Less than a month now till Ron and I marry . Next week's video will be all about the wedding dress, which was modeled after this gown dated 1780 - 1785 chertseymuseum.org/search_collection?filter=jane%20bailey&item=19606
Do you all have any marriage advice? Please, let me know in the comments.
And now! Back to these delicious apple fritters. At the end of the video you will find an image of the original recipe (or receipt as they used to be called) and modern instructions below. Thank you for watching.
*Apple Fritters (Modern Domestic Cookery, 1829. Published in New York)
5 medium sized apples, peeled & cored
    Half a pint of ale
    2 eggs, whisked
    0.5 cups of flour
3 heaping tablespoons of sugar + more for sprinkling
Half a teaspoon of nutmeg OR 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
    Lard, for frying
After peeling and coring your apples slice them into disks/rounds. Prepare a batter by combining eggs, ale, sugar, nutmeg and flour until you've formed a thick batter. Coat the apple rounds in the batter by fully submerging them with a fork or your fingers. Carefully drop them into a skillet of hot lard set to medium heat. These cook quickly! Flip once one side is golden, which should take between 1-3 minutes. When both sides are golden remove from the oil and set aside. Sprinkle the top with more sugar. Use the sugar of your choice but powdered sugar would be an excellent choice for this. Enjoy!

I will have been married to the same man 39 years this Sunday. My best marriage advice is this: No matter how hard you may fight sometimes and no matter what for, when the fight has ended, let it go and remind yourselves why you got married in the first place. Best wishes to you both for a long and happy marriage.

Before I got married, I kept hearing people say, "Oh the honeymoon phase will end". I call that crap. It only ends if you let it. My grandparents & my husbands grandparents were married 70 yrs. before they passed away. My grandparents are gone, & my husband's grandma is gone, but they loved each other so much & still did silly & funny special things with each other. My advice is to keep investing in your marriage. Keep making each other laugh, & say I love you every night even when you dont feel like it, & remember you are each other's best friend & want the best for each other. When you go grocery shopping & he goes alone, he may not get the exact thing you need, but if he gets something close then you know he was trying & he was listening. Cherish every moment. ❤

My best marriage advice, there can only be 1 CFO. My wife and I almost didn't make it to our first anniversary because we were always fighting over money. Finally, I just turned the the checkbook over to her, only giving my advice when asked, and only spending what and when she said we could afford it. We are coming up on 49 years, 4 kids and 6 grandkids. And she is still our family's Chief Financial Officer!

A lot of old timers in my life who had long marriages would always say “don’t ever go to bed angry at each other”. I’ve only been married a year so the best advice I can give would be for the day. Advocating for yourself and what makes you and hubby happy on the big day should be top priority! No matter what that may look like to others. And just go with the flow. Even if it doesn’t go to plan, it makes for great stories to tell the kids and grandkids. Happy for you two!

Add that to the 101 uses for the bayonet. Often, I've seen our reenactors using them for hot dogs or sausages lol. The marriage advice: One, don't go to bed angry. Two, never name call each other during an argument, that kind of battle is over and it defeats the purpose you two wanted to express. Three, it is OK to agree to disagree with the issues you both are passionate about. That is why we are different in some ways and similar in a lot of ways lol. Four, give yourself some space, a time to yourself. If a man says there is nothing wrong with a very broody expression, let him sort himself out. When he is ready, he will tell you. Or he realized he was upset about nothing, wasted energy on something unrealistic. Five, tell your spouse at the end of the day, I love you! Six, practice listening. If you don't understand ask him to rephrase it again so you can understand him. We just don't have the same mental dialog all the time. Seven, be patient and be understanding but not to the point you neglect yourself. Eight, don't EVER try to change your spouse's lifestyle to fulfill YOUR expectations. You married him for what he is, for good for worse but know when it harmful for you and your marriage. Nine, when a spouse give you the hard NO!, she or he means it but won't hurt to ask again later, just to see if they changed their minds later on. Better stop for now lol.

These fritters look absolutely amazing! 😃 And one bit of wedding advice I have (incidentally coming from someone who isn't married) is to never stop going on dates even after you're married. I have an uncle that has had dates nights with his wife once a week for YEARS, and he's told me that it's really deepened and strengthened their marriage. Never stop going on adventures together, never stop surprising each other, and never stop making new memories! 😊

My husband and I have been married for 18 years, and we abide by 2 unbreakable "rules":
    1. When you get mad, which you will because you are human, resist saying anything to hurt the other (even if it means locking yourself in the bathroom for awhile)
    2. Always remind yourself that you are different people with different ideas of doing things. That's okay and neither of you will change in all likelihood. Let those little things go.

15 years married. Here’s my advice. I know the old adage is “don’t go to bed angry” but I have found that saying “I love you and we’ll talk about it in the morning” is much more productive. Fatigue on the evening is a sure way to put gasoline on a fire and sleep tends to help you clear out a lot of the issues that probably wouldn’t normally be there.
The other piece of advice. Communicate. Over communicate if you have to. And remember most of communication is listening and remembering what they’ve said. God’s blessings on your upcoming marriage!

My husband and I will celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary on May 23rd. My best advise is to be open and honest about everything. You are each others best friends, cheerleaders and confidants. You should be able to depend on each other for anything and everything. Honesty, integrity and trust in your marriage is so important. Also, don’t forget why you fell in love in the first place and go on a weekly date! Even if it’s just a nice walk or a movie night at home where you snuggle on the sofa and share some popcorn! I still leave love notes for my husband in his car, or I sneak them in his jacket pocket. When he leaves to go hunting I sneak little snacks in his backpack. It’s the little things that you do for each other that keeps that flame of love burning.

The best advice we got when we were newly married was to take time to prioritize our relationship. Kids , day to day life, bad times can all put pressure on a couple and it’s important to make your realationship a priority so that when all is said and done, kids are grown , retirement, and so on you still like each other and enjoy being together. My husband and I have raised three kids. Had money issues and life issues and family trouble but through it all he still makes me laugh and I’ve never been happier in our 36 years together.

My husband had a different idea of what a "clean house" looked like than I do. He's great and will help with housework when asked, but doesn't always notice it. It used to upset me he didn't notice... now (after having our son!) I don't "notice" as much as I used to either. 😄

lol, I loved it when I read “Ron’s bayonet was unguarded .” Too funny. Another great recipe, thank you for showing this. I’m always amazed at how they did things, I wouldn’t have had a clue before I started watching your channel. 43 years with the same man last month, never give up on your marriage, in tough times make sure to communicate, we only think we know what they are thinking. Good boss you both. Oh, where can I find your mailing address?

The bayonnet usage was priceless! Apart from the Maple sugar, that‘s how my mother (and now I) make them here in Germany!

Justine, what an ingenious apple corer! (I used my hubby's guitar slide once) LOL!
I order maple sugar cakes from Quebec and then use a Microplane to grate it.
I love the fritters! They aren't even deep-fried - so awesome!
Can you talk about your scarf and apron on Chew and Chat? Your new outfits are fabulous!
