Hi guys! Thanks for watching! Yeah we really loved Ohrid! The Lake and area are beautiful. We would definitely recommend it! However we didn't explore much else of teh country. We just took a few days to visit this area for the history/churches etc and the LAKE! If you explore more be sure to let us know so we can check it out!
St Naum was a Macedonian writer and not Bulgarian.
Hi there. Well all of the sources that I've checked state so. The Monastery of Saint Naum is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in North Macedonia, named after the medieval Bulgarian writer and enlightener Saint Naum who founded it.
@@JennandLeon The term "Bulgarian" up until the creation of the Bulgarian state, (the country bordering Macedonia) in 1878, was a politonym, not an ethnonym, hence it was common to call the many Slavonic-speaking populations "Bulgarian" but this was not a personal identity. Many different peoples and identities were under the Bulgarian Empire - the same groups pf peoples who were later under the Ottoman Empire. Just like many different peoples were under the Roman Empire - even as far as Asia Minor - but this did not make everyone under the Roman Empire Italian.
The term "Bulgarian" (just like the term "Greek") has been abused since the rise of nationalism in the past two centuries, to imply that everything and everyone was "Bulgarian' but that was not and is not the case. The term was applied indiscriminately to all populations.
Handy tip - when reading anything about the Balkans, (actually, most of the world to some degree) take it with a grain of salt - even in supposedly reputable publications. History is written by the victor and the victors have their own agendas. Only the individual can decide his/her ethnic identity. The powers that be in the Balkan countries have a history of imposing an identity on their subjects, often by force and this has been the cause of enormous suffering and bloodshed over the centuries.
The Slavonic language was spoken in Macedonia well before the Bulgar invaders arrived in the region. St Naum was simply a subject of the Bulgarian Empire and spoke his native Slavonic language which the invading Turkic-speaking Bulgars adopted after conquering the land (for a total of 124 years in two stages out of a cycle of 12 centuries). These Slavonic-speaking populations were later dubbed "Bulgarian" - a far cry from reality, for what were they before the word "Bulgarian" was even known in the region?

@V.M.R.O1893 We spent a week in Ohrid and talked with so many local people. We understand it’s a touchy issue and we are doing our best to be sensitive to that but we simply call the country by its official name. There is no need for threatening talk like that!
