  • There's nothing like growing plants from seed to truly notice the horrific quick passage of time. I felt like I started growing cactus from seed yesterday but here I am giving you all an update on my 3 year old Saguaro seedlings.... existential crisis kicked into full gear.

    I planted about 15 seeds last month, I kinda gave up on them and put them out side in our English summer sun, just noticed today that 3 of them have made it to seedings… I cannot believe it! Hopefully they Will survive.. it’s been a dream of mine to look after a saguaro. They always looked so exotic in the old US westerns and cartoons to a lad from County Durham. Yours look amazing and the one in the front yard !

    Nice Saguaros!! They will take more water than nature gives them, that's for sure. Just pay attention to their ribs, once they're fully expanded, they're good for while.

    Love the update. I have been growing 2 Saguaro cactus in pots for the last 4 years. This spring I planted a bunch of seeds, they are doing good on my patio so far, no mold or fungus yet.

      I am in Livermore,CA. Climate zone is 9b. In the 5 years I have never moved the Saguaros inside of covered in winter or summer. They started the size of a plum and they are now like a small watermelon.

    They are still pretty large for their age. They grow even slower in nature. Very nice saguaros. They look super healthy.

      They're sooo slowwww in nature. It's an absolute miracle that any can even survive and turn into mature plants in habitat. An absolute miracle!

    Congratulations. I think they're wonderful. Strange to think our plants may outlive us. Now I'm worried about who will look after mine when I'm gone. There's an endless variety of cactus trauma. Who knew?

      It is the strangest thing to think that some of these plants may outlive us. Sometimes I wonder which of my plants will still be with me until the end. Then I start to freak out from the thought and try to stop thinking about it lol 😅

    thank you for your videos! ive recently just got into succulents and cactus and your videos have all been so helpful! I just had my first little mexican giant cactus seedling sprout. A saguaro cactus with arms is one of my dream cacti so watching this video gives me hope of growing them from seeds too :D

    At 3 inches tall, I would say if you put a good sized rock on the evening side, blocking the evening, Sun, you can plant them in the yard right now. They would probably take a little water every evening after the sun goes down if your yard drains well.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  Před 12 dny

      I wish I had the space! I was joking with my mom that I can plant all 20 seedlings into my front yard, that would be so funny (because I have a tiny front yard lol).

    I have grown them from 1 foot tall to 15 foot tall in 15 years in the backyard before. So they will start growing about 1 foot per year with evening shade, and a little extra water in the summer during the heat

    Did you cross polinate the Mammillarias or they self pollinate? Or some insect pollinate them?

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  Před 17 dny

      I think some mammillaria are self fertile and others are not, but I don't know which are which. For the Mammillaria I grew from seeds off my own plant, the seed pods just showed up on their own, most likely done by insects. I did not explicitly pollinate for this batch.

      Wow, 10 year old Saguaro seedlings! Incredible growing! What part of the world/country are you at? I gave my brother one of my seedlings when it was a one year old. He lives in Portland, Oregon and the seedling has basically stayed the same size since then.

    How often do you water? Any fertilizer?

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  Před 14 dny

      Which season and how old? At 3 years old I'm watering them every other week during the summer. Winter I let the rains take care of them. Spring and fall is always tricky, probably once every 3-4 weeks when the fall comes this time. When they were younger I watered more often. I do not fertilize regularly. I might have given them one watering with fert diluted down 10x this season.
