotten. It’s about they’re words and energy.
I first heard this song when I woke up at 4 am at a party in summer 1990. MTV was on (they used to play videos), and this video came on. I was the only person awake at the time. I remember thinking, "OMG, this is the coolest song I've ever heard."
Kim's got such an awesome voice. That monologue in the middle of the song is 10/10.
Wouldn't be surprised if Shirley Manson considered her to be an influence on her style
It's a dialogue.
Happy 69th Birthday Kim Althea Gordon April 28, 1953 Rochester, New York
In '77 she was in CKM and then met Thurston. The two eventually formed Sonic Youth and the rest is history.. Cheers Kim..
Chuck D came in the studio when Sonic Youth was recording the song and freestyled it.
?? Pwwwwwah whatever!
I remembered when this video premiered on MTV.
Blew my tiny, teenaged mind!
You're lucky. Mtv just shows hipster shit nowadays.
nah, mtv is worse than that. if you want to find recent rock music on mtv you have to wade through a sea of My Chemical Romance, new age pop metal garbage, a load of green day and nirvana re runs (which im not saying are bad, just repeated), new releases for every single single from You Me at Six, Paramore and Linkin Park. Then you get to the 100 best 2000s songs section where they just roll over the same foo fighters, muse, good charlotte and blink 182 their licensed to. they spend so much time on sorting out this stuff when they could just as easily dedicate a show to the countless cool new bands out there that would really have a boost if they were aired on MTV. Its such a stupid system.
My dad told me MTV was good. But now it's shit.
They even made Daria.
The fuck happened MTV ?

It was the last great decade , as decades ever since don't even feel like decades as it's just another year . It's as if the past 22 years have nothing to relate to .
Back from my youth, when it was sonic.
Saw Sonic Youth in concert early 1990s. They opened with this song. That concert f-ing rocked. Excellent band live.
I love Sonic Youth, they're really underrated in my opinion, not enough people know of their music.

yesss i just turned 18 and got into sonic youth a few years back and i wish i was there to live in the 90s lol- just missed it
Just remember to look through the trash and make stuff because you can. Turn off the devices and force yourself to seek something in wasteland around you. You can do what we all did. We just had hitchhike, take 3 day Greyhound bus rides, talk to people also hanging out of the sidewalk, and sleep in abandoned buildings. (Do that in a group - It's actually pretty miserable unless it's London in the day, in NYC you always had crack dealers and cops making dangerous and setting your home on fire.) We had to do stuff. Just don't be a spectator. You can be the coolest person in 2022 if you just don't try to be online. Get some chalk and draw on stuff outside or something. Fill a parking meter with quarters and haul an old couch there and throw a party. Take back reality. Just don't make it virtual.
They have always been insanely popular - just not mainstream pop popular.
Nah fuck sonic youth
Being on Guitar Hero really helped introduce this band to many people who otherwise would have never listened to them. I love the message this song sends in a way but I also think going to far the other way like having "a female planet" is not ideal either. I try to just enjoy the music and not worry about the political message to much.
Super catchy riff, can’t get it out of my head
Real
Kim is just too cool
+Roxanna RZ ... yes, but i think the term is "kool" :)
+Roxanna RZ She's a bit like PJ Harvey. A reckless, bad tempered, rough princess of the desert.
You guys should read her memoir. It's awesome. She's got really interesting stories about things that influenced her even outside of Sonic Youth, growing up in California etc.
Word up kool thing. Nahhhhhhhh........
Yeah the stuff about her brother was heart warming and frightening. What really stuck with me though was that she saw sonic youth's music as an extension of art rather than as a band, her whole perspective was very interesting.
Jesus, still sounds thrilling after all these years
Maybe because the stuff she's talking about in the song has not changed to a significant degree.
Even now! 5 years after your comment. So good..

Thrilling and ILLICIT. An "Am I going toget arrested just for playing this album?" kind of vibe.
This is quite possibly the coolest actual thing that's ever been posted on these tubes. That irony just makes it cooler.
"these tubes", damn you're ooooold.
@@ChristopherGray00,your point would be? Who cares if someone is "old"? If your lucky you will be too one day. A lot of Sonic Youth fans are "ooooooooold" because Sonic Youth is"ooooooold". I'm sure they were a bit more organised in the studio but I've seen them do this live with screwdrivers jammed into the neck of their guitars and no apparent attempt to play anything meaningful - and it still sounded amazing.
+David McManus if you casually read through sonic youth's wikipedia page, you'll learn that sonic youth specifically experimented with using screwdrivers and drumsticks stuck to the necks of their guitars to create very unique tuning. they then had to play with the guitars that already had screwdrivers jammed into the neck of the guitar, because the tuning for certain songs was so specific that it would take far too long for them to tune one guitar on stage in between songs. so actually much more organised (and creative) than you'd think! :)
and their equipment van got stolen so they can't play some of their songs live anymore... my childhood dream was to watch them do The Diamond Sea live...
Cassandra those ideas come from John Cage with the prepared piano. They took that concept to another level.

@@alternative-drummer Nope. I am 50. I lived through the alternative revolution of the late 80's and early 90's
Just because they transformed the landscape of music does not translate to them getting the credit they are due.
In my part of the planet, SY was not talked about much at all.
Daydream Nation never charted in the United States. Goo peaked at #96 in the USA. Dirty peaked at #83 in the USA.

Sonic youth was a product of the 80's ! You just had to look underground to find awesome bands like this!
All the best '90s bands were products of the '80s underground.
I swear the guitar in the beginning is SINGING I don't wanna or am I just that stoned ?
Dude
Holy fuck
Amarantharayne It's a vocal track singing along with the guitar that has been faded down but is either slightly there or the vocals bled over to another microphone. Really weird result though.
Amarantharayne Yes. It's a C note followed by and A note that makes the "i don't wanna part" that you're hearing on guitar.
Darrien Day Right, plus the actual singing part that they are asking about.
I met them and got an autograph at a local record store when they were touring and promoting this album. I remember they looked pretty rough from the night before...
I love that part of the song 2:36 - 3:08
Really? I love it from head to toe

Drain you plágio
and the part which comes before it sounds like old Placebo
now I know where they got those distorted sounds from
It was 1995 and they opened for Oasis at a place called the Armory in Indianapolis. They were great. Oasis left the show early due to the "disrespect" they had received from the audience. My friends and I were disappointed after the show was cut short and hung out outside. Kim and the drummer approached a friend and I and we began to talk about music right there in the streets for quite a while. She then invited us to drink with them and bs at a bar nearby but I had to decline being I was only 18. They were exceedingly down to earth, honest, kind and fiercely intelligent. I wish I was 21 back than but I will always treasure that brief interaction with those two. As musicians and as people they were AWESOME.

It's the summer of 1990...I'm revising for my first year rural land management exams at Harper Adams Agricultural College..
John Peel has Sonic Youth in session...it was an immense piece of music when I heard it a third of a century ago...and it's immensity has not been dulled by time
"Fear of a Female Planet. Fear, baby." Nice! This was such a smart group that in 1990 they had the vision and street cred to get Chuck D. of Public Enemy to guest on this song and change up his own words ("Fear of a Black Planet") to meet Kim's feminist vision. Again, nice!
The "I don't think so" is borrowed from LL Cool J's "Going back to Cali". Kim made an interview with the rapper for a magazine. There he stated that a man should have control over his woman. Kim was understandably shell shocked. This little affair inspired her to write the song.
@@ianfindly3257 I think she's not really talking about other cultures though. "male white corporate oppression" is a cliche line anyway and I don't think it's used in a completely serious way.
@@ianfindly3257 lmao go off white male
@@grubfoot5707 Please, look up evergreen college scandal and tell me it's not completely serious. This identituy politic stuff is VERY dangerous!
@@ianfindly3257 I think you took the line "male white corporate oppression" more seriously than it's originally intended. This whole song is a satirical jab at LL Cool J, but there's also quite a bit of jabbing at herself. Kim is self-mocking her own feminist ideals with certain lines, that being one. And while I agree with some of your statement, this song isn't really the vehicle for that cross-cultural education.

One of the greatest music videos ever made.
I love the message of this song
What they do is they take the strings of the guitar and re-arrange them in a certain way. They then experiment with the toning (hence, why they are known as a an alternative experimental band) and they improvise from there (they are known for being an improvising band, they created daydream nation in one jam session or something like that, if I remember correctly) A very good band!
You mean they use alternate tunings on the guitar. Look up Glenn Branca, that's where they got their start.
